- 4 x bacon slices minced
- 1 x onion minced
- 2 x celery stalks minced
- 3 x garlic cloves chopped
- 1 x bay leaf
- 1/2 tsp dry thyme crumbled
- 2 can stewed tomatoes (14- to 16-oz)
- 1 bot clam juice (8-oz)
- 1 x tomato sauce (8-oz)
- 1 lrg russet potato peeled, diced
- 1 can diced green chilies (4-oz)
- 2 can minced clams (6 1/2-oz)

- Fry bacon in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat till just beginning to brown, about 7 min. Add in onion, celery, garlic, bay leaf and thyme and cook till onion is tender, stirring occasionally, about 8 min. Add in stewed tomatoes with their juices, clam juice, tomato sauce,
- potato and chilies. Reduce heat and simmer till potato is very tender, about 40 min. Add in clams with juices and heat through. Season chowder
- to taste with salt and pepper. Ladle into bowls and serve.
- Serves 6.
