  1. TO MAKE PASTRY: Sift flour; mix with salt. Cut in shortening with pastry blender, or possibly two knives till mix is consistency of coarse cornmeal.
  2. Sprinkle with cool water, 1 Tbsp. at a time. Mix till all particles are dampened. Put onto wax paper. Press into ball. Let stand 15 min at room temperature.
  3. Line a 9-inch pie plate with the pastry.
  4. Mix 1/4 c. of shortening, brown sugar and corn syrup. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, till mix comes to a boil. Add in the water and again bring to a boil. Continue to boil for 2 min, then remove from heat.
  5. Stir in 1/2 tsp. vanilla. Set aside to cold.
  6. Start oven at 350 degrees. Sift flour with baking pwdr, salt and sugar.
  7. Put 1/4 c. of shortening in mixed bowl. Sift in dry ingredients. Add in lowfat milk and vanilla. Mix till flour is dampened. Beat 2 min on low speed. Add in egg, beat 1 minute longer. Pour batter into pastry-lined pan, Dribble sauce over cake batter. Bake 50-55 min. Serve hot or possibly cool. Sauce will have made layer between cake and pastry.
