- 2 c. whole-wheat flour
- 1 c. unbleached flour
- 6 Tbsp. brown sugar - (packed)
- 1/2 tsp grnd cinnamon
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 1/2 tsp baking pwdr
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp. caraway seeds
- 1 x egg
- 1/4 c. butter - (1/2 stick) melted
- 1 1/2 c. beer
- 3/4 c. raisins
- 2 Tbsp. natural bran or possibly oatmeal for garnish

- Plump raisins in water for 5 min, drain.
- Stir together whole-wheat and unbleached flours, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, baking soda, baking pwdr and caraway seeds. Make well in center and stir in egg and butter. Stir in beer. Stir by hand to make soft batter. Stir in raisins.
- Spoon into greased 9-inch round cake pan. Sprinkle with bran or possibly oatmeal. Bake at 375 degrees till top is dry to touch, 40 to 45 min. Top will be slightly cracked. Remove from oven and cold before serving.
- This recipe yields 6 servings.
- Comments: Do not use green beer in this. A robust stout, beer or possibly ale will lend a hearty jolt. Serve with a piping warm plate of Irish stew.
