Let’s see… I was born in Germany before the Berlin Wall came down. But I was too young to even really know what that meant. At that time I was way too busy playing with snails in the playground. My mom is Colombian and my biological father is German, so I call myself a Gerlombian. Interesting combination, huh? Actually, I tried combining the two languages and according to my mom it kind of sounded like Chinese. When I was 6 we moved to the United States. I learned English with Hooked on Phonics, Teddy Berlitz (I had a British accent for awhile), and The Wizard of Oz. The Wizard of Oz was my all time favorite and I would watch multiple times in a day. However, the movie to me was called “Because, because”. After 3 weeks I started school in America! My parents decided to enroll me in a Montessori School. I remember bringing crystal animals from Czechoslovakia (when it existed) to play during our free time. Who does that? Anyway, after the years of private and public school education I decided to take a break. I went back to Germany to brush up on my speaking and writing skills, and take advantage of my citizenship! I think it might’ve been a wrong time in my life to do that, but I learned from it nonetheless. When I came back to the states on a visit, I decided to stay and apply to the school I wanted to go to. So I hurriedly compiled a portfolio and application and hoped for the best! I got in!
Currently, I’m a student at VCU majoring in Sculpture + Extended Media. Art isn’t my life, but it drives and shapes every aspect of it; Including food, how I move my body, how I dress, decorate, and live my life. I try to make the most out of things, while finding a balance between that and relaxing. Traveling is something I could do forever. I like to introduce myself to new ideas, cultures, tastes, people, places, materials, and much more. Life is too short to be doing the same thing all the time. Most people’s fear is the unknown. I say, embrace it! I enjoy cooking and baking, but I definitely cook a lot more. I feel that some times I may have to have a huge house to accommodate my many moods. Some times I feel like cooking in the whitest, sleekest kitchen then other times I want to sweat over an iron stove.
