I love to eat and love to cook, especially for my family and friends. Our household is trying to get back to basics and reduce our use of processed and pre-prepared foods. I bake most of our breads, rolls, etc., as well as cookies, pies and cakes. We can or freeze produce, meats and meal starters for ourselves, and dog food for my grandson's dog. This year we are planning to do some gardening so that we can grow some of our own produce.

My Mother was an excellent plain cook, so I learned from childhood to appreciate the basic flavors of foods. I feel that this has stood me in good stead as I experimented with various styles of cooking. I still look to retain the original flavors, enhancing them with seasonings rather than masking them.
I have had friends of many nationalities who have been kind enough to introduce me to their native cuisines and encouraged me to try them out on my own.
Having a strong interest in the sciences, I have become a great follower of Alton Brown's "Good Eats" shows and books. His explanations of the science behind various cooking techniques has enabled me to feel that I actually know what I am doing in the kitchen, rather than just how to do it.
