Methi leaves brings nostalgic memories of Coorg (Kodagu) otherwise known as the Scotland of India. Having lived in Mercara (Madikeri) for 7 years gave me Coorgi friends and an opportunity to explore their cuisine….which is very versatile. I have been thinking for a while to share some Coorgi dishes, so I thought why not post it under a new label “Coorg”, so that my blogger friends can also get the taste of Coorg. %20otherwise%20known%20as%20the%20Scotland%20of%20India.%20Having%20lived%20in%20Mercara%20(Madikeri)%20for%207%20years%20gave%20me%20Coorgi%20friends%20and%20an%20opportunity%20to%20explore%20their%20cuisine%E2%80%A6.which%20is%20very%20versatile.%20I%20have%20been%20thinking%20for%20a%20while%20to%20share%20some%20Coorgi%20dishes,%20so%20I%20thought%20why%20not%20post%20it%20under%20a%20new%20label%20%E2%80%9CCoorg%E2%80%9D,%20so%20that%20my%20blogger%20friends%20can%20also%20get%20the%20taste%20of%20Coorg.%20Coorgs%20has%20a%20different%20and%20unique%20style%20of%20preparing%20food%20be%20it%20pork%20fry%20(pandi%20fry),%20akki%20roti%20(rice%20roti),%20Kadumpottu,%20noolputtu,%20papputtu%E2%80%A6.and%20so%20on.%20Rice%20is%20the%20staple%20food.%20So%20mornings%20are%20always%20started%20with%20Akki%20roti,%20which%20is%20made%20of%20cooked%20rice%20and%20rice%20powder%E2%80%A6.Coorgs%20love%20pork%20and%20their%20pork%20curry%20or%20fry%20is%20very%20different%E2%80%A6the%20masala%20for%20the%20pork%20is%20the%20main%20tastemaker%20followed%20by%20the%20kacham%20puli%20(which%20is%20the%20puli%20they%20use%20for%20their%20curries)%E2%80%A6So%20I%20hope%20to%20take%20u%20all%20on%20a%20tour%20to%20Coorg%20and%20give%20you%20a%20taste%20of%20that%20beautiful%20hill%20station.%E2%80%A6..so%20watch%20out%20for%20my%20future%20posts%20on%20Coorg.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERaja%20seat,%20Madikeri.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20coffee%20estate,%20Coorg.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECoorg%20with%20its%20beautiful%20coffee%20plantations....%20fragrance%20of%20coffee%20blossoms,%20the%20beautiful%20climate,%20the%20scenic%20beauty,%20and%20above%20all%20Coorgs%20are%20wonderful%20and%20loving%20people%E2%80%A6..living%20in%20Coorg%20was%20heaven%E2%80%A6compared%20to%20the%20hustle%20and%20bustle%20of%20city%20life.%20Mercara%20is%20a%20small%20town;%20headquaters%20of%20Coorg%20disctrict%E2%80%A6.It%20is%20a%20very%20small%20place%E2%80%A6..its%20a%20place%20where%20everybody%20knows%20everybody%E2%80%A6.and%20I%20loved%20to%20walk%20around%20rather%20than%20using%20a%20vehicle%E2%80%A6.you%20get%20everything%20in%20and%20around%20Madkeri%E2%80%A6there%20is%20one%20Aruna%20stores%20where%20you%20get%20almost%20anything%20and%20if%20you%20cant%20get%20it%20the%20owner%20will%20make%20sure%20that%20he%20is%20able%20to%20get%20it%20within%20a%20day%20or%20to%E2%80%A6.and%20Coorg%20Shoe%20Park%20was%20my%20favorite%20shop%20where%20u%20get%20all%20kinds%20of%20shoes,%20sandals,%20bags%E2%80%A6and%20that%20too%20at%20a%20low%20price%20compared%20to%20Kerala%E2%80%A6.even%20the%20shop%20owners,%20small%20roadside%20vendors%E2%80%A6.I%20mean%20just%20about%20everybody%20knows%20everybody%20in%20this%20small%20place.%20Fridays%20are%20market%20days%20when%20a%20big%20market%20is%20opened%20the%20whole%20day%20and%20planters%20from%20in%20and%20around%20will%20come%20to%20Madikeri%20to%20stock%20up%20their%20supplies%20for%20a%20week%20(most%20of%20the%20planters%20live%20outside%20the%20town%20limits%20at%20their%20estates).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20coming%20to%20Methi%20leaves%E2%80%A6..a%20typical%20Coorg%20morning%20was%20started%20by%20the%20suppu%20(greens)%20lady...with%20a%20large%20basket%20of%20%E2%80%9Csuppu%E2%80%9D%20or%20greens%20usually%20grown%20by%20her%E2%80%A6so%20fresh%E2%80%A6..fresh%20coriander,%20mint%20leaves,%20methi%20leaves,%20keerai,%20palak%20leaves,%20basala%20suppu%20(a%20variety%20of%20palak%20and%20Coorgs%20states%20this%20is%20the%20real%20spinach%20that%20Popye%20the%20Sailor%20has%20)%E2%80%A6.After%20coming%20to%20Calicut%20I%20missed%20the%20greens%20%E2%80%A6missed%20the%20walks%E2%80%A6.missed%20everything%20that%20I%20used%20to%20take%20it%20as%20granted%20there%20in%20Coorg%E2%80%A6all%20the%20greens%20which%20were%20so%20abundant%20there%E2%80%A6.even%20some%20fruits%20and%20vegetable%20are%20very%20hard%20to%20get%20here%E2%80%A6so%20when%20I%20got%20some%20methi%20leaves%20after%20a%20very%20looooooong%20time,%20I%20was%20really%20happy%E2%80%A6.methi%20paratha%20is%20not%20a%20coorgi%20cusine%E2%80%A6.it%20is%20a%20pure%20North%20Indian%20one%E2%80%A6but%20because%20I%20learned%20it%20in%20Coorg%E2%80%A6I%20will%20label%20it%20as%20a%20Coorgi%20dish%E2%80%A6.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFresh%20methi/fenugreek%20leaves:%20A%20small%20bunch.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJeera:%20%C2%BD%20tsp.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERed%20chilly%20powder:%20%C2%BD%20tsp.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESalt.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGhee/vanaspati/oil.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhole%20wheat%20flour:%201%20%C2%BD%20cup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.Wash%20thoroughly%20the%20leaves%20and%20let%20it%20dry%20on%20a%20strainer,%20remove%20the%20leaves%20from%20the%20stem%20and%20chop%20very%20finely.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.Heat%201%20tsp%20oil%20in%20a%20pan%20and%20put%20in%201/2%20tsp%20jeera%20and%20allow%20it%20to%20splutter.%20Turn%20off%20heat%20add%201/2%20tsp%20chilly%20powder%20(otherwise%20it%20will%20get%20burnt).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Switch%20on%20the%20fire%20and%20add%20the%20leaves,%20salt,%20and%20fry%20till%20all%20the%20water%20is%20incorporated%20and%20let%20it%20cool.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Put%20this%20into%20the%20flour%20and%20knead%20with%20water%20into%20a%20firm%20but%20soft%20dough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.%20Make%20equal%20sized%20balls%20and%20roll%20out%20each.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E6.%20Fry%20on%20tawa%20and%20drizzle%20ghee/vanaspati/oil%20on%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E7.%20Serve%20hot%20with%20Raita,%20or%20any%20curry.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
