%20are%20the%20largest%20edible%20fruit%20(a%20berry%20to%20be%20precise)%20native%20to%20North%20America.%20%20I%20foraged%20mine%20from%20a%20small%20grove%20in%20the%20woods%20that%20I%20happened%20to%20find%20thanks%20to%20the%20directions%20of%20a%20friend.%20%20This%20fruit%20grows%20on%20small%20trees%20that%20are%20native%20to%20the%20Northeast,%20though%20with%20the%20disappearance%20of%20our%20natural%20woodlands%20with%20development,%20there%20aren%E2%80%99t%20so%20many%20around%20anymore.%20%20The%20trees%20tend%20to%20spread%20about,%20forming%20groves%20with%20both%20mature%20trees%20and%20saplings,%20all%20of%20which%20are%20easily%20distinguished%20from%20the%20other%20trees%20in%20the%20woods%20by%20their%20enormous%20leaves%20that%20come%20in%20groups%20of%20threes%20(thus%20the%20%E2%80%9Ctriloba%E2%80%9D%20in%20its%20botanical%20name).%20%20%20My%20mom%20knows%20an%20old%20song%20from%20when%20she%20was%20a%20girl%20about%20going%20picking%20in%20the%20pawpaw%20patch%20so%20I%20think%20this%20fruit%20was%20much%20more%20popular%20back%20in%20the%20day%20when%20there%20were%20plenty%20of%20rural%20areas%20still%20sustaining%20large%20numbers%20of%20native%20trees.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIronically,%20the%20pawpaw%20today%20is%20once%20again%20in%20vogue,%20being%20touted%20as%20the%20next%20big%20thing%20in%20local%20fruit%20production.%20%20A%20few%20passionate%20folks%20have%20even%20taken%20upon%20themselves%20the%20task%20of%20planting%20entire%20orchards%20of%20pawpaws.%20%20This%20is%20a%20rather%20selfless%20act%20as%20these%20trees%20take%20nearly%2020%20years%20to%20mature%20and%20bear%20enough%20fruit%20to%20make%20them%20a%20viable%20commercial%20venture.%20%20In%20other%20words,%20you%E2%80%99d%20best%20be%20young%20when%20you%20plant%20your%20pawpaw%20trees.%20%20%20All%20joking%20aside,%20pawpaw%20trees%20are%20beautiful%20in%20the%20home%20landscape%20and%20should%20be%20consider%20if%20you%20are%20looking%20to%20plant%20a%20native%20tree%20in%20your%20yard%20or%20even%20city%20parks.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20fruit%20is%20well%20worth%20the%20wait.%20It%E2%80%99s%20completely%20unexpected%20in%20its%20flavor%20and%20texture,%20both%20of%20which%20are%20quite%20tropical.%20%20The%20texture,%20when%20ripe,%20is%20nearly%20identical%20to%20that%20of%20a%20banana.%20%20The%20flavor%20is%20a%20good%20deal%20harder%20to%20pin%20down%20with%20an%20easy%20comparison.%20%20Some%20people%20claim%20they%20taste%20like%20mangos,%20others%20like%20pineapple,%20still%20others%20think%20pawpaws%20taste%20like%20any%20old%20ripe%20banana.%20%20I%20can%20only%20say%20that%20in%20my%20opinion,%20they%20are%20delicious,%20sweet%20and%20%E2%80%9Ctropical%E2%80%9D,%20but%20not%20really%20tasting%20like%20any%20of%20those%20other%20fruits.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20oblong%20fat%20green%20fruit%20begins%20ripening%20in%20mid%20September%20and%20is%20best%20shaken%20off%20the%20tree%20a%20little%20under%20ripe%20and%20set%20on%20a%20kitchen%20counter%20to%20soften.%20%20If%20you%20let%20the%20fruit%20ripen%20on%20the%20tree,%20it%E2%80%99ll%20fall%20to%20the%20ground%20and%20be%20immediately%20gobbled%20up%20by%20any%20and%20all%20woodland%20critters%20who%20are%20smart%20enough%20to%20realize%20that%20pawpaws%20are%20a%20real%20delicacy.%20%20%20Once%20harvested,%20pawpaws%20should%20be%20left%20on%20the%20countertop%20to%20ripen%20for%20just%20a%20few%20days%20until%20they%20get%20brown%20and%20squishy.%20%20That%E2%80%99s%20right%E2%80%A6brown%20and%20squishy!%20%20That%E2%80%99s%20when%20the%20sugars%20really%20develop%20and%20the%20softer%20texture%20makes%20it%20easier%20to%20push%20out%20the%20large%20seeds%20from%20the%20flesh.%20Be%20careful%20though,%20they%20have%20a%20very%20short%20%E2%80%9Cshelf%20life%E2%80%9D%20(one%20of%20the%20reasons%20they%20aren%E2%80%99t%20more%20common)%20and%20can%20quickly%20go%20past%20their%20prime.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow,%20I%E2%80%99m%20sure%20I%E2%80%99ve%20piqued%20your%20interest.%20%20I%20wish%20that%20I%20could%20tell%20you%20all%20right%20where%20to%20go%20to%20get%20some%20of%20this%20delicious%20fruit%20next%20September.%20%20Sadly,%20I%20can%E2%80%99t.%20%20There%E2%80%99s%20a%20slim%20chance%20you%E2%80%99ll%20find%20it%20at%20a%20farmers%20market.%20%20There%E2%80%99s%20an%20even%20better%20chance%20that%20if%20you%20have%20some%20woodland%20near%20you%20that%20hasn%E2%80%99t%20been%20disturbed%20in%20many%20years%20that%20you%20can%20forage%20a%20basketful%20for%20yourself.%20%20%20The%20demand%20is%20certainly%20increasing%20for%20them%20and%20I%20hope%20that,%20like%20the%20tasty%20ground%20cherry,%20they%E2%80%99ll%20show%20up%20more%20and%20more%20with%20the%20new%20interest%20in%20locally%20grown%20and%20unusual%20fruit.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20should%20you%20get%20your%20hands%20on%20some%20pawpaws%20next%20year,%20I%E2%80%99d%20highly%20recommend%20using%20them%20in%20this%20luscious%20ice%20cream!%20In%20general%20though,%20you%20can%20treat%20pawpaws%20like%20
