%20passed%20away%20suddenly%20when%20I%20was%20in%20University%20(late%201990's).%20%20I%20was%20going%20home%20for%20reading%20week,%20and%20getting%20ready%20to%20celebrate%20my%20grandparents%2055th%20anniversary%20at%20a%20Pizza%20Hut%20with%20anchovy%20pizza%20and%20beer.%20%20The%20time%20I%20got%20off%20the%20bus%20from%20Peterborough%20to%20Toronto%20and%20made%20it%20to%20my%20brothers%20place%20to%20be%20picked%20up,%20I%20received%20news%20that%20she%20had%20a%20stroke.%20%20She%20passed%20away%20that%20evening%20after%20having%20a%20chance%20to%20say%20goodbye%20to%20everyone.%20%20This%20was%20my%20first%20close%20loss%20and%20was%20quite%20upset%20as%20my%20family%20was%20really%20close.%20%20Since%20my%20Mama's%20death,%20I%20really%20hadn't%20had%20pastel.%20%20My%20dads%20side%20of%20the%20family%20had%20the%20recipe,%20but%20nobody%20really%20made%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMaking%20this%20meal%20was%20my%20opportunity%20to%20pay%20tribute%20to%20my%20Mama%20and%20fulfill%20that%20last%20recipe%20request%20from%20my%20brother.%20So%20I%20invited%20my%20in-laws%20over%20for%20dinner%20to%20share%20in%20this%20experience%20knowing%20that%20they%20would%20not%20have%20tried%20pastel%20yet.%20%20They%20loved%20it%20(not%20surprising).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20what%20sets%20pastel%20away%20from%20other%20shepherds%20pies?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMeat%20is%20cooked%20with%20plenty%20of%20flavours%20including%20lemon%20and%20nutmegPotato%20has%20the%20distinct%20Moroccan%20flavoring%20of%20tumeric%20(I%20was%20really%20surprised%20there%20was%20no%20cumin,%20a%20really%20popular%20spice%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ein%20Moroccan%20dishes)Sliced%20hard%20boiled%20eggs,%20for%20flavour%20and%20texture.Standard%20shepherds%20pie%20is%20meat%20then%20potato.%20%20Pastel%20is%20layered,%20potato,%20meat,%20boiled%20eggs,%20potato.Mama's%20Pastel%20(Moroccan%20Shepherd's%20Pie)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20deep%20pan%20on%20medium%20heat,%20add%20beef,%20water%20and%20start%20to%20brown%20the%20beef,%20using%20a%20potato%20masher%20to%20break%20up%20beef.%20Add%20the%20lemon%20as%20soon%20as%20the%20meat%20starts%20to%20break%20up.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDrain%20excess%20liquid%20and%20discard%20lemon,%20and%20add%20nutmeg,%20salt%20and%20pepper%20and%20set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20350-degrees.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECombine%20the%201/2%20cup%20of%20potato%20water%20and%20turmeric%20and%20mash%20the%20potatoes%20using%20the%201/2%20cup%20of%20liquid.%20Separate%20into%20two%20portions.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGrease%20the%20inside%20of%20a%20large%20casserole%20dish,%20(8%22%20x%2013%22)%20using%20the%20olive%20oil%20and%20gently%20spread%20half%20of%20the%20potatoes%20evenly%20across%20the%20bottom.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpoon%20the%20meat%20over%20the%20first%20layer%20and%20gently%20spread,%20trying%20not%20to%20compress%20the%20layer%20of%20potato%20underneath.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20egg%20slices%20evenly%20over%20the%20meat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELightly%20spread%20the%20remaining%20potato%20mixture%20over%20the%20meat%20and%20eggs%20and%20make%20a%20pattern%20(or%20just%20lines)%20using%20a%20fork.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBrush%20the%20egg%20wash%20over%20the%20top%20layer%20of%20potatoes%20and%20bake%20for%2045-60%20minutes,%20until%20top%20starts%20to%20turn%20golden%20brown.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGluten%20Free%20Edmonton%20-%20A%20Celiac%20guide%20and%20resource%20for%20gluten%20free%20information%20in%20Edmonton,%20Alberta%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
