Today I am going to bring y’all way down south. Little bit past where all my southern cooking originated and to the “Tropical South”. For those of you new to my page I will explain. I recently moved to South Florida. Ft. Lauderdale to be more precise. I have to admit that it is a very big cultural change. The part I have enjoyed the most so far are the farmers markets that are rich with tropical fruits and vegetables. Then there’s the exotic spices and flavors brought to the area by the Cuban population along with all other islands in the region such as Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and of course Puerto Rico to name a few.
I have been fascinated by the amount of coconut trees here as well. I am not kidding…

%20%20Well%20for%20me,%20I%20wanted%20to%20try%20it%20myself%20but%20I%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20going%20to%20pay%20him%20to%20cut%20it%20open%20for%20me.%20%20No,%20I%20was%20going%20to%20buy%20a%20couple%20(only%20$2.00%20a%20piece)%20and%20take%20them%20home%20and%20get%20to%20the%20root%20(or%20should%20I%20say%20%E2%80%9Cnut%E2%80%9D)%20of%20this%20bad%20boy.%20%20By%20the%20way.%20%20This%20is%20when%20I%20found%20out%20the%20coconuts%20inside%20this%20big%20husked%20mammoth%20was%20not%20brown,%20but%20white%E2%80%A6..more%20on%20that%20in%20a%20bit.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20here%20are%20my%20two%20beauties%20I%20bought.%20%20By%20the%20way,%20those%20blocks%20on%20the%20right%20are%201%20foot%20square.%20%20So%20you%20can%20see%20the%20size%20of%20these%20things.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHmmmm%E2%80%A6%E2%80%A6%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20one%20of%20those%20big%20ole%20machete%E2%80%99s%20that%20guy%20had%20at%20the%20farmers%20market.%20%20So%20I%20chose%20my%20largest%20chefs%20knife.%20%20Sharpened%20up%20real%20nice%20and%20good%20on%20the%20sharpening%20steel%20and%20went%20to%20work.%20%20Well%20actually%20that%E2%80%99s%20not%20true.%20%20After%20sharpening%20the%20knife%20I%20turned%20to%20my%20trusty%20lap%20top%20and%20searched%20on%20how%20to%20open%20these%20things.%20%20That%E2%80%99s%20when%20I%20found%20out%20that%20I%20was%20going%20to%20be%20%E2%80%9Chusking%E2%80%9D%20these%20coconuts.%20%20Now%20I%20have%20husked%20more%20bushels%20of%20corn%20in%20my%20life%20(childhood%E2%80%A6.thanks%20mom)%20than%20I%20want%20to%20remember.%20%20I%20had%20never%20dreamed%20that%20I%E2%80%99d%20be%20%E2%80%9Chusking%E2%80%9D%20coconuts%20in%20sort%20of%20the%20same%20way.%20%20I%20leaned%20where%20the%20%E2%80%9Cnut%E2%80%9D%20is.%20%20Basically%20it%20is%20at%20the%20bottom%20of%20the%20orb%20if%20you%20hold%20it%20stem%20side%20up.%20%20I%20found%20out%20to%20chop%20into%20the%20coconut%20from%20the%20upper%20area%20all%20around%20the%20coconut%20to%20make%20strips%20you%20can%20%E2%80%9Cpeal%E2%80%9D.%20%20Yea%20right,%20more%20like%20yank%20and%20pull,%20and%20tug%20and%20grunt.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20I%20proceeded%20to%20do%20this%20over%20and%20over%20again.%20%20After%20about%205%20minutes%20I%20saw%20a%20global%20area%20forming.%20%20Hey%20that%E2%80%99s%20not%20brown.%20%20It%E2%80%99s%20white.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDid%20I%20get%20a%20bad%20coconut?%20%20Hmmm%E2%80%A6.off%20to%20the%20computer%20to%20Google%20again.%20%20Nope%20that%20is%20a%20what%20a%20fresh%20coconut%20looks%20like.%20%20%20So%20here%20is%20a%20green%20coconut%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20interior%20white%20nut%20freshly%20removed.%20%20Notice%20the%20little%20hole%20in%20the%20top.%20%20I%20got%20all%20fancy%20like%20the%20guy%20at%20the%20flea%20market%20and%20in%20one%20swipe%20I%20took%20off%20the%20top.%20%201,%202,%203,%204,%205.%20%20Yupp,%20still%20have%20all%20my%20fingers.%20%20I%20took%206%20tries%20before%20I%20sliced%20off%20the%20top.%20%20But%20I%20did%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20that%20is%20how%20you%20%E2%80%9CHUSK%E2%80%9D%20a%20fresh%20coconut.%20%20%20Below%20is%20a%20video%20of%20all%20the%20%E2%80%98coconut%20water%E2%80%99%20that%20I%20got%20from%20this%20one%20coconut.%20%20A%20full%208%20ounce%20glass.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20flavor%20is%20just%20a%20bit%20sweet%20and%20does%20not%20taste%20at%20all%20like%20what%20you%20would%20think.%20%20Not%20real%20strong%20or%20flavorful%20but%20it%20is%20Low%20in%20calories,%20naturally%20fat-%20and%20cholesterol%20free,%20more%20potassium%20than%20four%20bananas,%20and%20super%20hydrating%20%E2%80%93%20these%20are%20just%20a%20few%20of%20the%20many%20benefits%20ascribed%20to%20America%E2%80%99s%20latest%20health%20craze:%20coconut%20water.%20(yes,%20I%20got%20that%20from%20the%20internet.%20%20WebMD%20in%20fact)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20if%20you%20have%20the%20chance%20to%20get%20your%20hands%20on%20a%20fresh%20green%20coconut%20give%20this%20a%20try.%20%20You%20will%20be%20rewarded%20with%20a%20nutritious,%20delicious%20natural%20thirst%20quencher.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E6,653%20total%20views,%201%20views%20today%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThank%20you%20so%20much%20for%20visiting%20my%20food%20blog.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20also%20love%20y%E2%80%99alls%20comments.%20So%20please%20don%E2%80%99t%20forget%20to%20share%20them%20below.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
