%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20our%20last%20challenge%20was%20for%20the%20Queen%E2%80%99s%20Diamond%20Jubilee,%20it%20is%20appropriate%20(and%20ironic)%20%20that%20we%20come%20back%20across%20the%20pond%20for%20Indepence%20Day.%20%20%20%20This%20time%20around%20the%20secret%20ingredients%20are%20blueberries,%20barbecue%20sauce,%20and/or%20whipped%20cream.%20%20%20Even%20though%20we%20just%20have%20to%20choose%20one%20ingredient%20and%20we%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20to%20combine%20them%20ALL%20%20into%20an%20edible%20dish,%20I%20always%20hope%20that%20someone%20will%20tackle%20this%20feat%20and%20use%20them%20all%20together.%20%20(Should%20we%20have%20a%20Chopped%20themed%20holiday%20at%20one%20point%20for%20HRC?)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20was%20an%20easy%20pick%20for%20me.%20%20%20Please%20join%20me%20for%20a%20July%204th%20favorite:%20%20%20homemade%20BBQ%20sauce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESweet%20and%20Spicy%20BBQ%20Sauce%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdapted%20from%20Top%20Secret%20Recipes%20(See%20below.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20large%20sauce%20pan,%20heat%20olive%20oil%20and%20saut%C3%A9%20minced%20garlic%20for%20one%20minute.%20%20Do%20not%20burn.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20ketchup,%20vinegar,%20molasses,%20honey,%20brown%20sugar,%20liquid%20smoke,%20chili%20powder,%20Sriracha,%20salt%20and%20pepper.%20%20Whisk%20to%20combine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20can%20see%20all%20the%20pepper%20floating%20on%20top.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20to%20boil,%20and%20then%20reduce%20heat%20to%20a%20low%20simmer.%20%20%20Stir%20periodically.%20%20Simmer%20for%2045-60%20minutes.%20%20%20Store%20in%20the%20refrigerator%20until%20ready%20to%20use.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%20about%20two%20quarts%20plus%201%20cup(ish).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20recipe%20makes%20a%20lot.%20%20%20It%20is%20easily%20halved.%20%20%20%20Use%20this%20on%20any%20meat,%20add%20to%20bake%20beans,%20or%20use%20it%20as%20a%20dipping%20sauce%20for%20grilled%20shrimp%20and%20chicken%20or%20jalapeno%20poppers.%20%20Really,%20I%20haven%E2%80%99t%20found%20anything%20this%20sauce%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20elevate.%20%20%20(Well%20maybe%20blueberries%20with%20whipped%20cream.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%20is%20a%20great%20BBQ%20tip%20when%20grilling:%20%20%20Make%20a%20mop%20using%20rosemary%20sprigs.%20%20%20Use%20the%20sprigs%20to%20sop%20up%20the%20sauce%20and%20brush%20on%20the%20grilled%20meat.%20%20%20This%20gives%20this%20sauce%20(and%20any%20sauce%20used%20with%20grilling)%20another%20level%20of%20flavor.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20technique%20would%20also%20work%20with%20a%20bundle%20of%20thyme%20or%20sage.%20Just%20make%20sure%20it%20is%20a%20woody%20herb%20that%20can%20stand%20up%20to%20the%20dipping%20and%20heat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20put%20a%20dry%20rub%20on%20these%20ribs%20(just%20a%20basic%20Memphis%20rub%20that%20my%20brother-in-law%20made%20for%20us)%20and%20then%20sauced%20them%20up%20during%20the%20last%2010%20minutes%20of%20grilling.%20%20%20%20They%20came%20out%20very%20tender%20with%20just%20the%20right%20amount%20of%20caramelization.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh%20so%20tender%20with%20just%20the%20right%20amount%20of%20burnt%20ends!%20%20These%20are%20a%20mess%20to%20eat%20but%20well%20worth%20the%20extra%20napkins!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20recipe%20is%20based%20on%20one%20from%20my%20favorite%20cookbook,%20one%20that%20I%20am%20embarrassed%20about.%20%20%20I%20think%20I%20have%20mentioned%20this%20before.%20%20I%20really%20don%E2%80%99t%20know%20why%20I%20hide%20this%20recipe%20book.%20%20%20Maybe%20it%20is%20because%20it%20is%20a%20full%20of%20knock-offs%20of%20some%20of%20the%20big%20chain%20restaurants.%20%20%20But,%20you%20know,%20with%20a%20little%20tweaking,%20some%20of%20these%20recipes%20are%20pretty%20darn%20good.%20%20%20(It%20is%20definitely%20not%20a%20Dorie%20Greenspan,%20Yotam%20Ottolenghi%20or%20Julia%20Child%20guide%20to%20cooking!)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20original%20recipe%20came%20from%20the%20now%20defunct%20Tony%20Roma%E2%80%99s.%20%20%20I%20was%20excited%20to%20have%20their%20BBQ%20sauce%20recipes%20because%20that%20was%20my%20father-in-law%E2%80%99s%20favorite%20restaurant%20for%20a%20while.%20%20%20%20%20Here%20is%20the%20original%20(plus%20one%20more).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20can%20see%20all%20the%20sauce%20spatters%20and%20notes.%20%20It%20is%20a%20well-used%20recipe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHappy%20Fourth%20of%20July,%20happy%20eating%20and%20happy%20grilling%20today!%20%20%20Enjoy%20your%20time%20with%20family%20and%20friends%20as%20we%20celebrate%20the%20founding%20of%20our%20nation.%20%20%20%20(Oh,%20and%20I%20hope%20you%20can%20ooh%20and%20aah%20over%20some%20fireworks%20as%20well%20tonight.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20next%20HRC%20post%20will%20be%20%20July%2014th%20%E2%80%93%20Bastille%20Day%20(France).%20%20%20The%20secret%20ingredients?%20%20%20Mushrooms%20(limited%20to%20truffles,%20porcinis,%20oysters,%20and%20chanterelles),%20Champagne,%20Brie.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECheck%20out%20the%20Holiday%20Recipe%20Club%20calendar%20for%20all%20the%20other%20upcoming%20events.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
