- 1 cup butter, softened, plus more for buttering baking pan
- 1 3/4 cups white sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 3 cups flour
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 cans (21 oz.) cherry pie filling, drain syrup from one can only
- 1 package (5 oz.) dried cherries
- For the glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 tablespoons milk

%20%20We%20have%20a%20huge%20crawl%20space%20under%20our%20kitchen%20so%20it's%20always%20cold%20and%20I've%20asked%20the%20mister%20many,%20many%20times%20to%20please%20go%20down%20into%20that%20space%20and%20see%20if%20we%20need%20more%20insulation%20-%20and%20he%20refuses,%20saying%20we%20don't%20need%20no%20stinkin'%20insulation!%20%20I've%20told%20you%20before,%20but%20let%20me%20remind%20you,%20the%20mister%20controls%20the%20thermostat...it%20runs%20a%20%22program%22%20the%20mister%20set%20up...the%20furnace%20goes%20on%20thrity%20minutes%20before%20he%20wakes%20in%20the%20morning%20and%20goes%20off%20the%20minute%20he%20walks%20out%20the%20door%20to%20go%20to%20work.%20%20It%20doesn't%20come%20back%20on%20until%20the%20mister%20walks%20in%20the%20door%20at%20zero-dark-thirty...not%20to%20be%20confused%20with%20the%20movie%20about%20the%20world's%20most%20hated%20man...I%20haven't%20seen%20the%20movie%20but%20it%20just%20occurred%20to%20me,%20could%20it%20be%20about%20the%20mister?%20%20Oh%20wait,%20he's%20not%20hated%20the%20world%20over,%20just%20in%20this%20house,%20when%20it's%20freezing%20cold,%20between%20the%20hours%20of%207:00%20am%20and%207:00%20pm.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20I%20stand%20in%20the%20hallway,%20shivering,%20pushing%20the%20damn%20thermostat%20button%20every%20day%20-%20several%20times%20-%20to%20fire%20the%20furnace%20up%20for%20ten%20minutes%20at%20a%20time%20before%20it%20then%20shuts%20off%20to%20resume%20the%20program,%20%20I%20curse%20the%20mister.%20%20I%20call%20him%20at%20Global%20Headquarters%20and%20demand%20that%20he%20tell%20me%20how%20to%20keep%20the%20furnace%20running...he%20cannot%20remember...how%20convenient...he%20tells%20me%20to%20find%20the%20manual...it's%20no%20where%20to%20be%20found...and%20then%20he%20says,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%22Our%20utility%20bill%20last%20month%20was%20the%20highest%20it's%20ever%20been,%20so%20why%20do%20you%20need%20to%20run%20the%20furnace%20all%20day%20long?!?%20%20%20You've%20got%20to%20turn%20off%20the%20lights,%20too!%20And%20if%20you%20didn't%20cook%20so%20much%20the%20gas%20bill%20wouldn't%20be%20so%20high!%20%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI'd%20like%20to%20point%20out%20the%20obvious...last%20month%20we%20had%20Christmas%20lights%20outside%20-%20so%20of%20course%20our%20bill%20would%20be%20higher...and%20I%20have%20lights%20on%20during%20the%20day%20because%20we%20don't%20have%20SUN!%20%20And...%20if%20I%20didn't%20cook%20so%20much?!?!?!%20%20Oh%20reee-heeee-ly?%20%20Well,%20that%20can%20be%20remedied!%20%20I%20informed%20the%20mister%20that%20I%20would%20stop%20cooking/baking%20immediately%20and%20then%20asked%20if%20he%20would%20mind%20stopping%20at%20KFC%20on%20the%20way%20home%20to%20pick%20up%20his%20dinner?%20%20He%20thought%20that%20was%20funny.%20%20I%20wasn't%20laughing.%20%20Eventually%20neither%20was%20he.%20%20But%20I%20could%20only%20hold%20out%20for%20so%20long,%20because%20punishing%20the%20mister%20just%20punishes%20me!%20%20After%20five%20days%20of%20not%20cooking/baking,%20with%20the%20mister%20having%20dinners%20of%20canned%20soup,%20cereal,%20KFC,%20McDonalds%20and%20bologna%20sandwiches,%20I%20finally%20caved...mainly%20because%20I%20was%20dying%20to%20bake%20these%20bars!!%20%20Look,%20I%20can%20only%20stand%20so%20much...no%20heat%20and%20no%20baking?!?!%20%20I%20was%20worried%20the%20kitchen%20floors%20really%20would%20turn%20to%20ice!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECherry%20Pie%20Cake%20Bars...they%20are%20the%20new%20black.%20%20Seriously,%20they%20are%20that%20good.%20%20What%20other%20dessert%20can%20offer%20you%20both%20pie%20and%20cake%20in%20one%20bite?!?%20%20And%20they%20will%20blow%20any%20lemon%20bar%20right%20off%20the%20platter!%20%20I%20kid%20you%20not!%20%20I%20didn't%20think%20I%20would%20like%20these%20as%20much%20as%20I%20do...but%20really,%20whats%20not%20to%20like?%20%20The%20bottom%20layer%20is%20a%20super%20moist%20cake%20with%20a%20dense%20crumb,%20then%20there's%20the%20cherry%20layer...two%20kinds%20of%20cherries,%20no%20less!%20%20And%20on%20top%20there's%20more%20cake%20drizzled%20with%20a%20vanilla%20sugar%20glaze...oh%20my%20stars,%20these%20are%20dang%20good!%20%20Make%20them%20for%20your%20Valentine...they'll%20warm%20your%20heart,%20even%20if%20your%20furnace%20doesn't%20come%20on%20during%20the%20day!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EButter%20a%209%20x%2013-inch%20baking%20dish%20and%20set%20aside.%20%20Preheat%20oven%20to%20350%20degrees.%20%20In%20the%20bowl%20of%20an%20electric%20mixer,%20cream%20together%20the%20butter%20and%20sugar.%20%20Add%20in%20eggs,%20one%20at%20a%20time,%20beating%20well%20after%20each%20addition.%20%20Add%20in%20extracts.%20%20Add%20in%20salt,%20then%20add%20flour%20to%20the%20mixture,%20beating%20until%20just%20mixed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpread%202/3's%20of%20the%20cake%20batter%20into%20the%20prepared%20pan.%20%20Drain%20one%20can%20of%20the%20cherry%20pie%20filling%20(reserve%20the%20thick%20syrup%20to%20use%20in%20another%20way,%20if%20desired.)%20%20Pour%20one%20can%20of%20cherry%20pie%20filling%20o
