My cooking was heavily influenced by my Hungarian Grandmother, whose life was the kitchen, cooking for 6 children, growing vegetables and canning. I "learned to cook" watching her as she would make doughnuts (jelly) from scratch and "feel". I don't believe she ever owned a cookbook! LOL Living all over the U.S and overseas as a military brat, I learned to cook different regional and ethnic styles. I am now widowed and the kids are grown and gone. But I still cook daily and love to pick up cookbooks, because of the many variations with recipes and techniques. I love kitchen gadgets and appliances and have a large "arsenal" of them. Often, I think "outside the box" and "wing it" with what's on hand.I truly believe that what makes a good cook or Chef is the ability to substitute and visually judge ingrdient amounts. My latest accomplishment is learning Sicilian style cooking, as I now have a Sicilian male friend, and he "hates" Italian cooking! LOL
