Volatility: A measure of risk based on the standard deviation of investment fund performance over 3 years.
Ian Berch: Forward Contracts: A contract in which the seller agrees to deliver a specified commodity or financial instrument at a specified price sometime in the future. The terms of a forward contract are negotiated at the time of the trade. Forward contracts trade "over the counter", as opposed to trading on a market.

Mark Berch: Fixed Income Mutual Fund: An investment fund that uses the proceeds from units sold to investors to invest in securities that generate a reasonably predictable stream of interest or dividend income, such as bonds, debentures and preferred shares.
Actively managed fund: A fund that uses a manager or team to analyze securities and try to beat the market return. The opposite of active management is passive management, found in index funds.

REIT: Real estate investment trusts. In order to qualify as a REIT, a company must derive a certain percentage of income from real estate and pass on 90 percent of its earnings to shareholders. REITs invest in any kind of commercial real estate, from shopping malls to timberlands, even in mortgages. REITs sell on the major exchanges as stocks but can be owned in a mutual fund or ETF.
Diversification: A method of investing that aims to minimize risk and increase return by spreading money among a variety of assets. Allocating investments across asset classes with low or no correlation to one another smoothes out the performance of the portfolio.

International fund: A mutual fund or ETF that invests in companies located in countries with developed markets such as Japan, Great Britain and Australia. Companies established in the home country will not be included in these funds. Ian Berch
Low (or no) Risk: A conservative investment such as a Canada Savings Bond that pays a fixed interest rate based on current rates that is virtually risk free.
