%20%20%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20taste%20the%20%E2%80%9Casparagus%20notes%E2%80%9D%20myself,%20I%20just%20know%20it%E2%80%99s%20yummy%20--%20especially%20sauteed%20up%20in%20olive%20oil%20and%20garlic%20with%20a%20dash%20or%20soy%20sauce%20or%20lemon%20juice%20just%20before%20serving.%20%20It%E2%80%99s%20so%20tender,%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20even%20need%20to%20par-boil%20it,%20although%20if%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20like%20it%20too%20crunchy,%20you%20can%20always%20toss%20a%201/2%20cup%20%20chicken%20or%20vegetable%20stock%20in%20the%20pan%20which%20will%20steam%20the%20broccolini%20some%20as%20you%20saute%20(*%20*see%20recipe%20below).%20My%20family%20ate%20this%20several%20times%20a%20week%20for%20months,%20until%20they%20begged%20for%20something%20different.%20%20%20So%20I%20moved%20on%20to%20Brussels%20sprouts.%20%20I%20began%20eating%20Brussels%20sprouts%20as%20a%20kid,%20mainly%20because%20they%20grossed%20out%20my%20sisters.%20%20Plus,%20they%20were,%20and%20are,%20my%20Dad%E2%80%99s%20favorite%20vegetable,%20and%20even%20as%20a%20kid,%20I%20thought%20my%20dad%20was%20totally%20cool.%20%20As%20an%20adult,%20I%20started%20liking%20Brussels%20sprouts%20for%20real%20and%20the%20only%20reason%20we%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20them%20more%20often%20(as%20in:%20several%20times%20a%20week%20for%20months)%20is%20that%20you%20have%20to%20cut%20the%20ends%20off%20and%20trim%20the%20sprouts%20of%20any%20brownish%20leaves,%20which%20I%20often%20feel%20too%20lazy%20to%20do%20unless%20I%20can%20conscript%20one%20of%20my%20kids%20to%20do%20it.%20%20I%20also%20always%20cut%20them%20in%20half,(the%20sprouts,%20not%20the%20kids,%20the%20kids%20I%20leave%20whole)%20%20so%20one%20side%20can%20get%20brown%20and%20crispy.%20%20Do%20as%20I%20do%20and%20toss%20them%20with%20about%20a%20tablespoon%20of%20olive%20or%20grape%20seed%20oil,%20two%20pinches%20of%20sea%20salt,%20one%20pinch%20of%20brown%20sugar%20and%20a%20scraping%20of%20nutmeg.%20%20(If%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20whole%20nutmeg,%20go%20with%20about%201/8th%20of%20a%20teaspoon%20because%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20want%20to%20overwhelm%20the%20sprout%20flavor).%20%20My%20dear%20friend,%20Jill,%20tells%20me%20she%20makes%20a%20great%20Brussels%20sprouts%20dish%20with%20bacon,%20apples%20and%20thyme.%20%20I%E2%80%99ll%20get%20the%20exact%20recipe%20for%20you,%20because%20she%E2%80%99s%20an%20incredible%20cook%20and%20you%20will%20want%20to%20have%20it.%20%20%20My%20new%20obsession%20is%20parsnips.%20%20Sweeter%20than%20carrots,%20they%20last%20as%20long%20in%20the%20crisper,%20so%20I%20always%20seem%20to%20have%20some%20on%20hand.%20%20You%20can%20slice%20them%20up,%20along%20with%20some%20carrots%20and%20steam/saute%20(**,%20again)%20them%20with%20olive%20oil,%20%20plunking%20in%20a%20a%20last%20minute%20teaspoon%20of%20butter%20and%20a%20sprinkling%20of%20dill.%20%20You%20can%20roast%20them%20in%20a%20450%20oven%20for%2015%20minutes%20after%20tossing%20with%20olive%20oil%20and%20salt.%20%20You%20can%20cut%20%20several%20up%20and%20put%20them%20in%20a%20big%20pot%20with%20potatoes%20them%20mash%20them%20all%20together%20with%20hot%20milk%20and%20butter.%20%20Every%20one%20will%20wonder%20what%20that%20secret%20sweetness%20is%20in%20your%20mashed%20%22potatoes%22.%20%20And,%20I%20always%20add%20parsnips%20to%20vegetable%20stock.%20%20Last%20night,%20while%20still%20suffering%20under%20the%20weight%20of%20a%20dreadful%2048%20hour%20cold,%20I%20bought%20an%20already%20roasted%20chicken,%20shredded%20it,%20steamed%20up%20some%20parsnips,%20potatoes,%20carrots%20and,%20yes,%20broccolini%20(I%20had%20a%20writing%20teacher%20who%20once%20said%20stories%20should%20always%20come%20full%20circle,%20and%20look!%20%20I've%20done%20it!)%20in%20about%20a%20cup%20of%20my%20vegetable%20stock.%20%20When%20the%20vegetables%20were%20almost%20cooked,%20I%20grated%20some%20ginger%20into%20it%20and%20added%20some%20salt,%20pepper%20and%20a%20few%20dashes%20of%20soy%20sauce.%20%20Very%20yummy.%20%20We%20all%20ate%20it%20up.%20Then%20I%20played%20Viva%20La%20Vida,%20and%20danced%20around%20the%20kitchen%20until%20my%20sinuses%20pounded.%20Daughters%20and%20dogs%20ran%20from%20embarrassment,%20while%20my%20husband%20just%20laughed%20and%20ate%20the%20leftovers.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E**To%20Steam/Saute%20(I%20learned%20this%20technique%20from%20How%20To%20Cook%20Without%20a%20Book%20by%20Pam%20Anderson)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPut%20about%201/3%20cup%20of%20water%20or%20stock%20in%20a%20pan%20with%201-2%20tablespoons%20of%20oil%20(olive,%20grapeseed,%20or%20even%20butter%20or%20bacon%20fat)%20along%20with%20about%201lb%20of%20vegetables.%20%20Cover%20and%20steam%20until%20veggies%20are%20almost%20tender.%20%20Add%20a%20pinch%20or%20two%20of%20sea%20or%20kosher%20salt%20and%20some%20pepper.%20%20Saute%20until%20all%20the%20water%20is%20evaporated,%20then%201%20to%202%20minutes%20longer.%20%20Adjust%20seasoning%20if%20need%20be.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20the%20oil%20in%20a%20large%20dutch%20oven%20or%20stock%20pot.%3C/p%3E%3
