- 1 tbsp red icing color
- 1/2 tbsp white vinegar
- For Icing
- 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter softened
- 1 tsp clear vanilla extract ( i just used the regular vanilla extract)
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1-2 tbsp milk (depending on the consistency you prefer, medium or thin)

).%20As%20I%20love%20to%20read,%20my%20husband%20gifted%20me%20this%20very%20thoughtful%20gift,%20e-reader%20called%20Kindle%20:)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20too%20tried%20to%20make%20the%20day%20special%20for%20him.%20Apart%20from%20the%20gift,%20I%20made%20special%20lunch%20for%20him%20and%20also%20baked%20the%20heart%20shaped%20red%20velvet%20cake%20for%20him.%20He%20was%20pleasantly%20surprised%20and%20loved%20the%20cake.Cake%20not%20only%20turned%20out%20delicious%20but%20beautiful%20too.%20As%20the%20name%20says,%20this%20cake%20has%20a%20dramatic%20red%20color%20which%20is%20usually%20offset%20by%20the%20white%20cream%20icing.%20I%20did%20some%20little%20decoration%20with%20whatever%20little%20time%20I%20had%20in%20hand%20before%20my%20husband%20could%20show%20up%20for%20lunch%20:)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20going%20over%20the%20recipes%20from%20different%20sites%20and%20loved%20the%20presentation%20and%20recipe%20at%20Wilton's%20site.%20I%20followed%20the%20recipe%20as%20is%20from%20there%20and%20the%20results%20were%20gorgeous.%20I%20recently%20order%20the%20basic%20cake%20decorating%20set%20from%20Wilton%20and%20tried%20a%20couple%20of%20designing%20tips%20from%20there.While%20working%20with%20disposable%20icing%20bags%20(in%20Wilton%20set)%20not%20only%20the%20cake%20but%20my%20clothes%20ate%20the%20icing%20too%20:D%20%20Hoping%20to%20improve%20with%20each%20bake.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELook%20at%20the%20vibrant%20and%20beautiful%20red%20color%20with%20layer%20of%20delicious%20butter-cream%20icing%20in%20between.%20This%20is%20the%20first%20time%20I%20made%20the%20butter-cream%20icing.%20It%20turned%20out%20smooth%20and%20delicious%20and%20very%20easy%20to%20work%20with.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%203%20cups%20of%20icing.%20Extra%20can%20be%20stored%20in%20refrigerator%20for%20upto%202%20weeks.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMethod:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Pre-heat%20oven%20to%20350%20degree%20F.%20Prepare%20about%20greasing%20a%209%20inch%20round%20pan.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20In%20a%20bowl,%20sift%20together%20flour,%20cocoa%20and%20salt.%20Keep%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20In%20a%20large%20bowl,%20beat%20butter,%20sugar%20and%20vanilla%20extract%20until%20light%20and%20fluffy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Add%20the%20eggs%20and%20red%20icing%20color;%20mix%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.%20Add%20flour%20mixture%20alternately%20with%20the%20buttermilk%20to%20the%20butter%20mixture,%20blending%20until%20well%20blended.%20Stir%20baking%20soda%20into%20vinegar%20and%20fold%20into%20the%20batter%20carefully.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E6.%20Pour%20the%20batter%20into%20the%20prepared%20pan%20and%20bake%20for%2030-35%20minutes%20or%20until%20toothpick%20inserted%20in%20the%20center%20comes%20out%20clean.%20Cool%20for%2010%20minutes%20before%20inverting%20the%20cake%20onto%20cooling%20rack.%20Then%20cool%20completely.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIcing%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20large%20bowl,%20cream%20shortening%20and%20butter%20with%20the%20electric%20mixer.%20Add%20vanilla.%20Gradually%20add%20sugar,%201%20cup%20at%20a%20time,%20beating%20well%20at%20medium%20speed.%20When%20all%20sugar%20has%20been%20mixed,%20icing%20will%20appear%20dry.%20Add%20milk,%201%20tbsp%20at%20a%20time%20and%20beat%20well%20until%20icing%20is%20fluffy%20and%20creamy.%20Keep%20the%20icing%20refrigerated%20until%20ready%20to%20use.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAssembling%20the%20Cake%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Level%20the%20cake%20by%20scraping%20the%20sides%20and%20the%20top.%20Then%20cut%20the%20cake%20into%20half%20horizontally%20using%20a%20serrated%20knife.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Spread%20some%20icing%20in%20between%20and%20put%20the%20two%20layers%20together.%20Cover%20the%20cake%20completely%20with%20icing%20and%20smooth%20it%20out%20using%20flat%20spatula.%20Decorate%20as%20you%20please%20using%20colors%20of%20your%20choice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECool%20the%20cake%20in%20the%20refrigerator%20for%20a%20while%20before%20slicing.%20Then...Dig%20in!!%20:)%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
