Dear Food Diary:
For the past 2 weeks I’ve been walking by Tofuro daily. Greeted by the sight of a friendly face making fresh handmade soba.
Our friends have a chatty toddler and baby, so we needed ample seating and space. This was the perfect setting and opportunity to finally check it out. Freshly made soba, tofu and a whole menu of choices, from sashimi to grilled fish. Fried chicken and rice bowls. There was something for everyone.
Traditional Japanese decor. Warm and friendly. With so many little joints we’ve been squeezing into just for a bite, it was nice to be able to stretch out and sit comfortably. English menu with photos (totally appreciate it).

.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFresh%20Handmade%20Soba:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20watching%20that,%20of%20course%20I%20had%20to%20order%20soba.%20I%20vote%20for%20cold%20soba%20all%20the%20way.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECold%20Soba%20with%20Maitake%20Mushroom%20Tempura%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBeautifully%20simple%20and%20great%20for%20summer.%20Part%20healthy,%20part%20naughty,%20awesome%20pairing.%20Just%20$8,%20crazy%20I%20know!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20soba%20is%20100%25%20buckwheat.%20Perfectly%20chewy%20and%20nutty.%20A%20mild%20savory%20and%20sweet%20soy%20base%20with%20grated%20daikon%20and%20scallions.%20So%20fresh.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20whole%20blossom%20of%20maitake%20tempura%20seems%20so%20lavish%20in%20New%20York%20standards,%20maitake%20mushrooms%20aren%E2%80%99t%20cheap.%20But%20in%20Japan%20these%20are%20fairly%20inexpensive.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20fragrant.%20I%20think%20this%20would%20compare%20to%20a%20bouquet%20of%20flowers.%20Some%20days,%20I%20would%20prefer%20it.%20And%20yes,%20anything%20fried%20does%20taste%20better.%20It%E2%80%99s%20so%20crunchy%20and%20aromatic.%20This%20has%20become%20one%20of%20my%20favorite%20tempura%20ingredients.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPeanut%20Tofu%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHad%20a%20sweet%20finish.%20Think%20peanut%20custard.%20This%20is%20slightly%20sticky.%20Like%20a%20mochi-jelly-tofu%20bastard%20child.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENext%20time%20around,%20we%E2%80%99ll%20have%20to%20try%20their%20handmade%20regular%20tofu.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESashimi%20of%20Fresh%20Squid%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESweet%20and%20chewy%20strips%20of%20ocean%20gummy.%20It%E2%80%99s%20an%20acquired%20texture%20for%20sure.%20I%20totally%20love%20it.%20Specially%20with%20that%20bright,%20mint%20like%20shiso%20leaf%20and%20a%20dash%20of%20soy%20and%20wasabi.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGrilled%20Sweetfish%20with%20Salt%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELots%20of%20bones,%20not%20much%20meat%20and%20what%20was%20there%20tasted%20extremely%20salty.%20A%20bit%20fishy.%20Not%20a%20hit%20around%20the%20table.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGrilled%20Atka%20Mackerel%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20one%20of%20my%20favorites%20at%20Riki%20in%20Midtown%20East.%20Here,%20the%20fish%20is%20very%20meaty%20and%20nicely%20grilled.%20Chard%20around%20the%20edges.%20Evenly%20seasoned.%20Even%20the%20kids%20loved%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFried%20Chicken%20with%20Garlic%20Ginger%20Sauce%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOhhh%20fantastic%20*licking%20fingers*.%20Asian%20style%20KFC%20at%20its%20best.%20We%20had%20ordered%20these%20for%20the%20kids,%20but%20the%20big%20kids%20ended%20up%20devouring%20it%20all%20instead.%20Very%20soy%20garlicky%20with%20a%20kick%20from%20the%20ginger.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETofuro%20have%20several%20locations%20all%20over%20Japan.%20Food%20was%20quite%20good%20and%20fairly%20priced.%20A%20great%20choice%20for%20large%20groups.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EP.S.%20Chubby%E2%80%99s%20Rating:www.tofuro.jp%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3-37,%20Kandasakumacho,%20Chiyoda-ku,%20Tokyo,%20101-0025%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E03-3865-0880%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(We%20went%20to%20the%20Akihabara%20location)%20Check%20for%20other%20locations%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
