When I'm cooking an Indian dinner I'm always looking for something interesting to fix as a dessert. Over the years I've served many things, Orange flower ice cream, rosewater ice cream with pistachios, kheer (rice pudding) semolina pudding, burfi, fresh fruit, baked yogurt, roast bananas, I've even rolled my own Paan a time or two. You name it, I've tried it. It's always a delicate balance between sweet, and "oh my god..I can't possibly eat anymore...what? Chocolate???!!"
Ok, so what does all this have to do with Chuckles with multicolored jelly candy that my husband is hooked on? Well, actually quite a lot.

%20semolina%20pudding,%20burfi,%20fresh%20fruit,%20baked%20yogurt,%20roast%20bananas,%20I've%20even%20rolled%20my%20own%20Paan%20a%20time%20or%20two.%20You%20name%20it,%20I've%20tried%20it.%20It's%20always%20a%20delicate%20balance%20between%20sweet,%20and%20%22oh%20my%20god..I%20can't%20possibly%20eat%20anymore...what?%20Chocolate???!!%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOk,%20so%20what%20does%20all%20this%20have%20to%20do%20with%20Chuckles%20with%20multicolored%20jelly%20candy%20that%20my%20husband%20is%20hooked%20on?%20Well,%20actually%20quite%20a%20lot.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%20in%20Sonoma%20we%20have%20a%20very%20charming%20old%20fashioned%20style%20candy%20store%20called%20Tiddle-E-Winks.%20It's%20a%20really%20cute%20place%20and%20if%20you%20ever%20get%20to%20Sonoma%20definitely%20worth%20a%20visit.%20One%20of%20the%20things%20they%20do%20at%20Tiddle-E-Winks%20is%20have%20little%20cards%20for%20kids%20where%20their%20moms%20pay%20say%205%20bucks%20and%20then%20they%20get%20a%20little%20stamp%20on%20their%20card%20when%20they%20come%20in%20for%20their%20candy..sort%20of%20a%20candy%20account%20if%20you%20will.%20The%20cards%20are%20kept%20in%20a%20little%20tin%20recipe%20box%20on%20the%20counter%20and%20my%20husband%20is%20the%20only%20card%20holder%20over%2012.%20You%20see,%20he%20loves%20Chuckles.%20For%20anyone%20who's%20not%20familiar%20with%20them,%20Chuckles%20are%20a%20brightly%20colored%20jelly%20candy%20that%20my%20husbands'%20Uncle%20Bob%20hooked%20him%20on%20at%20the%20age%20of%206.%20These%20are%20Chuckles.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere's%20a%20whole%20ritual,%20order,%20whatever%20you%20call%20it,%20to%20eating%20them.%20Take%20it%20from%20me,%20it's%20a%20guy%20thing.%20They%20start%20with%20the%20green%20Chuckle%20which%20is%20the%20least%20popular%20Chuckle%20since%20it%20is%20the%20color%20of%20vegetables,%20and%20salad%20all%20non%20guy%20things.%20They%20work%20their%20way%20up%20the%20package%20to%20the%20crowning%20glory..The%20Red%20Chuckle.%20One%20day%20I%20caught%20my%20husband%20very%20upset%20at%20the%20candy%20store%20buying%20a%20second%20package%20of%20Chuckles.%20I%20asked%20what%20was%20the%20matter%20and%20he%20said%20that%20his%20friend%20Andy%20had%20asked%20for%20one%20and%20had%20TAKEN%20THE%20RED%20CHUCKLE!!!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20NOT%20done.%20I%20said%20%22so,%20eat%20the%20rest%22.%20He%20said%20%22no,%20that's%20not%20the%20right%20order%20I%20have%20to%20start%20over.%22%20He%20bought%20another%20pack%20of%20Chuckles%20and%20would%20never%20go%20near%20Andy%20while%20he%20was%20eating%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20other%20day%20while%20thinking%20of%20Chuckles,%20he%20was%20reminiscing%20over%20some%20fancy%20French%20jelly%20candies%20he'd%20once%20had%20.%20Sort%20of%20the%20uber%20Chuckle.%20A%20Chuckle%20with%20an%20Ivy%20League%20education%20if%20you%20will.%20He%20was%20wishing%20I%20could%20make%20such%20a%20candy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWell,%20I%20thought%20why%20not.%20Surely%20it%20couldn't%20be%20that%20hard.%20This%20thing%20he%20was%20looking%20for%20is%20a%20medieval%20French%20confection%20known%20as%20Les%20Pates%20Des%20Fruits.%20A%20Fruit%20Pate,%20usually%20made%20of%2050%25%20pureed%20fruit%20and%2050%25%20sugar%20and%20insanely%20delicious.%20So,%20I%20set%20off%20to%20investigate%20and%20make%20some.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20a%20great%20deal%20of%20research,%20going%20over%20many%20recipes%20I%20came%20up%20with%20a%20basic%20plan%20for%20making%20my%20upscale%20Chuckles.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20didn't%20exactly%20come%20out%20as%20Alan%20was%20dreaming,%20but%20he%20loved%20them,%20and%20so%20do%20I.%20They%20were%20refreshing,%20easy%20to%20make,%20very%20low%20in%20sugar%20and%20I%20thought%20ideal%20for%20a%20treat%20after%20an%20Indian%20meal.%20A%20very%20satisfying%20dessert,%20so%20that's%20why%20I've%20included%20them%20here.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20recipe%20is%20one%20of%20the%20easiest%20I've%20seen.%20Start%20off%20with:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.)%206%20juice%20oranges%20(Valencias)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.)%20cut%20them%20in%20halves%20and%20juice%20them%20until%20you%20have%201%20cup%20of%20fresh%20orange%20juice.%20Save%20the%20orange%20shells.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.)%20take%20your%20orange%20shells%20and%20remove%20the%20pulp%20without%20poking%20any%20holes%20in%20the%20skin.%20This%20is%20what%20is%20going%20to%20hold%20our%20dessert.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.)%20mix%201%20cup%20of%20orange%20juice%20with%201/8%20of%20a%20cup%20of%20sugar.%20Bring%20it%20to%20a%20boil.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.)%20in%20a%20separate%20cup,%20sprinkle%201%20envelope%20of%20plain%20gelatin%20over%201/4%20cup%20of%20water.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E6.)%20When%20the%20juice%20boils,%20take%20it%20from%20the%20flame%20and%20stir%20your%20water/gelatin%20mixture%20into%20it.%20Blend%20it%20in%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow,%20set%20your%20orange%20peel%20halves%20in%20a%20muffin%20cup.%20This%20will%20stabilize%20them%20while%20they're%20chilling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E7.)%20pour%20the%20orange%20juice%20mixture%20into%20the%20cleaned%20out%20orange%20skins.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFill%20them%20to%20the%20brim.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20take%20the%20muffin%20tin%20and%20slide%20it%20into%20the%20fridge%20to%20chill%20for%20about%202%20to%203%20hours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20you're%20ready%20to%20enjoy%20your%20orange%20slices,%20take%20them%20out%20of%20the%20muffin%20tin%20and%20slice%20them%20as%20you%20would%20a%20regular%20orange.%20For%20an%20extra%20kick%20you%20might%20try%20alternating%20them%20on%20the%20plate%20with%20%22real%22%20orange%20slices.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20a%20tasty%20light%20dessert,%20refreshing%20served%20with%20coffee%20or%20tea.%20Cookies%20can%20be%20added,%20or%20not.%20I've%20seen%20this%20recipe%20done%20with%20Blood%20Oranges.%20My%20French%20neighbor%20said%20that%20over%20there%20they%20make%20this%20dessert%20with%20Meyer%20lemons.%20It's%20something%20that%20begs%20to%20be%20experimented%20with.%20One%20thing%20my%20husband%20likes%20to%20do%20is%20dip%20these%20in%20granulated%20sugar.%20Personally,%20I%20think%20that's%20overkill%20and%20these%20little%20fruit%20gels%20are%20not%20of%20the%20gummy,%20manufactured%20consistency%20that%20would%20hold%20up%20well%20with%20lots%20of%20sugar%20applied.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20while%20these%20aren't%20exactly%20Chuckles,%20they%20are%20a%20great%20finish%20for%20a%20spicy%20meal%20and%20really%20hit%20the%20spot%20around%20our%20house.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
