.%20I%20had%20to%20agree%20when%20I%20merely%20tasted%20it%20the%20first%20time%20that%20it%20was%20not%20my%20mother%E2%80%99s%20oatmeal.%20For%20several%20years,%20I%20made%20it%20for%20him%20alone%20at%20least%20four%20times%20a%20week%20when%20he%20rose%20before%20dawn%20to%20go%20off%20to%20teach%20an%208:00%20a.m.%20class%20at%20Chestnut%20Hill%20College.%20I%20always%20added%20a%20handful%20of%20Craisins%20to%20add%20a%20bit%20of%20sweetness%20and%20because%20cranberries%20are%20supposed%20to%20be%20especially%20healthy%20for%20men.%20When%20we%20visited%20Seattle%20with%20Ari%20several%20years%20ago,%20we%20discovered%20Snoqualmie%20Falls%20Lodge%20Oatmeal.%20It%20is%20our%20favorite,%20but%20probably%20not%20enough%20better%20than%20the%20local%20brands%20to%20justify%20the%20cost%20of%20having%20it%20shipped.%20Mostly,%20we%20buy%20huge%20boxes%20of%20Quaker%20Old%20Fashioned%20Oats%20from%20Costco.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUsually,%20working%20from%20home,%20I%20would%20share%20a%20cup%20of%20tea%20with%20milk%20as%20Saul%20ate,%20and%20then%20climb%20back%20into%20bed%20for%20an%20hour%20or%20two%20after%20he%20left.%20Usually,%20I%20would%20not%20eat%20again%20until%20lunch%20time.%20Occasionally,%20I%20began%20to%20join%20him%20in%20a%20bowl%20and%20made%20it%20more%20palatable%20to%20me%20by%20adding%20a%20spoonful%20of%20brown%20sugar.%20All%20that%20changed%20about%20three%20years%20ago%20when%20I%20had%20a%20routine%20checkup%20and%20discovered%20that%20my%20A1C%20was%20highly%20elevated%20for%20the%20first%20time%20in%20my%20life.%20Oatmeal,%20I%20eventually%20discovered,%20was%20a%20good%20complex%20carb%20for%20diabetics,%20although%20not%20with%20either%20sugar,%20or%20Craisins.%20I%20learned%20that%20fresh%20berries,%20particularly%20blueberries,%20which%20I%20love,%20are%20very%20healthy%20and%20do%20not%20raise%20the%20glycemic%20index.%20Going%20without%20breakfast%20is%20also%20not%20advisable%20for%20diabetics.%20So,%20for%20the%20last%20three%20years,%20Saul%20and%20I,%20almost%20every%20day,%20eat%20a%20bowl%20of%20this,%20with%20the%20addition%20of%20of%20handful%20of%20frozen%20mixed%20berries%20that%20we%20buy%20at%20Costco%20(blueberries,%20blackberries,%20and%20raspberries)%20with%20whatever%20other%20fresh%20berries%20are%20in%20season%20here%20in%20Florida.%20We%20add%20low-fat%20milk%20to%20taste%20at%20the%20table,%20and%20he%20likes%20a%20lot%20more%20in%20it%20than%20I%20do,%20hence,%20the%20rather%20soupy%20photo.%20In%20recent%20years,%20for%20their%20good%20taste%20and%20health%20benefits,%20we%20also%20top%20it%20with%20a%20spoonful%20of%20hemp%20seeds%20which%20we%20also%20purchase%20at%20Costco.%20A%20few%20weeks%20ago,%20I%20began%20adding%20a%20half%20teaspoon%20of%20cinnamon%20and%20a%20half%20teaspoon%20of%20turmeric%20to%20my%20bowl%20for%20their%20superior%20sugar-lowering%20properties.%20While%20turmeric%20may%20seem%20like%20an%20odd%20choice,%20I%20have%20grown%20to%20enjoy%20that%20spiciness%20along%20with%20the%20texture%20and%20flavor%20of%20my%20steamed%20oatmeal.%20If%20you%20try%20this%20method%20of%20cooking%20oatmeal,%20you%20will%20have%20a%20difficult%20time%20ever%20eating%20instant%20oatmeal%20again.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESteamed%20Oatmeal%20with%20Berries%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(Serves%202)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHealthy%20Optional%20Additions:%20milk,%20almond%20milk,%20coconut%20milk,%20rice%20milk,%20dried%20fruit%20or%20berries,%20fresh%20fruit%20or%20berries,%20pomegranate%20seeds,%20hemp%20seeds,%20sesame%20seeds,%20cinnamon,%20turmeric,%20nutmeg%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%202-%20or%203-quart%20pot%20fitted%20with%20a%20stainless%20steel%20collapsible%20steamer%20insert,%20bring%20enough%20water%20to%20boil%20over%20high%20heat%20to%20just%20cover%20the%20amount%20of%20oatmeal%20you%20are%20about%20to%20add.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20the%20water%20is%20at%20a%20rolling%20boil,%20add%20the%20oatmeal%20(and%20dried%20fruit%20or%20dried%20berries,%20if%20desired)%20and%20boil%20on%20high%20heat%20for%20two%20minutes.%20Turn%20off%20heat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECarefully%20lift%20the%20steamer%20out%20of%20the%20pot%20into%20a%20bowl%20that%20will%20accommodate%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20off%20all%20but%20about%201/4%20cup%20of%20the%20boiling%20water.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EReturn%20the%20steamer%20insert%20with%20the%20oatmeal%20to%20the%20pot%20(top%20with%20frozen%20berries,%20if%20desired)%20and%20cover%20the%20pot.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%20steam%20for%2015%20to%2020%20minutes%20before%20serving,%20adding%20milk%20or%20additional%20toppings%20as%20desired%20to%20your%20bowl.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
