Make way Trisha Yearwood. There’s a new southern kitchen opening on the Food Network. After many weeks of competition on The Next Food Network Star (season 9), Damaris Phillips found herself in the spotlight. Damaris is a culinary school instructor at Jefferson Community & Technical College from Louisville Kentucky. She is the true definition of southern. I can not congratulate her enough for her winning and wonderful representation of “southern cooking and charm”.

,%20Damaris%20Phillips%20found%20herself%20in%20the%20spotlight.%20%20Damaris%20is%20a%20%20culinary%20school%20instructor%20at%20Jefferson%20Community%20&%20Technical%20College%20from%20Louisville%20Kentucky.%20%20%20She%20is%20the%20true%20definition%20of%20southern.%20%20I%20can%20not%20congratulate%20her%20enough%20for%20her%20winning%20and%20wonderful%20representation%20of%20%E2%80%9Csouthern%20cooking%20and%20charm%E2%80%9D.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDamaris%20is%20quirky%20and%20sassy%20and%20100%25%20true%20to%20her%20southern%20roots.%20%20She%20describes%20her%20style%20as%20being%20bright%20and%20fun,%20even%20a%20bit%20old%20fashioned.%20%20Her%20former%20mentors%20on%20the%20show%20describe%20her%20as:%20%E2%80%A6a%20teacher,%20a%20great%20cook,%20a%20good%20communicator,%20lovely%20and%20charming,%E2%80%9D%20said%20Alton%20Brown.%20%20%20Bobby%20Flay%20and%20Giada%20De%20Laurentis,%20both%20admired%20her,%20and%20Bobby%20said%20he%20loved%20that%20Phillips%20was%20from%20the%20south%20and%20%E2%80%9Cshe%E2%80%99s%20got%20all%20the%20right%20pieces.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWell%20we%20are%20going%20to%20get%20to%20see%20all%20those%20southern%20pieces%20put%20together%20on%20October%2027%20%20(10:30am/9:30c)%20when%20her%20show%20%E2%80%9CSouthern%20At%20Heart%E2%80%9D%20premiers%20on%20the%20Food%20Network.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20got%20the%20chance%20to%20ask%20Damaris%20a%20few%20questions%20so%20we%20could%20all%20get%20to%20know%20her%20a%20bit%20more.%20%20I%20hope%20I%20picked%20some%20of%20the%20questions%20y%E2%80%99all%20would%20have%20liked%20to%20ask.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGK:%20%20Damaris.%20Did%20you%20ever%20feel%20like%20giving%20up%20on%20the%20show%20or%20feel%20you%20didn%E2%80%99t%20have%20what%20it%20takes?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDamaris:%20I%20cannot%20imagine%20a%20person%20could%20participate%20in%20a%20competition%20show%20and%20not%20have%20real%20moments%20of%20self-reflection%20and%20even%20doubt.%20Any%20moments%20of%20wanting%20to%20quit%20were%20really%20because%20I%20was%20afraid%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20do%20it%20or%20I%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20good%20enough.%20So%20yes,%20there%20where%20brief%20seconds%20where%20I%20wanted%20to%20quit,%20go%20home,%20hide%20my%20head%20and%20pretend%20that%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20really%20want%20it%20anyway.%20Thankfully%20those%20moments%20were%20very,%20very%20brief.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGK:%20%20What%20was%20the%20hardest%20challenge%20you%20had%20in%20the%20competition?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDamaris:%20Hands%20down,%20the%20first%20one.%20Selling%20yourself%20to%20the%20network%20out%20of%20the%20gate%20was%20beyond%20overwhelming.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGK:%20%20%20Which%20of%20the%20other%20contestants%20do%20you%20feel%20pushed%20you%20the%20hardest%20to%20up%20your%20game?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDamaris:%20I%20will%20be%20forever%20grateful%20for%20Nikki%20Dinki%20and%20Stacey%20Poon%20Kinney.%20Those%20ladies%20were%20so%20remarkable%20and%20encouraging%20and%20talented.%20It%20is%20impossible%20to%20be%20around%20them%20and%20not%20learn.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGK:%20%20%20Which%20of%20the%20mentors%20do%20you%20believe%20was%20the%20hardest%20on%20you%20or%20pushed%20you%20the%20most?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDamaris:%20Well,%20they%20were%20all%20tough%20in%20their%20own%20way.%20I%20am%20going%20to%20have%20to%20go%20with%20Alton%20Brown,%20but%20mainly%20because%20I%20have%20been%20a%20gigantic%20fan%20for%20YEARS%20and%20so%20doing%20poorly%20while%20he%20was%20witness,%20was%20rough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGK:%20%20Thinking%20back%20to%20your%20childhood,%20what%20is%20your%20first%20memory%20of%20food%20that%20made%20you%20fall%20in%20love%20with%20cooking?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDamaris:%20My%20mom%20making%20granola,%20the%20cinnamon%20smell.%20Her%20cooling%20it%20on%20top%20of%20the%20fridge.%20It%20was%20our%20%E2%80%9Csugar%E2%80%9D%20cereal%20growing%20up,%20and%20to%20this%20day%20it%20still%20feels%20extra%20special.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGK:%20%20Who%20was%20your%20biggest%20influence%20on%20cooking%20growing%20up?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDamaris:%20My%20parents.%20Growing%20up%20we%20were%20responsible%20for%20cooking%20for%20the%20family%20one%20night%20a%20week.%20They%20encouraged%20us%20from%20an%20early%20age%20to%20get%20into%20the%20kitchen.%20They%20taught%20us%20how%20to%20%E2%80%9Cuse%20what%20we%20had%E2%80%9D%20to%20make%20substitutions%20and%20foster%20creativity.%20And%20they%20always%20made%20us%20try%20everything,%20so%20we%20learned%20to%20be%20adventurous%20eaters.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGK:%20%20What%20is%20the%20first%20food%20you%20crave%20and%20have%20to%20have%20when%20you%20return%20home%20from%20a%20trip%20away%20from%20Kentucky?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDamaris:%20Banana%20Pudding%E2%80%A6%20it%20is%20really%20difficult%20to%20find%20good%20banana%20pudding%20while%20traveling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGK:%20Have%20you%20ever%20felt%20pressured%20to%20change%20your%20cooking%20style%20away%20from%20southern?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDamaris:%20No%20way.%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20even%20if%20I%20tried.%20The%20food%20I%20cook%20is%20as%20a%20part
