.%20It%20used%20to%20be%20one%20of%20the%20most%20important%20events%20for%20the%20Hokkien%20community%20but%20turns%20quieter%20as%20the%20younger%20generation%20like%20us%20didn't%20bother%20much.%20We%20simple%20just%20follows%20our%20parent%20traditions%20when%20comes%20to%20this%20important%20event.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20mum%20used%20to%20pray%20the%20tian%20gong%20(in%20mandarin)%20in%20non-vegeterian%20style.%20However,%20after%20my%20grand%20mother%20passed%20away,%20she%20converted%20her%20tian%20gong%22%20offering%20into%20vegeterian%20style.%20I%20am%20writing%20this%20to%20remind%20myself%20of%20the%20precedure%20to%20carry%20out%20offering%20for%20'tian%20gong'.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20evening%20before%20the%20prayers%20at%20midnight,%20I%20will%20help%20my%20mum%20setting%20up%20the%20tables%20where%20the%20offerings%20will%20be%20placed.%20The%20table%20will%20be%20placed%20at%20the%20main%20entrance%20of%20our%20house%20with%20the%20sugar%20cane%20stalks%20tied%20to%20each%20side%20of%20the%20table%20leg.%20Followed%20by%20the%20brass%20joss%20sticks%20holders%20with%20a%20red%20ribbon%20tie%20onto%20it%20(Xiang%20Lu%20in%20mandarin)%20placing%20at%20the%20centre%20of%20the%20table%20and%20two%20brass%20candle%20holders%20consist%20of%20big%20red%20candles%20are%20bring%20placed%20at%20the%20side%20of%20the%20table.%20All%20of%20the%20brass%20holders%20had%20been%20polished%20for%20the%20Chinese%20New%20Year%20and%20this%20night.%20Then%203%20cups%20of%20chinese%20tea%20and%20a%20bowl%20containing%20some%20red%20dates%20will%20be%20placed%20in%20fronting%20of%20the%20joss%20sticks%20holders.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20food%20offering%20include%205%20types%20of%20fruits%20placed%20in%20a%20plate%20such%20as%20apples,%20oranges,%20banana,%20grapes%20&%20pears,%20as%20well%20as%2012%20types%20of%20vegetarian%20items%20all%20placed%20in%20a%20small%20bowl%20such%20as%20mushroom,%20fungus,%20vermicelli,%20tou%20kee,%20spinach,%20ang%20ku%20kueh,%20rice%20crackers,%20green%20bean%20cake,%20peanuts%20crackers%20etc.%20Others%20include%20mee%20suan,%20huat%20kueh,%20tien%20kuah%20(nian%20gao%20in%20mandarin),%20pink%20peach%20buns%20and%20pomelo.%20Each%20of%20the%20offerings%20actually%20means%20a%20form%20of%20good%20luck.%20Also,%20red%20round%20paper%20are%20placed%20on%20or%20around%20the%20food%20offerings%20to%20convey%20good%20wishes%20like%20luck,%20prosperous%20and%20success%20to%20the%20family.%20Prior%20the%20ceremony,%20all%20folded%20joss%20papers%20in%20shapes%20of%20ancient%20gold%20and%20silver%20ingots%20with%20different%20sizes%20will%20be%20placed%20underneath%20the%20table%20for%20offering%20to%20the%20god.%20One%20with%20bigger%20size%20is%20know%20as%20the%20Ti-Kong-Kim%20are%20folded%20in%20shape%20of%20gold%20ingots.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20ceremony%20started%20by%20lighting%20up%20the%20big%20red%20candles%20and%20three%20large%20joss%20sticks.%20Then%20the%20family%20members%20beginning%20from%20the%20elderly%20to%20the%20younger%20generation%20will%20pray%20toward%20the%20heaven%20with%20lighted%20joss%20sticks%20(3%20each).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20mum%20will%20throw%20the%20kidney%20shape%20wooden%20blocks%20on%20the%20floors%20so%20called%20'pua-puay'%20to%20see%20if%20the%20god%20had%20happily%20enjoyed%20his%20meal.%20If%20the%20god%20had%20given%20us%20the%20%22green%20light%22,%20then%20we%20will%20proceed%20to%20burn%20the%20prayer%20paraphernalia%20which%20include%20joss%20sticks,%20kim%20jua%20(folded%20joss%20paper)%20and%20and%20the%20suger%20cane%20leaves.%20By%20then,%20it%20will%20be%20around%202am%20in%20the%20morning%20when%20we%20finished%20the%20prayer.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
