Well before I was born—before I was even a thought—I went to Orcas Island. Even my parents, when they were children, took frequent trips to this island where their respective families would camp and fish, crab and hike, play games and swim. Once they met and married, they continued to bring us to the Island—by boat or ferry—and we would stay in a cabin, beach-comb and play board games. We have carried the tradition forward, taking our boys to Orcas year upon year, where they first crawled and now run.

.%20There%20were%20slow%20afternoons%20in%20the%20little%20island%20town%20where%20grandma%20would%20visit%20the%20clothes%20shop%20and%20buy%20fancy%20scarves;%20we%20clocked%20more%20hours%20playing%20card%20games%20than%20I%20care%20to%20count.%20Today%20visiting%20Orcas%20means%20undefined%20time,%20a%20space%20away%20from%20work%20and%20a%20place%20to%20decompress:%20pull%20up%20a%20deck%20chair%20and%20lets%20have%20some%20wine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPerhaps%20because%20I%20grew%20up%20knowing%20this%20as%20holiday,%20or%20perhaps%20because%20I%20have%20had%20busy%20vacations%20of%20scheduled%20site-seeing,%20or%20life%20is%20far%20too%20busy:%20this%20unscheduled%20place%20is%20increasingly%20special.%20No%20doubt%20a%20few%20decades%20from%20now%20I%20will%20close%20my%20eyes%20in%20this%20same%20Orcas%20sun%20and%20remember%20moments%20strewn%20across%20time.%20Perhaps%20I%20will%20remember%20moments%20of%20our%20most%20recent%20visit?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20week%20or%20two%20ago%20we%20scooped%20the%20boys,%20plus%20a%20friend%20and%20our%20French%20exchange%20student%20(Louis)%20early%20from%20school%20and%20headed%20to%20Orcas%20Island%20via%20ferry%20(count%20them:%20four%20teenage%20boys).%20It%20was%20a%20sunny%20weekend%20in%20May%E2%80%94a%20bit%20of%20an%20anomaly%20in%20the%20Pacific%20Northwest.%20We%20arrived%20and%20let%20our%20whims%20lead%20us%20through%20the%20weekend.%20Our%20unplanned%20time%20turned%20into%20a%20hike%20around%20Cascade%20Lake,%20slurping%20oysters%20at%20the%20Farmers%E2%80%99%20Market,%20breaking%20in%20a%20new%20bocci%20ball%20set,%20smores%20and%20wine%20by%20the%20fire%20and%20casual%20rounds%20of%20tennis.%20Highlights:%20running%20into%20my%20friend%20Karista,%20meeting%20new%20friend%20Wendy%20who%20owns%20Chez%20Chloe,%20and%20running%20into%20restauranteur%20and%20cookbook%20author%20Christina%20(who%20belongs%20in%20the%20same%20cohort%20as%20Alice%20Waters).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChristina%20was%20selling%20her%20preserves%20and%20offering%20cooking%20demos%20at%20Saturday%E2%80%99s%20Farmer%20Market.%20When%20I%20realized%20who%20she%20was%20I%20said%20what%20any%20normal%20person%20would%20say:%20Oh%20it%E2%80%99s%20you!%20I%E2%80%99ve%20made%20the%20ketchup%20and%20mustard%20from%20your%20book%E2%80%94they%20were%20great!%20Ha.%20I%20love%20her%20book,%20mostly%20for%20the%20story%20of%20her%20beginnings.%20She%20owned%20Christina%E2%80%99s%20for%20more%20than%2025%20years%20on%20the%20Island,%20and%20still%20today%20they%20host%20Sunday%20night%20Farm%20Dinners%20at%20Red%20Rabbit%20Farm.%20I%20aim%20to%20go%20one%20day%20soon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20more%20years%20than%20I%20can%20remember,%20we%20have%20stayed%20at%20Smugglers%20Villa,%20a%20humble%20gathering%20of%20condos%20half%20a%20mile%E2%80%94and%20a%20lovely%20trail%E2%80%94north%20of%20the%20little%20town%20Eastsound.%20Staying%20there,%20treading%20that%20same%20familiar%20walking%20path,%20walking%20to%20our%20favorite%20bakery%20(Teezers),%20drinking%20espresso%20in%20the%20back%20of%20the%20bookstore%20and%20turning%20rocks%20to%20find%20crab:%20part%20of%20the%20fabric%20of%20my%20life.%20I%20like%20that.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
