.%20I%20caught%20the%20eye%20of%20my%20husband-to-be%20with%20my%20prodigious%20capacity%20for%20whisky,%20and%20an%20entire%20evening%20of%20relentless%20jokes.%20He%20says%20I%20simply%20wore%20down%20his%20defences;%20I%20think%20the%20term%20%22seduced%22%20is%20much%20prettier.%20%20It's%20a%20fine%20line.%20I%20love%20clever%20jokes%20that%20play%20on%20words;%20I%20love%20witty%20one-liners;%20I%20love%20long%20and%20complicated%20jokes%20with%20groan-inducing%20punchlines;%20and%20I%20love%20risque,%20consenting-adults-only%20jokes.%20%20But%20the%20one%20thing%20I%20have%20never%20had%20a%20huge%20store%20of%20is%20clean,%20kid-friendly%20jokes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20realised%20this%20recently%20when%20I%20was%20back%20home%20in%20South%20Africa%20attempting%20to%20entertain%20my%20two%20young%20nephews%20and%20realised%20that%20practically%20none%20of%20the%20jokes%20that%20I%20know%20are%20suitable%20for%20them.%20%20They%20either%20involve%20some%20sort%20of%20swear%20word;%20or%20some%20sort%20of%20sexual%20innuendo%20(possibly%20involving%20pigs!);%20or%20involve%20some%20sort%20of%20situational%20comedy%20that%20is%20simply%20too%20adult%20for%20a%205-year%20old%20and%20a%209-year%20old%20to%20understand.%20I%20tried%20a%20few%20knock-knock%20jokes,%20but%20this%20usually%20results%20in%20my%20younger%20nephew%20clamouring%20to%20make%20up%20and%20tell%20his%20own%20knock-knock%20jokes,%20which%20usually%20run%20along%20the%20lines%20of:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKnock,%20knock!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWho's%20there?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20who?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20think%20you%20smell%20like%20a%20monkey!%20HAHAHAHAHA!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHmmm,%20well,%20yes.%20%20Some%20work%20needed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20I%20have%20been%20on%20a%20mission%20to%20collect%20a%20few%20short,%20clean%20jokes%20before%20my%20next%20visit%20to%20South%20Africa%20to%20speak%20at%20the%20South%20African%20Food%20&%20Wine%20Blogger%20Indaba%20in%20Cape%20Town%20in%20June.%20Some%20of%20my%20favourite%20discoveries%20so%20far%20include:%20What%20do%20you%20get%20if%20you%20cross%20a%20sheepdog%20with%20a%20rose?%20A%20collie-flower!%20Or%20what%20is%20the%20cat's%20favorite%20TV%20show?%20The%20evening%20mews!%20Or%20maybe%20what%20flies%20around%20your%20light%20at%20night%20and%20can%20bite%20off%20your%20head?%20A%20tiger%20moth!%20Or%20why%20was%20the%20centipede%20dropped%20from%20the%20insect%20football%20team?%20Because%20he%20took%20too%20long%20to%20put%20his%20boots%20on!%20But%20probably%20one%20of%20my%20favourites,%20and%20one%20I've%20known%20since%20I%20was%20little%20is%20this:%20When%20is%20a%20door%20not%20a%20door?%20%20When%20it's%20ajar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20reminded%20of%20this%20the%20other%20day%20when%20I%20set%20out%20to%20make%20shortbread%20for%20a%20relaxed%20lunch%20with%20a%20couple%20of%20other%20bloggers%20two%20weekends%20ago.%20%20As%20usual,%20I%20had%20ridiculously%20overbooked%20myself%20for%20the%20weekend:%20a%20dinner%20out%20on%20Friday%20night,%20followed%20by%20a%20review%20meal%20on%20Saturday%20lunch,%20from%20where%20I%20went%20directly%20to%20a%20friend's%20barbecue;%20and%20then%20Sunday%20morning%20to%20do%20the%20grocery%20shopping%20and%20bake,%20before%20heading%20off%20for%20the%20lunch.%20%20The%20theme%20for%20the%20lunch%20was%20Ottoman%20and%20I%20looked%20at%20a%20few%20Turkish%20shortbread%20recipes,%20before%20deciding%20to%20do%20my%20own%20take%20on%20these%20by%20adding%20pine%20nuts%20and%20the%20delicious%20Nielsen-Massey%20orange%20extract%20that%20I%20received%20in%20my%20Plate%20to%20Page%20goodie%20bag%20in%20Tuscany.%20%20I%20also%20decided%20simultaneously%20to%20halve%20the%20recipe%20amounts,%20convert%20from%20cup%20measures%20to%20grams,%20and%20figure%20out%20what%20the%20hell%20%22%20a%20cup%20of%20butter%22%20really%20means.%20%20Frankly,%20you%20can%20already%20see%20disaster%20looming,%20can't%20you?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20question%20that%20sprang%20to%20mind%20when%20these%20cookie%20came%20out%20of%20the%20oven%20was:%20%20when%20is%20a%20shortbread%20cookie%20not%20a%20shortbread%20cookie?%20Mostly%20when%20the%20baker%20overestimates%20her%20own%20prowess%20as%20a%20conversion%20calculator,%20tries%20to%20do%20too%20many%20things%20at%20once,%20and%20adds%20waaaaay%20to%20much%20sugar%20and%20butter%20to%20the%20mix.%20%20Within%20about%2060%20seconds%20of%20putting%20these%20in%20the%20oven,%20I%20knew%20I%20was%20in%20trouble%20as%20the%20neat%20balls%20slumped%20into%20large%20thin%20discs.%20%20Still,%20I%20persevered,%20reasoning%20that%20the%20end%20result%20could%20not%20be%20THAT%20bad,%20given%20the%20delicious%20ingredients.%20%20It%20was%20a%20gamble%20that%20paid%20off.%20%20These%20cookies%20can't%20in%20any%20shape,%20manner%20or%20form%20be%20described%20as%20shortbread;%20they%20are%20more%20like%20the%20love-child%20of%20a%20brandy%20snap%20and%20a%20tuille.%20%20They%20are%20light%20and%20thin%20with%20a%20tangy%20orange%20flavour,%20a%20nutty%20hint%20from%20the%20pine%20nuts,%20and%20a%20pleasing%20snap%20as%20you%20bite%20them.%20%20Perfect%20for%20afternoon%20tea,%20or%20for%20enjoying%20cantucci-style%20with%20a%20glass%20of%20sweet%20wine%20at%20the%20end%20of%20an%20Ottoman%20feast%20with%20good%20friends%20-%20and%20that's%20no%20joke.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EORANGE%20AND%20PINE%20NUT%20COOKIES%20(makes%20about%2020)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20160C.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20medium%20sized%20mixing%20bowl,%20cream%20together%20half%20of%20the%20icing%20sugar,%20the%20butter%20and%20the%20orange%20essence.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESift%20the%20flour%20and%20the%20baking%20powder%20together,%20then%20slowly%20add%20to%20the%20creamed%20butter.%20Mix%20well%20with%20a%20wooden%20spoon%20until%20all%20ingredients%20are%20moistened%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELine%20a%20cookie%20sheet%20of%20baking%20tray%20with%20baking%20parchment,%20then%20roll%20one%20teaspoonful%20of%20the%20dough%20at%20a%20time%20into%20balls.%20Place%20the%20balls%20on%20a%20baking%20tray,%20leaving%20room%20between%20the%20balls%20for%20expansion.%20%20Lightly%20press%20a%20pine%20nut%20into%20the%20top%20of%20each%20ball%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBake%20for%2015-20%20minutes%20-%20the%20cookies%20should%20be%20starting%20to%20turn%20a%20light%20golden%20colour%20-%20do%20not%20overcook!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDust%20the%20shortbread%20straight%20from%20the%20oven%20with%20the%20remaining%20sieved%20icing%20sugar%20and%20allow%20to%20cool%20completely%20on%20a%20cooling%20rack.%20%20These%20cookies%20are%20wonderful%20as%20an%20accompaniment%20to%20coffee,%20ice-cream,%20or%20dessert%20wine.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
