.%20I%20will%20be%20taking%20a%20blogging%20hiatus%20from%20the%209th-18th,%20but%20will%20be%20back%20in%20fightin'%20form%20in%20time%20for%20the%20Foodportunity%20Event%20in%20Seattle%20on%20the%2022nd%20--%20so%20looking%20forward%20to%20seeing%20so%20many%20of%20you%20again,%20and%20meeting%20new%20foodies!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20for%20this%20short%20hiatus,%20I%20will%20be%20bringing%20my%20camera%20and%20hope%20to%20post%20periodic%20travel%20notes%20via%20Twitter,%20so%20feel%20free%20to%20follow%20my%20journey%20via%20@WasabiPrime.%20I'll%20be%20visiting%20my%20dear%20Mama%20and%20Papa%20Wasabi%20in%20Hilo,%20on%20the%20Big%20Island,%20aka,%20ground%20zero%20for%20the%20most%20thankfully%20uneventful%20recent%20tsunami%20warning%20(whew!).%20Am%20hoping%20to%20capture%20a%20Slippahz-and-Spam-Musubi%20kind%20of%20visit,%20versus%20the%20sandy%20beaches%20and%20fruity%20drink%20experience,%20as%20my%20memories%20of%20this%20place%20are%20very%20personal%20and%20rather%20om-nommy.%20To%20celebrate%20this%20vision%20of%20a%20down-home%20tropical%20paradise,%20I%20leave%20you%20with%20an%20Aloha%20Plenty%20Bread%20Pudding,%20with%20Spam%20and%20Portuguese%20Sausage.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHoh,%20dis%20buggaz%20stay%20ono%20kine%20to%20da%20max!%20-%20Photo%20by%20Wasabi%20Prime%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20by%20no%20means%20a%20traditional%20local%20dish,%20but%20it%20combines%20a%20lot%20of%20local%20favorites%20that%20I%20thought%20would%20go%20well%20together:%20Portuguese%20sausage%20(linguica),%20King's%20Hawaiian%20sweet%20bread,%20scallions,%20and%20the%20champagne%20of%20mystery%20meats,%20Spam%20(insert%20Dramatic%20Chipmunk%20music%20here).%20Or%20as%20my%20mother%20calls%20it,%20Spare%20Parts,%20All%20Meat.%20I%20know%20that's%20not%20what%20Hormel's%20original%20intent%20was,%20but%20damn%20it%20all%20if%20my%20mom's%20version%20isn't%20funnier.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20wasn't%20sure%20if%20the%20sweetness%20of%20the%20bread%20would%20add%20too%20much%20of%20a%20sugary%20flavor,%20but%20once%20it's%20toasted%20and%20then%20cooked%20as%20a%20savory%20pudding,%20the%20other%20flavors%20reign%20supreme%20over%20any%20lingering%20sweetness%20from%20the%20bread.%20I%20used%20the%20pre-packaged%20rolls%20because%20that%20seems%20to%20be%20more%20prevalent%20than%20the%20old-school%20round%20loaves%20of%20King's%20Hawaiian.%20It's%20a%20delicious%20bread%20to%20eat%20on%20its%20own,%20with%20just%20a%20bit%20of%20softened%20butter%20on%20a%20slice%20of%20its%20spongey,%20soft%20brioche-like%20texture.%20I%20remember%20many%20mornings%20just%20having%20a%20giant%20slice%20of%20sweet%20bread%20and%20a%20bit%20of%20margarine%20over%20it,%20because%20I%20was%20too%20impatient%20to%20wait%20for%20the%20butter%20to%20become%20spreadable.%20Because%20of%20its%20soft,%20moist%20texture,%20for%20a%20bread%20pudding,%20it's%20good%20to%20perform%20the%20extra%20step%20of%20toasting%20the%20cubes%20of%20bread%20first%20so%20that%20it%20can%20absorb%20the%20liquid%20custard%20that%20will%20eventually%20bind%20all%20the%20ingredients%20together.%20The%20resulting%20savory%20bread%20pudding%20is%20a%20hearty%20slice%20of%20Island%20delight%20that%20reflects%20the%20unique%20mix%20of%20cultures%20and%20unfussy%20food%20resourcefulness%20that%20is%20very%20much%20a%20part%20of%20Hawaiian%20life.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20want%20to%20read%20some%20previous%20posts%20about%20my%20last%20trip%20to%20Da%20Islands,%20you%20can%20read%20a%20two-part%20Mixed%20Plate%20post,%20titled%20Ono%20Kine%20Hawaii:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGreen%20Acres%20(pt%201)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIsland%20Grindz%20is%20da%20Bes'%20Kinez%20(pt%202)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20also%20created%20a%20twist%20on%20the%20popular%20Hawaiian%20pizza,%20using%20dried%20spiced%20pineapple%20and%20Black%20Forest%20ham,%20even%20though%20I%20got%20razzed%20by%20family%20saying%20%22yo,%20I'm%20sick%20of%20foods%20with%20pineapple%20thrown%20on%20it%20and%20'Hawaiian'%20slapped%20on%20the%20name.%22%20Razz%20all%20you%20want%20-%20the%20pizza%20was%20ono.%20Read%20Fantasy%20Island%20Pizza%20%3E%3E%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you're%20looking%20to%20be%20foodie-gangstah,%20go%20ahead%20and%20make%20up%20a%20platter%20of%20Spam%20Musubi.%20I%20made%20up%20a%20batch%20to%20celebrate%20Hawaii's%2050th%20anniversary%20for%20statehood,%20with%20little%20flags!%20Don't%20knock%20it%20till%20you%20try%20it%20--%20it's%20onolicious%20to%20the%20tenth%20power.%20And%20your%20blood%20sugar%20will%20absolutely%20freak%20out%20from%20all%20the%20white%20rice.%20Read%20Statehood%20Spam%20Musubi%20Post%20%3E%3E%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAloha%20Plenty%20Bread%20Pudding%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20350%20degrees%20Fahrenheit.%20Place%20cubes%20of%20sweet%20bread%20onto%20a%20baking%20sheet%20and%20toast%20lightly%20in%20the%20oven%20for%2010-15%20minutes,%20or%20until%20slightly%20browned%20and%20most%20of%20the%20moisture%20removed.They%20should%20feel%20like%20large%20croutons.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETake%20a%20large%20skillet%20and%20place%20on%20burner%20set%20to%20medium-high%20heat.%20Cook%20down%20the%20slices%20and%20cubes%20of%20Spam%20and%20Portuguese%20sausage%20until%20they%20are%20browned.%20Remove%20and%20discard%20extra%20oil%20if%20desired.%20Toss%20the%20cooked%20meat%20and%20toasted%20bread%20cubes%20in%20a%20bowl%20until%20incorporated.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELightly%20whisk%20two%20eggs%20with%20the%20milk%20in%20a%20small%20bowl.%20Drizzle%20over%20the%20bread%20and%20meat%20mixture,%20tossing%20ingredients%20until%20the%20bread%20has%20soaked%20up%20the%20milk%20and%20egg%20custard.%20Add%20the%20green%20onions%20and%20mix%20until%20incorporated.%20Lightly%20grease%20a%20casserole%20dish%20with%20butter%20or%20oil,%20and%20pour%20mixture%20in,%20spreading%20evenly%20along%20the%20bottom.%20Place%20dish%20into%20the%20preheated%20oven%20still%20at%20350%20degrees%20and%20bake%20for%2020-25%20minutes%20or%20until%20the%20custard%20has%20set%20and%20the%20top%20is%20browned.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%20bread%20pudding%20rest%20for%20a%20few%20minutes%20after%20removing%20from%20the%20oven,%20slice%20pieces%20and%20serve.%20Optional,%20sprinkle%20with%20toasted/crushed%20macadamia%20nuts%20and%20a%20drizzle%20of%20Tabasco%20sauce%20for%20onolicious%20fun.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWill%20blog-atcha%20soon!%20Mahalo%20Plenty!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMystery%20Meat%20with%20Bread%20That's%20Sweet!%20-%20Photos%20by%20Wasabi%20Prime%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
