.%20Sure,%20I%20might%20be%20like%20the%20Heinz%2057%20pups;%20mostly%20German%20but%20with%20some%20English%20and%20Irish%20thrown%20into%20the%20mix%20but%20in%20my%20heart?%20I%E2%80%99m%20Italian.%20My%20first%20food%20group.%20The%20cuisine%20that%20really%20got%20me%20excited%20about%20cooking%20even%20if%20what%20I%20thought%20was%20wonderful%20Italian%20food%20was%20a%20bit%20less%20than%20the%20real%20deal.%20But%20still;%20it%E2%80%99s%20food%20that%20I%20love%20and%20I%20just%20know%20that%20the%20first%20time%20I%20step%20foot%20on%20Italian%20soil%20that%20I%20will%20never%20want%20to%20return.%20The%20land,%20the%20wine,%20the%20outgoing%20people%E2%80%A6we%20would%20all%20work%20out%20very%20well%20together,%20I%20just%20know%20it.%20That%20I%20love%20Limoncello%20with%20a%20passion%20too?%20Well%20here%E2%80%99s%20proof%20in%20this%20light%20and%20lovely%20Limoncello%20Sorbet;%20serving%20as%20the%20palate%20cleanser%20for%20our%20feast.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20feast%20is%20not%20really%20called%20such%20in%20Italy;%20it%E2%80%99s%20certainly%20not%20a%20holiday%20and%20as%20important%20as%20it%20is%20for%20some,%20it%E2%80%99s%20apparently%20a%20tradition%20that%20exists%20only%20in%20a%20few%20southern%20regions%20where%20it%20is%20known%20as%20The%20Vigil%20(La%20Vigilia).%20Here%20in%20the%20USA,%20land%20of%20excess%20abounds,%20some%20Italian-American%20families%20have%20been%20known%20to%20celebrate%20with%20nine,%20eleven%20or%20thirteen%20different%20seafood%20dishes.%20This%20celebration%20commemorates%20the%20wait,%20the%20Vigilia%20di%20Natale,%20for%20the%20midnight%20birth%20of%20the%20baby%20Jesus.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20long%20tradition%20of%20eating%20seafood%20on%20Christmas%20Eve%20dates%20from%20the%20Roman%20Catholic%20tradition%20of%20abstinence.%20In%20this%20case,%20refraining%20from%20the%20consumption%20of%20meat%20or%20milk%20products%20%E2%80%93%20on%20Wednesdays,%20Fridays%20and%20(in%20the%20Latin%20Church)%20Saturdays,%20as%20well%20as%20during%20Lent%20and%20on%20the%20eve%20of%20specific%20holy%20days.%20As%20no%20meat%20or%20animal%20fat%20(there%20is%20no%20prohibition%20on%20milk%20or%20dairy%20products)%20could%20be%20used%20on%20such%20days,%20observant%20Catholics%20would%20instead%20eat%20fish,%20typically%20fried%20in%20oil.%20My%20family%20was%20observant%20Catholics%20and%20can%20I%20just%20say%20I%20was%20OK%20when%20the%20no%20meat%20on%20Friday%20ban%20was%20lifted.%20Fish%20Sticks.%20Tuna%20Fish%20Salad.%20That%20was%20the%20rotation.%20Period.%20HAMBURGERS?%20Yes!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20meal%20may%20include%20seven,%20eight,%20or%20even%20nine%20specific%20fishes%20that%20are%20considered%20traditional.%20The%20most%20famous%20dish%20Southern%20Italians%20are%20known%20for%20is%20baccal%C3%A0%20(salted%20cod%20fish).%20The%20custom%20of%20celebrating%20with%20a%20simple%20fish%20such%20as%20baccal%C3%A0%20is%20attributed%20to%20the%20greatly%20impoverished%20regions%20of%20Southern%20Italy.%20Fried%20smelts,%20calamari%20and%20other%20types%20of%20seafood%20have%20been%20incorporated%20into%20the%20Christmas%20Eve%20dinner%20over%20the%20years.%20For%20our%20feast%20we%E2%80%99ve%20also%20included%20some%20side%20dishes,%20a%20palate%20cleanser,%20dessert%20and%20a%20cocktail.%20Lots%20to%20choose%20from!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20knew%20right%20away%20I%20wanted%20to%20make%20a%20Limoncello%20Sorbet.%20Maybe%20because%20selfishly%20I,%201.%20Love%20Limoncello%20and%202.%20Knew%20it%20would%20be%20good%20year%20round,%20not%20just%20over%20the%20holidays.%20Perfect%20right?%20I%20fell%20head%20over%20heals%20in%20love%20with%20Limoncello%20on%20a%20trip%20to%20Boston%20almost%2015%20years%20ago%20and%20the%20love%20has%20never%20waned.%20I%E2%80%99ve%20even%20made%20my%20own%20but%20this%20year,%20I%20made%20some%20cranberry%20liqueur%20for%20holiday%20gifts%20so%20used%20a%20bottle%20I%20had%20on%20hand%20that%20is%20one%20of%20my%20favorites.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESuch%20an%20easy%20dish%20and%20while%20we%E2%80%99ve%20used%20it%20as%20a%20palate%20cleanser%20it%E2%80%99s%20a%20great%20summer%20dessert%20too;%20so%20light%20and%20refreshing%20with%20fresh%20lemon%20juice%20and%20grated%20rind%20mixed%20with%20sugar%20and%20water.%20Simple%20right?%20And%20so%20good.%20One%20of%20my%20neighbors%20stopped%20by%20the%20other%20night%20with%20his%202%20year%20old%20in%20his%20arms%20to%20give%20me%20some%20mail%20that%20had%20mistakenly%20been%20put%20into%20their%20mailbox.%20I%20was%20sharing%20goodies%20with%20my%20friend%20from%20across%20the%20street%20and%20asked%20if%20he%20would%20take%20some%20cake%20and%20sorbet%20home%20too.%20While%20we%20chatted%20his%20little%20girl%20wanted%20a%20taste%20of%20the%20sorbet.%20She%20went%20nuts%E2%80%A6more%20DaDa,%20more!%20It%20took%20me%20a%20minute%E2%80%A6oops,%20WAIT?%20There%20is%20liqueur%20in%20there!%20He%20laughed%20and%20said%20no%20worries%E2%80%A6his%20hope%20was%20that%20she%20would%20sleep%20well%20that%20night.%20:)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBe%20sure%20to%20check%20out%20what%20my%20friends%20have%20made%20after%20the%20recipe%E2%80%A6maybe%20it%E2%80%99s%20time%20to%20plan%20your%20own%20feast%E2%80%A6you%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20to%20be%20Italian%20either!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20saucepan,%20combine%20the%20sugar%20and%202%20cups%20water.%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil%20over%20medium-high%20heat,%20stirring%20occasionally%20until%20the%20sugar%20is%20completely%20dissolved%20and%20a%20syrup%20has%20formed,%20about%205%20minutes.%20Let%20the%20syrup%20cool%20to%20room%20temperature.%20Pour%20the%20syrup%20into%20a%20bowl%20and%20stir%20in%20the%20lemon%20zest%20and%20juice,%20salt%20and%20Limoncello.%20Cover%20and%20refrigerate%20until%20very%20cold,%20at%20least%202%20hours%20or%20up%20to%201%20day.%20Pour%20the%20cold%20lemon%20mixture%20into%20an%20ice%20cream%20maker%20and%20churn%20according%20to%20the%20manufacturer%E2%80%99s%20instructions.%20Cover%20tightly%20and%20freeze%20until%20firm,%20at%20least%202%20hours%20or%20up%20to%203%20days.%20%20%20Notes%20This%20took%20longer%20than%20ice%20cream%20to%20freeze%20up%20due%20to%20the%20amount%20of%20alcohol%20in%20the%20mix.%20Be%20patient,%20it%20will%20get%20there!%20%203.5.3208%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Feast%20of%20the%20Seven%20Fishes%20was%20brought%20to%20America%20from%20Southern%20Italy%20where%20it%20is%20all%20now%20but%20forgotten,%20the%20Feast%20of%20the%20Seven%20Fishes%20is%20a%20meal%20eaten%20by%20Italian-Americans%20that%20features%20(at%20least)%20seven%20fish/seafood%20dishes.%20Along%20with%20our%20hosts,%20Heather%20from%20All%20Roads%20Lead%20to%20the%20Kitchen%20and%20Lora%20from%20Savoring%20Italy,%20I%E2%80%99ve%20joined%20forces%20with%20several%20bloggers%20to%20share%20menu%20ideas%20for%20your%20Seven%20Fishes%20feast.%20Along%20with%20the%20traditional%20seven%20fish%20and%20seafood%20dishes,%20we%E2%80%99ve%20included%20some%20side%20dishes,%20a%20palate%20cleanser,%20a%20dessert,%20and%20a%20cocktail.%20Enjoy%20and%20Saluti!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAppetizer%20and%20Main%20Courses%20with%20Fish%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESide%20Dishes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPalate%20Cleanser%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDessert%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECocktail%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
