%20and%20I%20moved%20between%20air-conditioned%20coffee%20houses%20and%20restaurants%20to%20keep%20cool.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20dinner,%20we%20duked%20into%20our%20favorite%20casual%20French%20restaurant%20in%20SOHO.%20The%20escapes%20me,%20but%20the%20warm%20lighting,%20steak%20au%20poivre%20and%20steak%20frites%20sit%20comfortably%20in%20my%20memory.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20it%E2%80%99s%20not%20the%20ambiance%20or%20steak%20au%20poivre,%20but%20rather%20what%20happened%20afterwards,%20that%20stays%20in%20my%20mind.%20A%20dimly%20lit%20bar,%20a%20glass%20of%20wine%E2%80%A6all%20leading%20to%20that%20moment%20when%20we%20told%20each%20other%20for%20the%20first%20time%20that%20we%20loved%20each%20other.%20It%20didn%E2%80%99t%20matter%20that%20we%20had%20been%20dating%20for%20just%20a%20few%20weeks%E2%80%A6we%20just%20knew.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20meal%20takes%20me%20right%20back%20to%20those%20days.%20Steak%20au%20poivre%20is%20typically%20made%20with%20filet%20mignon,%20but%20I%20opted%20for%20cheaper%20rib%20eyes%20in%20this%20recipe.%20We%20don%E2%80%99t%20eat%20a%20lot%20of%20red%20meat%20and%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20sure%20that%20our%20stomachs%20could%20take%20a%20larger,%20thicker%20portion.%20Besides,%20the%20rib%20eyes%20were%20on%20sale%20at%20the%20supermarket.%20Bonus!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20sauce,%20the%20traditional%20ingredients%20are%20Cognac%20and%20heavy%20cream.%20But%20you%20know%20me%20%E2%80%93%20I%20like%20to%20keep%20things%20light,%20so%20I%20opted%20for%20a%20splash%20of%20half-and-half%20instead%20of%20the%20cream.%20I%20considered%20using%20fat-free%20half-and-half%20until%20I%20realized%20that%20it%20contains%20corn%20syrup.%20So,%20even%20if%20this%20isn%E2%80%99t%20the%20healthiest%20meal%20to%20eat%20on%20a%20regular%20basis,%20life%20is%20about%20moderation%20and%20this%20is%20great%20for%20an%20indulgence%20once%20in%20a%20while.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECognac%20is%20a%20type%20of%20brandy%20that%20meets%20certain%20regulatory%20requirements,%20such%20as%20being%20made%20from%20certain%20grapes%20grown%20in%20the%20region%20of%20Cognac%20and%20being%20aged%20in%20specific%20French%20oak%20barrels.%20There%20is%20a%20taste%20(and%20price!)%20difference%20between%20the%20two,%20but%20brandy%20will%20work%20well%20in%20this%20recipe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELook%20at%20me,%20saving%20you%20money%20all%20over%20the%20place!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20served%20the%20steaks%20on%20our%20beautiful%20QSquared%20NYC%20plates.%20The%20colors%20and%20pattern%20of%20their%20new%20Talavera%20Collection%20are%20stunning.%20The%20steaks%20were%20made%20to%20be%20sitting%20on%20these%20vibrant%20plates!%20And%20that%E2%80%99s%20very%20good%20news,%20so%20I%20plan%20to%20use%20these%20BPA-free%20melamine%20plates%20(that%E2%80%99s%20right%E2%80%A6unbreakable!)%20plenty%20of%20times%20during%20the%20summer%20when%20we%E2%80%99re%20grilling.%20Their%20other%20new%20collections,%20Hampton%20Toile%20and%20Cambridge%20Rose%20would%20be%20great%20for%20entertaining,%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20you%20will%20be%20adding%20alcohol%20to%20a%20very%20hot%20pan,%20be%20sure%20to%20remove%20the%20pan%20from%20the%20heat%20source%20when%20pouring%20in%20the%20brandy.%20Nothing%20ruins%20a%20meal%20more%20than%20singed%20eyebrows%20or%20a%20kitchen%20fire.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20sauce%20comes%20together%20in%20a%20flash,%20so%20be%20sure%20that%20the%20rest%20of%20your%20meal%20is%20ready%20before%20making%20the%20sauce.%20Otherwise,%20the%20sauce%20will%20start%20to%20thicken%20(and%20not%20in%20a%20good%20way)%20in%20the%20pan.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20recipe%20is%20for%20two%20%E2%80%93%20think%20Valentine%E2%80%99s%20Day%20or%20an%20anniversary%20%E2%80%93%20but%20can%20easily%20be%20doubled.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20want%20to%20learn%20more%20about%20QSquared%20NYC%20and%20see%20some%20of%20their%20amazing%20collections%20of%20dishes%20(plenty%20of%20different%20patterns),%20check%20out%20their%20site,%20or%20follow%20them%20on%20Facebook,%20Pinterest%20or%20Instagram.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOther%20healthy%20romantic%20dishes:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2%20(4%20oz.%20each)%20boneless,%20trimmed%20ribeye%20steaks%20%C2%BD%20tsp%20kosher%20salt,%20divided%201%20tbsp%20crushed%20peppercorns%203%20tsp%20olive%20oil,%20divided%20%C2%BD%20shallot,%20minced%203%20tbsp%20Brandy%20%E2%85%93%20cup%20half-and-half%202%20tbsp%20minced%20flat-leaf%20parsley%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20steaks%20on%20a%20cutting%20board%20and%20press%20%C2%BC%20teaspoon%20of%20the%20salt%20and%20the%20crushed%20peppercorns%20into%20the%20steak%20(on%20both%20sides).%20Heat%202%20teaspoons%20olive%20oil%20in%20a%20large%20cast-iron%20skillet.%20Add%20the%20steaks%20and%20cook%20until%20done%20to%20the%20desired%20degree,%20about%202%20minutes%20per%20side%20for%20rare.%20Transfer%20the%20steaks%20to%20a%20cut%20board%20and%20let%20rest.%20Reduce%20the%20heat%20to%20medium%20and%20add%20the%20remaining%201%20teaspoon%20olive%20oil%20to%20the%20skillet.%20Saute%20the%20shallots%20for%2030%20seconds.
