%2021%20days.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo%20one%20in%20their%20right%20mind%20would%20carry%2021%20days%20worth%20of%20food.%20First%20%E2%80%93%20it%E2%80%99s%20heavy%20%E2%80%93%20and%20remember,%20I%20cut%20out%20something%20that%20weighed%20an%20ounce.%20But%20second,%20and%20probably%20even%20more%20importantly,%20you%20really%20can%E2%80%99t.%20Most%20areas%20of%20the%20John%20Muir%20Trail%20require%20carrying%20of%20a%20%E2%80%98bear%20canister%E2%80%99.%20They%20are%20virtually%20impossible%20for%20naughty%20hungry%20bears%20to%20open,%20even%20though%20they%20are%20certainly%20NOT%20scent-proof.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20a%20typical%20bear%20canister:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20aren%E2%80%99t%20small,%20as%20you%20can%20see.%20They%20weight%20about%202-3%20pounds%20themselves,%20depending%20on%20the%20brand%20and%20should%20carry%20about%204-5%20days%20of%20food%20for%201%20person,%20of%20course%20depending%20on%20density/volume/number%20of%20snacks/booze/etc.%20But%20note:%20NOT%2021%20DAYS.%20Eventually,%20using%20them%20becomes%20really%20easy,%20as%20does%20getting%20it%20in%20and%20out%20of%20your%20backpack.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20not%20being%20able%20to%20carry%20all%20the%20food%20at%20once%20means%20you%20have%20to%20do%20something%20called%20%E2%80%9Cresupply%E2%80%9D:%20you%20have%20to%20plan%20out%20stops%20along%20the%20trail%20so%20that%20you%20can%20pick%20up%20food%20and%20restock.%20The%20first%20half%20of%20the%20trail%20has%20more%20options,%20like%20in%20Yosemite%20and%20the%20%E2%80%98resort%E2%80%99%20where%20we%20are%20staying;%20the%20last%20half%20of%20the%20JMT%20has%20fewer%20options.%20Some%20people%20simply%20resupply%20by%20buying%20food%20at%20the%20stores%20that%20are%20along%20the%20trail%20(usually%20not%20on%20the%20trail,%20but%20off%20by%20.5%20miles%20or%20so).%20Others,%20like%20us,%20mail%20boxes%20or%20buckets%20to%20those%20locations%20that%20are%20held%20(for%20a%20fee;%20ain%E2%80%99t%20nothin%E2%80%99%20free!)%20until%20we%20arrive.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJennifer%20and%20I%20ultimately%20decided%20to%20resupply%203%20times,%20so%20once%20we%20figured%20that%20out,%20we%20each%20had%20our%20own%20methods%20to%20organize.%20For%20me,%20I%20was%20lucky%20enough%20to%20have%20a%20spare%20bookcase%20in%20which%20to%20put%20labels,%20as%20you%20see%20here:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20you%20can%20probably%20read,%20we%20are%20starting%20the%20trail%20carrying%203%20days%20of%20food.%20We%20resupply%20at%20a%20place%20called%20Tuolumne%20Meadows%20(in%20Yosemite),%20where%20we%20will%20pick%20up%20a%20box%20that%20contains%20our%20food%20and%20snacks%20for%20Days%204-8.%20Jennifer%20packed%20the%20snacks%20for%20this%20leg%20earlier%20than%20others,%20so%20that%20I%20could%20bring%20them%20back%20to%20SF%20when%20I%20was%20visiting%20in%20Seattle%20over%20July%204th.%20This%20helped%20to%20decrease%20cost%20of%20shipping%20since%20we%20only%20sent%201%20box%20to%20this%20location.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%20is%20the%20box:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPacked%20and%20ready%20to%20go%20%E2%80%93%20we%20sent%20this%20one%20off%20first,%20since%20we%20are%20getting%20to%20this%20location%20earlier%20in%20the%20trip.%20Delivery%20confirmation%20showed%20it%20as%20being%20at%20the%20Tuolumne%20Meadows%20post%20office,%20so%20we%20should%20be%20good%20to%20go%20on%20this%20one!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20second%20resupply%20is%20a%20bit%20trickier,%20and%20bigger.%20We%20are%20staying%20at%20a%20place%20called%20Vermilion%20Valley%20Resort%20to%20relax%20on%20our%209th%20day%20of%20the%20trip.%20We%20have%20no%20miles%20planned%20and%20a%20reservation%20for%20a%20real%20bed,%20a%20shower%20(!),%20and%20laundry.%20This%20place%20will%20also%20have%20magical%20things%20like%20sandwiches,%20beer,%20and%20BBQ.%20It%E2%80%99s%20going%20to%20feel%20good%20for%20that%201%20little%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat%20said%20though,%20once%20we%20leave%20VVR,%20we%20have%20to%20carry%208%20days%20worth%20of%20food.%20Remember%20how%20I%20said%20the%20bear%20cans%20only%20held%20around%204-5%20days%20worth%20of%20food?%20Yeah,%20that%E2%80%99s%20right%20%E2%80%93%20but%20luckily,%20bear%20cans%20aren%E2%80%99t%20required%20along%20the%20beginning%20of%20that%208%20day%20section,%20so%20we%E2%80%99ll%20be%20able%20to%20whittle%20down%20our%20food%20supply%20and%20eventually%20get%20it%20all%20back%20into%20the%20bear%20can%20by%20the%20time%20we%20have%20to.%20Don%E2%80%99t%20worry%20%E2%80%93%20no%20bear%20attacks%20will%20be%20had%20here%20%E2%80%93%20that%E2%80%99s%20one%20part%20of%20this%20trip%20that%20we%E2%80%99re%20totally%20prepared%20for.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20you%20see%20below,%20for%20my%20VVR%20bucket,%20I%20have%20all%20of%20mine%20and%20Jennifer%E2%80%99s%20meals%20laid%20out%20for%20those%208%20days,%20and%20also%20a%20few%20replacement%20toiletries,%20like%20wipes%20and%20sunscreen,%20and%20even%20a%20fresh%20pair%20of%20clothes%20to%20wear%20while%20my%20dirty%20dirty%20laundry%20is%20being%20washed%20(these%20clothes%20will%20be%20tossed%20before%20we%20leave).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EVVR%20recommends%20shipping%20in%20a%20bucket,%20so%20that%E2%80%99s%20what%20you%20see%20here%20%E2%80%93%20a%205%20gallon%20bucket%20that%20is%20literally%20filled%20to%20the%20brim%20with%20our%20supplies%20(the%20picture%20shows%20it%20halfway%20full,%20but%20don%E2%80%99t%20you%20worry%20%E2%80%93%20it%20was%20to%20the%20top%20when%20it%20went%20out):%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20got%20shipped%20out%20last%20week,%20and%20has%20also%20been%20confirmed%20as%20arrived%20at%20VVR:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20after%20that,%20we%20have%204%20more%20days%20to%20go,%20and%20this%20is%20the%20section%20where%20the%20resupply%20options%20are%20few%20and%20far%20between.%20Most%20require%20you%20to%20leave%20the%20trail%20by%20about%2014%20miles%20roundtrip,%20and%20an%20extra%20day%20of%20hiking.%20You%20could%20also%20hire%20a%20pack%20mule%20service%20which%20will%20set%20you%20back%20a%20few%20hundred%20dollars.%20Or%20you%20could%20find%20a%20loving%20husband%20who%20happily%20hikes%20in%207%20miles%20to%20resupply%20you%20for%20your%20last%204%20days,%20and%20walks%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20trail%20with%20you:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20have%20a%20feeling%20that,%20no%20matter%20how%20much%20whiskey%20he%20does%20or%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20bring,%20this%20will%20probably%20be%20my%20favorite%20of%20all%20the%20resupplies.%20But%20I%20also%20have%20a%20feeling%20he%20will%20want%20to%20sleep%20in%20a%20tent%20all%20by%20himself%20due%20to%20the%20stench%20emanating%20from%20the%20two%20of%20us.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20that%E2%80%99s%20the%20quick%203%20post%20rundown!%20We%20are%20almost%20ready%20for%20this%20thing.%20We%E2%80%99ll%20be%20in%20Yosemite%20in%20less%20than%2048%20hours,%20hopefully%20getting%20a%20good%20night%E2%80%99s%20sleep,%20and%20starting%20mile%201%20of%20many%20on%20Saturday.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERegardless%20of%20the%20outcome,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20report%20back%20here%20at%20some%20point%20%E2%80%93%20so%20stay%20tuned!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERelated%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
