Okay, so that hiatus went on a whole lot longer than I’d originally planned.
Short version: Life has been–crazy. 2013 was a very full, very stressful year and I really needed that time off from blogging. I’m still crazy busy, and I don’t know if I’ll be coming back even now, but I have felt this compulsion to post, so here I am.
We’ve got the gluten free thing down in our household. Now, I’m getting a new challenge, as I’ve recently found out that I’m casein intolerant. .%20%20The%20%E2%80%9Cveggie%E2%80%9D%20cheeses%20at%20the%20grocery%20store%20have%20casein.%20%20They%E2%80%99re%20geared%20to%20the%20lactose%20intolerant.%20%20There%20is%20a%20product%20called%20Daiya,%20but%20it%20is%20not%20available%20within%20a%203%20hour%20drive%20of%20me,%20and%20my%20grocery%20store%20won%E2%80%99t%20order%20it.%20%20It%E2%80%99s%20on%20my%20list%20of%20stuff%20to%20pick%20up%20on%20my%20trip%20down%20to%20New%20Orleans%20next%20month.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20vegan%20friend%20recommended%20to%20me%20The%20Uncheese%20Cookbook,%20which%20I%20picked%20up.%20%20After%20ordering%20a%20bunch%20of%20the%20ingredients%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20already%20have,%20I%E2%80%99ve%20been%20slowly%20going%20through%20and%20testing%20recipes%20in%20good%20faith,%20trying%20to%20maintain%20a%20positive%20attitude.%20%20I%20tried%20the%20Nacho%20Cheeze%20sauce%20on%20nachos,%20which%20were%20awful.%20%20I%20did%20discover%20that%20it%20works%20decently%20well%20for%20an%20Easy%20Mac.%20%20Last%20night%20I%20tried%20the%20faux%20mozzarella%20on%20pizza%20(which%20I%E2%80%99ve%20been%20craving%20for%20weeks,%20like%20WHOA),%20which%20was%20one%20of%20the%20most%20demoralizing%20food%20experiences%20I%E2%80%99ve%20ever%20had.%20%20It%20didn%E2%80%99t%20melt%20(casein%20is%20what%20makes%20cheese%20gloriously%20gooey%20and%20melty%20and%20wonderful)%20as%20the%20book%20said.%20%20Which%20ended%20up%20being%20a%20good%20thing,%20as%20I%20could%20still%20peel%20it%20off%20and%20at%20least%20eat%20my%20soggy%20tomato%20bread%20(which%20is%20what%20pizza%20is%20without%20cheese).%20%20I%20spent%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20night%20on%20the%20verge%20of%20tears.%20%20This%20would%20be%20after%20the%20weekend%20when%20we%20had%20a%20family%20dinner%20and%20I%20was%20asked%20to%20make%20a%20lemon%20icebox%20pie%20(I%20make%20kick%20ass%20awesome%20lemon%20icebox%20pie).%20%20I%20tried%20a%20vegan%20version%20that%20turned%20out%20like%20lemon%20snot,%20so%20I%20went%20ahead%20and%20made%20the%20real%20thing%20for%20everybody%20else%20and%20got%20to%20watch%20them%20nom%20and%20rave%20while%20I%20got%20nothing.%20%20And%20we%20circle%20back%20around%20to%20Blisteringly%20Furious%20and%20Depressed%20on%20the%20verge%20of%20tears.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99ve%20been%20looking%20around%20trying%20to%20find%20some%20good%20resources%20for%20dairy%20free%20food%20blogs.%20%20I%E2%80%99m%20really%20annoyed%20at%20all%20the%20ones%20out%20there%20with%20the%20sanctimonious%20lectures%20about%20how%20dairy%20is%20so%20bad%20for%20you%20and%20blah%20blah.%20%20I,%20frankly,%20don%E2%80%99t%20give%20a%20damn%20how%20bad%20it%20is%20for%20you.%20%20The%20lecture%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20help%20me%20know%20how%20to%20live%20without%20cheese.%20%20It%20was%20my%20one%20food%20that,%20if%20asked%20what%20I%20could%20never%20live%20without,%20I%20always%20said.%20%20This%20is%20so%20sucktastic%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20even%20know%20where%20to%20start.%20%20All%20the%20other%20dairy%20stuff%E2%80%93milk,%20desserts,%20that%20kind%20of%20thing%20are%20adaptable.%20%20I%20already%20found%20other%20stuff%20for%20those%20during%20the%20elimination%20diet%20that%20led%20to%20this%20discovery%20in%20the%20first%20place.%20%20But%20cheese?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20some%20point,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20go%20through%20my%20archives%20here%20and%20tag%20the%20recipes%20that%20are%20already%20naturally%20dairy%20free%20(as%20I%20did%20for%20gluten%20free).%20%20Given%20how%20much%20I%20love%20dairy,%20I%20doubt%20there%20will%20be%20a%20whole%20lot.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETAGS:Is%20there%20life%20after%20cheese?%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
