IDLI SAMBAR
This recipe is a speciality of South India.Idli and sambar medley makes a perfect breakfast. The main ingredients for this sambar are vegetables and lentils, which are cooked seperately , and finally combined together, seasoned with salt and the most important powder to be added is the gotsu powder, which gives a rich flavor to this sambar.Please do not be put off by the long cooking time, as the final dish is worth giving a try. Eventhough you have lots of chutneys ,there is nothing quite like eating hot idli's along with sambar. Serve it with a tsp. of ghee and enjoy :)
Preparation time : 20 mins.
Cooking time : 30 mins.
Serves : 4
For this recipe you need
- 1 cup of lentils (1/2 cup of moong dal and 1/2 cup of Thuvar dal)
- 1 big sized onion, finely chopped
- 2 green chillies, split lengthwise
- 1 big sized , well ripened tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1 cup of vegetables (carrot, brinjal and potato), finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp. of turmeric powder
- 1 garlic clove, peeled
- Salt
- Oil
- For seasoning
- 1 tsp. of mustard and urad dal
A sprig of curry leaves
2 dried red chillies
Preparation
Pressure cook the lentils along with turmeric powder and garlic, until soft.
Heat oil in a pan, fry the onions and green chillies until soft.
Tip in the vegetables , fry them for a couple of mins, when the veggies are half cooked add the tomatoes and fry for few more mins.
When the vegetables are cooked well add them to the lentils along with sufficient water
Add salt and gotsu powder and bring it to boil. Finally temper with the seasoning ingredients.
Idli sambar is ready to be served..............
Serve this delicious sambar with idli's or Dosa's and enjoy :)
Note :
Mix the gotsu powder with little water, and then add in the sambar, to avoid lumps.
