  1. Mix all the dry ingredients except the peel. Rub in the butter and add in the peel. Heat the treacle to just hot and add in the beaten Large eggs.
  2. Add in this to the flour mix and combine thoroughly. Add in the buttermilk and beat well. Bake in greased shallow tins in a moderate oven (350 F / 180 C / gas mark 4) for 30 to 40 min. Cold slightly and cut into squares.
