%20released%20with%20the%20original%20Corningware%20that%20hit%20the%20market%20in%201958.%20(The%20lids%20may%20have%20changed%20from%20Fin%20style%20to%20Knob%20style%20in%201960,%20but%20the%20handle%20remained%20unchanged)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20are%20extremely%20prolific%20in%20just%20about%20every%20thrift%20store%20on%20the%20planet.%20%20My%20theory?%20%20During%20the%20time%20of%20the%20P%20series%20Corningware,%20more%20people%20were%20actually%20using%20them%20on%20the%20stove%20top.%20Even%20though%20Corning%20changed%20the%20shape%20of%20Corningware%20in%201972,%20requiring%20a%20different%20handle,%20Corning%20still%20had%20P%20series%20pieces%20in%20production.%20%20The%20P-4-B%20is%20an%20excellent%20example.%20%20It%20was%20still%20being%20produced%20well%20into%20the%20late%2070's,%20which%20is%20why%20it's%20available%20in%20Spice%20O'%20Life,%20Country%20Festival,%20Wild%20Flower,%20Floral%20Bouquet.%20%20Heck,%20there%20is%20even%20a%20Christmas%20commemorative%20piece%20from%201978.%20Thus,%20the%20P%20Series%20handle%20was%20still%20in%20production%20well%20into%20the%2070's,%20possibly%20the%20early%2080's.%20%20That's%20A%20LOT%20of%20handles.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20in%201972%20Corning%20changed%20the%20shape%20of%20Corningware.%20%20It%20was%20more%20square,%20flatter%20on%20the%20bottom%20(though%20not%20actually%20%22flat%20ground%22%20like%20the%20Electromatic%20skillets%20and%20Cookmates)%20and%20had%20tighter%20fitting%20lids%20with%20larger%20knobs%20on%20the%20top.%20%20But%20most%20importantly,%20as%20far%20as%20handles%20are%20concerned,%20they%20changed%20the%20width%20of%20the%20%22lug%22%20that%20the%20handle%20attaches%20to.%20%20Thus,%20a%20new%20style%20of%20handle%20was%20needed.....%20The%20A-10-HG.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20handle%20is%20actually%20narrower%20where%20it%20attaches%20to%20the%20base%20piece%20than%20it's%20predecessor%20had%20been.%20%20Thus,%20the%20handle%20was%20designed%20for%20the%20lug%20to%20extend%20beyond%20the%20end%20of%20the%20clamping%20mechanism,%20instead%20of%20it%20being%20completely%20covered%20as%20it%20had%20been%20in%20the%20P%20series%20pieces.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20can%20testify%20to%20the%20larger%20lug%20making%20it%20easier%20to%20handle%20Corningware%20when%20removing%20it%20from%20the%20oven.%20%20But%20I%20cannot%20say%20as%20to%20whether%20the%20detachable%20handle%20design%20is%20a%20good%20one.%20%20To%20me,%20it%20seems%20like%20there%20is%20more%20stress%20being%20put%20on%20a%20smaller%20area.%20%20However,%20as%20you%20can%20see,%20there%20is%20more%20bracing%20from%20the%20side%20of%20the%20piece,%20than%20there%20was%20with%20the%20original%20handle.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20only%20own%201%20piece%20of%20A%20series%20Corningware,%20and%20it's%20an%20Electromatic%20skillet%20A-22.%20%20Thus%20I%20am%20not%20in%20the%20habit%20of%20moving%20my%20piece%20via%20the%20detachable%20handle.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow,%20let's%20discuss%20the%20lesser%20known%20handle.%20%20The%20P-201-HG.%20%20This%20handle%20should%20probably%20have%20been%20designated%20a%20B-10-HG,%20because%20it%20was%20available%20for%20the%20round%20Buffet%20Servers,%20Centura%20Cook%20n'%20Serve%20and%20Merry%20Mushroom%20Pieces,%20all%20of%20which%20are%20B%20series%20pieces%20(this%20also%20includes%20the%20Spice%20O'%20Life%20round%20as%20well).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHowever,%20the%20Buffet/Centura/Corning%20Round%20line%20had%20the%20same%20sized%20lugs%20as%20the%20P%20series.%20%20Thus,%20this%20detachable%20handle%20has%20the%20%22P%22%20designation,%20and%20will%20fit%20on%20P%20series%20pans.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20can%20tell,%20when%20seen%20side%20by%20side,%20that%20the%20P-201-HG%20had%20the%20basic%20design%20from%20which%20they%20took%20the%20design%20for%20the%20A%20Series%20Handle%20(A-10-HG).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20the%20A%20Series%20(A-10-HG)%20is%20a%20little%20more%20tapered%20and%20has%20%22cut-outs%22%20for%20the%20lug%20to%20pass%20through%20and%20more%20bracing%20against%20the%20side%20of%20the%20saucepan,%20the%20P-201-HG%20is%20really%20designed%20much%20like%20the%20P-10-HG%20at%20the%20connection%20point.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20only%20real%20difference%20between%20the%20P-201-HG%20and%20the%20P-10-HG,%20aside%20from%20the%20clamping%20mechanism%20being%20enclosed%20instead%20of%20open,%20is%20the%20style%20of%20the%20actual%20bakelite%20handle.%20%20The%20P-201-HG%20has%20a%20smooth%20upscale%20feel%20that%20befit%20the%20Buffet%20Servers%20that%20it%20was%20designed%20to%20accompany.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20is%20one%20other%20thing%20about%20this%20P-201-HG%20that%20you%20should%20know.%20%20When%20it%20was%20originally%20released%20(1964),%20you%20could%20get%20it%20in%20any%20color%20you%20chose....%20As%20long%20as%20it%20was%20black.%20%20:-)%20%20But%20when%20the%20Avocado%20Buffet%20servers%20hit%20the%20market%20in%201968%20(and%20Butterscotch%20in%201969),%20Corning%20released%20the%20P-201-HG%20in%20White.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECook%20n'%20Serve%20line%20and%20%22Corningware%20Round%22%20was%20released%20in%20Spice%20O'%20Life%20and%20Merry%20Mushroom%20through%20the%2070s.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYep,%20as%20far%20as%20I%20know%20this%20is%20the%20only%20%22White%22%20handle%20ever%20produced%20by%20Corning.%20%20I%20have%20heard%20rumors%20that%20the%20original%20P-10-HG%20and%20the%20A-10-HG%20came%20in%20white,%20but%20I%20have%20NEVER%20seen%20one%20in%20person,%20nor%20have%20I%20even%20seen%20a%20picture%20of%20one.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhere%20is%20your%20Corningware%20Detachable%20Handle??%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
