%20and%20of%20course%20they%20did,%20and%20so%20I%20decided%20that%20this%20year%20would%20truly%20become%20one%20giant%20mashup%20of%20everything.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThough%20I%20filed%20the%20recipe%20away%20for%20after%20the%20move,%20I%20quickly%20bought%20all%20of%20the%20more%20obscure%20ingredients%20on%20Amazon%20right%20away%20so%20I%20would%20have%20them%20when%20I%20finally%20had%20time%20to%20make%20it.%20Everything%20was%20readily%20available,%20from%20the%20wormwood%20to%20the%20dried%20bitter%20orange%20peel,%20and%20at%20no%20time%20did%20I%20have%20to%20buy%20anything%20more%20than%20a%20few%20ounces%20of%20each%20item.%20Sourcing%20the%20spirits%20I%20needed%20to%20help%20fortify%20the%20ros%C3%A9%20proved%20a%20little%20more%20difficult%20because%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20find%20unaged%20brandy%20anywhere,%20so%20instead%20I%20tried%20grappa.%20(I%20realized%20after%20the%20fact%20that%20I%20could%20have%20probably%20used%20pisco%20brandy,%20but%20I%E2%80%99ll%20try%20that%20in%20another%20batch.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20process%20is%20fairly%20straightforward,%20but%20requires%20a%20bit%20of%20time%20and%20planning%20to%20execute%20it.%20First,%20you%20want%20to%20infuse%20the%20clear%20alcohol%20of%20your%20choosing%20with%20strawberries;%20the%20recipe%20calls%20for%20you%20to%20do%20this%20in%20two%20days,%20but%20I%20used%20my%20iSi%20to%20do%20this%20rapid-infusion%20style.%20I%20kind%20of%20want%20to%20infuse%20a%20little%20of%20the%20grappa%20with%20some%20strawberries%20the%20traditional%20wa6y%20to%20see%20what%20changes%20could%20be%20noticeable,%20if%20any.%20You%20then%20use%20that%20to%20make%20a%20syrup%20with%20quite%20a%20bit%20of%20sugar,%20put%20that%20aside,%20and%20then%20infuse%20some%20of%20the%20ros%C3%A9%20with%20all%20of%20the%20herbs%20both%20fresh%20and%20dried%20before%20adding%20a%20cup%20of%20ruby%20port%20to%20the%20saucepan.%20That,%20along%20with%20the%20un-fortified%20wine%20then%20gets%20added%20to%20the%20grappa%20syrup%20where%20it%E2%80%99s%20brought%20to%20a%20boil%20and%20then%20left%20to%20steep%20for%20ten%20minutes%20before%20being%20put%20to%20chill%20in%20the%20fridge%20for%20a%20few%20hours%20and%20then%20strained%20into%20bottles.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESome%20of%20the%20more%20obscure%20vermouth%20ingredients.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20get%20a%20sizable%20quantity%20of%20vermouth,%20but%20because%20it%E2%80%99s%20hard%20to%20fractionalize%20the%20herbs%20in%20a%20meaningful%20way%20that%E2%80%99s%20unfortunately%20going%20to%20be%20the%20case%20regardless%20of%20which%20recipe%20you%20make.%20Mine%20filled%20two%201-liter%20IKEA%20stopped%20bottles%20plus%20half%20of%20a%20glass%20jar,%20and%20the%20mixture%20is%20good%20up%20to%20four%20months%20there%20in%20the%20fridge.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20thing%20is,%20it%20won%E2%80%99t%20really%20last%20that%20long%E2%80%93I%E2%80%99ve%20been%20taking%20to%20sipping%20it%20as%20a%20lovely%20aperitif%20while%20I%E2%80%99m%20getting%20dinner%20together%20after%20work%20with%20some%20soda%20water,%20and%20Michael%20enjoys%20it%20paired%20with%20some%20cava%20(because%20he%E2%80%99s%20a%20fan%20of%20putting%20almost%20anything%20with%20cava).%20Drinking%20it%20straight%20is%20OK%20so%20long%20as%20you%20have%20a%20few%20ice%20cubes%20in%20there,%20and%20there%20will%20probably%20be%20a%20time%20sooner%20rather%20than%20later%20when%20I%20make%20a%20round%20of%20martinis%20using%20this%20instead%20of%20our%20trusty%20Dolin.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20isn%E2%80%99t%20as%20sweet%20as,%20say,%20Casa%20Mariol%E2%80%99s%20Vermut%20Negre%20but%20it%E2%80%99s%20not%20as%20dry%20as%20a%20dry%20white%20vermouth;%20it%20definitely%20takes%20on%20some%20interesting%20herbal%20notes%20that%20I%20think%20have%20mellowed%20a%20bit%20since%20I%20first%20made%20it.%20It%20definitely%20benefits%20from%20being%20able%20to%20sit%20in%20the%20fridge%20for%20a%20day%20or%20two,%20so%20as%20we%20approach%20Memorial%20Day%20weekend%20consider%20taking%20some%20time%20this%20week%20to%20make%20a%20batch%20to%20celebrate%20the%20much-needed%20long%20weekend.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERos%C3%A9%20vermouth%20topped%20with%20soda%20water.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHomemade%20Ros%C3%A9%20Vermouth%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInfuse%20the%20grappa:%20either%20combine%20all%20of%20the%20strawberries%20and%20grappa%20into%20a%20large%20glass%20jar%20large%20enough%20to%20hold%20them%20all%20and%20submerge%20the%20strawberries,%20or%20divide%20them%20to%20infuse%20them%20separately%20for%20the%20iSi%20Whip.%20For%20the%20traditional%20route,%20all%20you%20have%20to%20do%20is%20let%20it%20sit%20for%20two%20days.%20For%20the%20rapid%20infusion%20method,%20combine%20half%20of%20the%20liquid%20and%20half%20of%20the%20strawberries,%20charge%20with%20one%20charger,%20shake,%20let%20rest%20for%2030%20seconds,%20and%20then%20shake%20again%20before%20resting%20for%20another%2030%20seconds.%20Carefully%20vent%20and%20pour%20into%20a%20glass%20and%20let%20rest%20while%20you%20do%20the%20second%20half%20of%20the%20grappa%20and%20strawberries.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStrain%20the%20strawberries%20out%20and%20discard,%20and%20then%20set%20aside%20the%20grappa.%20In%20a%20large%20nonreactive%20saucepan%20(one%20that%20will%20be%20large%20enough%20to%20hold%20this%20and%20the%20ros%C3%A9%20and%20the%20port),%20combine%20the%20sugar%20and%201/4%20cup%20water%20over%20moderately%20low%20heat,%20swirling%20from%20time%20to%20time%20until%20a%20pale%20amber%20caramel%20forms.%20Remove%20the%20pan%20from%20heat%20and%20carefully%20add%20the%20grappa,%20and%20a%20syrup%20will%20form;%20set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20smaller%20saucepan,%20combine%20all%20of%20the%20herbs%20with%20the%20wormwood%20and%20gentian%20root%20with%203%20cups%20of%20the%20ros%C3%A9%20and%20bring%20to%20a%20boil.%20Turn%20off%20the%20heat%20and%20let%20it%20stand%20for%2010%20minutes%20before%20adding%20the%20ruby%20port.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECombine%20the%20fortified%20wine%20with%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20wine%20into%20the%20pan%20with%20the%20grappa%20syrup,%20and%20then%20grate%20orange%20zest%20over%20everything.%20Let%20stand%20in%20the%20fridge%20for%20at%20least%20two%20hours%20or%20until%20cold.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStrain%20everything%20well,%20and%20then%20place%20in%20bottles%E2%80%93you%E2%80%99ll%20get%20about%20two%20and%20a%20half%20liters,%20all%20told.%20Will%20stay%20good%20in%20the%20fridge%20for%20up%20to%20four%20months.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERelated%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
