  I was living in Stockbridge, Massachusetts the first time I ate a searing hot pepper. It was one of those long, pointy, skinny peppers popular in Asian dishes that arrived on my plate at a neighborhood Thai restaurant. I figured if it was on the plate, I was supposed to eat it.
