  • 2 Tablespoons shortening
  • 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 6 cups water
  • 4 beef bouillon cubes
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • (or 1/2 teaspoon instant minced garlic)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1-1/2 cups onions, chopped
  • 8 medium potatoes, peeled, and cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 4 cups carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup flour

  1. Melt shortening in large saucepan; brown meat. Add water, bouillon cubes, garlic, salt, allspice, lemon juice and onions. Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until meat is almost tender (1 to 1-1/2 hours). Add potatoes and carrots; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 40 minutes.
