%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPompelmocello%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%E2%80%99s%20something%20magical%20about%20taking%20a%20nondescript%20bottle%20of%20vodka%20and%20turning%20it%20into%20limoncello;%20that%20is,%20until%20you%20turn%20it%20into%20pompelmocello%20(or%20whatever%20the%20Italians%20call%20grapefruit%20peels%20steeped%20in%20alcohol%20and%20sugar%20syrup%E2%80%93I%E2%80%99m%20improvising%20here).%20%20As%20lovely%20as%20lemons%20are,%20I%E2%80%99m%20one%20who%20can%20eat%20a%20few%20grapefruit%20in%20one%20sitting%20if%20the%20mood%20strikes%E2%80%A6and%20if%20the%20quantity%20is%20before%20me.%20%20It%E2%80%99s%20one%20of%20my%20favorite%20breakfast%20foods%20in%20winter;%20nothing%20brightens%20a%20grey%20day%20like%20slicing%20into%20a%20bright%20red,%20pink%20or%20white%20citrus%20fruit,%20no?%20%20And%20really,%20given%20the%20warmer%20weather%20we%E2%80%99ve%20received%20this%20week%20after%20a%20weekend%20of%20awful%20wind%20and%20rain,%20sipping%20on%20a%20small%20glass%20of%20this%20felt%20like%20drinking%20in%20the%20glorious%20sun.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20recipe%20was%20cobbled%20together%20from%20several%20online%20recipes,%20with%20me%20obsessively%20doing%20factor-label%20conversions%20[Ed.%20-%20That's%20the%20correct%20terminology,%20right%20Michael?]%20%20and%20recipe%20searches%20to%20figure%20out%20the%20correct%20proportions%20between%20vodka,%20citrus%20and%20simple%20syrup%20mix.%20%20I%E2%80%99ll%20be%20honest:%20this%20is%20still%20a%20work%20in%20progress%20and%20isn%E2%80%99t%20exactly%20what%20I%20wanted,%20but%20the%20current%20results%20taste%20like%20a%20grapefruit%20in%20a%20glass%E2%80%93though%20not%20to%20be%20confused%20with%20a%20glass%20of%20grapefruit%20juice.%20%20Ina%20Garten%20likes%20to%20talk%20about%20how%20the%20zest%20of%20a%20citrus%20fruit%20contains%20more%20of%20the%20real%20flavor%20of%20the%20fruit%20compared%20to%20the%20juice,%20and%20when%20you%E2%80%99ve%20steeped%20that%20zest%20in%20vodka%20for%20over%20two%20weeks%20you%E2%80%99re%20pretty%20much%20guaranteed%20that%20you%20will%20be%20walloped%20in%20the%20mouth%20with%20that%20flavor.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20real%20question%20is%20how%20much%20sweetness%20to%20add%20to%20this%20mix.%20%20Michael%20hates%20an%20overly%20sweet%20liquor,%20and%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20blame%20him%E2%80%93it%E2%80%99s%20much%20more%20refreshing%20to%20indulge%20in%20a%20crisper%20spirit%20with%20a%20higher%20alcohol%20content%20than%20one%20that%20is%20overly%20sweet%20and%20otherwise%20weak,%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20why%20I%20will%20generally%20prefer%20a%20glass%20of%20Sambuca%20over%20one%20of%20anisette.%20%20(The%20one%20exception%20to%20this%20rule%20is,%20of%20course,%20Campari%E2%80%93but%20that%E2%80%99s%20another%20installment%20on%20its%20own.)%20%20Part%20of%20the%20reason%20why%20I%20let%20the%20zest%20steep%20so%20long%20was%20because%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20find%20a%20proportion%20to%20the%20amount%20of%20vodka%20that%20I%20used%20that%20was%20satisfactory,%20and%20rather%20than%20overwhelm%20the%20mixture%20with%20sugar%20I%20let%20it%20sit%20in%20the%20fridge.%20%20I%20finally%20decided%20on%20a%201:1%20ratio%20of%20two%20cups%20warm%20water%20to%20sugar,%20but%20I%20think%20this%20may%20have%20been%20too%20much%E2%80%93for%20our%20next%20go%20at%20this,%20I%20think%20one%20and%20a%20half%20cups%20of%20water%20and%20sugar%20might%20be%20just%20enough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20purists,%20of%20course,%20can%20have%20at%20me%20in%20the%20comments%E2%80%93in%20the%20meantime,%20here%20is%20our%20current%20recipe%20for%20pompelmocello:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPompelmocello%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20grapefruit%20zest%20and%20vodka%20to%20a%20pitcher%20or%20mason%20jar%20that%20is%20large%20enough%20to%20hold%20more%20than%20the%20entire%20bottle%20of%20vodka,%20seal%20and%20let%20sit%20for%20at%20least%20four%20days%20at%20room%20temperature%20and%20up%20to%20two%20weeks%20in%20the%20fridge,%20stirring%20the%20peels%20a%20little%20every%20few%20days.%20%20Warm%20the%20water%20up%20in%20a%20medium-sized%20bowl%20in%20the%20microwave%20and%20stir%20in%20the%20sugar,%20whisking%20vigorously%20to%20combine.%20Allow%20time%20to%20cool%20slightly%20and%20then%20add%20to%20grapefruit%20and%20vodka,%20letting%20it%20steep%20for%20one%20more%20night.%20Strain%20contents%20into%20the%20bottle%20and%20store%20in%20the%20fridge.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBuon%20apetito!%20Or%20should%20I%20say:%20%20Sl%C3%A1inte,%20as%20today%20is%20St.%20Patrick%E2%80%99s%20Day!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
