.%20I%20have%20long%20admired%20Bascove's%20book%20jacket%20illustrations%20for%20Ellis%20Peters'%20splendid%20Brother%20Cadfael%20medieval%20mystery%20series%20(her%20jackets%20resemble%20stained%20glass%20windows)%20and%20the%20novels%20of%20the%20late%20Robertson%20Davies,%20and%20when%20I%20discovered%20that%20she%20also%20had%20literary%20talents,%20I%20sought%20out%20this%20volume.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20anthology%20contains%2077%20poems,%20prose%20excerpts%20and%20short%20pieces%20from%20a%20variety%20of%20authors,%20from%20Vladimir%20Nabokov%20remembering%20mushroom%20picking%20with%20his%20Russian%20mother%20to%20sassy%20poetry%20by%20Langston%20Hughes%20to%20an%20essay%20ruminating%20on%20cannibalism%20by%20Margaret%20Visser.%20Interspersed%20with%20all%20these%20literary%20gems%20are%20some%20sparkling%20paintings%20by%20Bascove.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20my%20Cook%20the%20Books%20inspiration,%20I%20chose%20the%20poem%20%22Hot%22,%20by%20Craig%20Arnold,%20whom%20I%20sadly%20found%20out%20disappeared%20while%20hiking%20around%20a%20Japanese%20volcano%20in%202009%20and%20is%20presumed%20dead.%20You%20can%20read%20a%20full%20version%20of%20Arnold's%20poem%20here%20(or%20in%20our%20chosen%20book),%20but%20in%20summary,%20it's%20a%20long%20conversation%20between%20two%20friends%20who%20haven't%20seen%20each%20other%20in%20a%20while%20and%20had%20originally%20bonded%20over%20a%20love%20of%20spicy%20food.%20When%20the%20narrator%20arrives%20at%20his%20friend's%20house,%20he%20finds%20that%20his%20passion%20for%20peppers%20and%20food%20with%20heat%20has%20consumed%20him.%20He%20has%20parched%20lips,%20a%20haunted%20look%20and%20a%20fridge%20full%20of%20condiments.%20Here's%20the%20final%20stanzas:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%22He%20stops,%20expressing%20heat%20from%20every%20pore%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eof%20his%20full%20face,%20unable%20to%20give%20vent%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eto%20any%20more,%20and%20sits,%20silent,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ea%20whole%20minute.%E2%80%94You%20understand?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOf%20course,%20I%20tell%20him.%20As%20he%20takes%20my%20hand%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20can%E2%80%99t%20help%20but%20notice%20the%20strength%20his%20grip%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ehas%20lost,%20as%20he%20lifts%20it%20to%20his%20lip,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Epresses%20it%20for%20a%20second,%20the%20torn%20flesh%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eas%20soft,%20as%20tenuous,%20as%20ash,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Enot%20in%20the%20least%20harsh%20or%20rough,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewreck%20of%20a%20mouth,%20that%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20say%20enough.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDan%20and%20I%20are%20aficionados%20of%20spicy%20food%20and%20we%20dearly%20love%20growing%20and%20cooking%20with%20hot%20peppers.%20We%20like%20to%20grow%20poblanos%20and%20Thai%20bird%20chiles%20and%20have%20even%20had%20good%20luck%20with%20jalapenos%20in%20our%20Zone%204%20garden.%20But%20I%20do%20not%20aspire%20to%20become%20a%20fearsome%20chili-head%20that%20must%20eat%20heat%20with%20every%20meal.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20pored%20over%20one%20of%20my%20newest%20cookbook%20additions,%20%22Fire%20and%20Spice:%20200%20Hot%20and%20Spicy%20Recipes%20from%20the%20Far%20East%22,%20by%20Jacki%20Passmore%20(NY:%20Macmillan,%201996)%20and%20selected%20a%20recipe%20to%20try:%20Indonesian%20Sweet%20Corn%20and%20Chili%20Fritters.%20I%20had%20to%20tweak%20Passmore's%20recipe%20to%20make%20it%20gluten%20free,%20substituting%20buckwheat%20flour%20for%20the%20all-purpose%20flour%20specified%20in%20the%20recipe.%20The%20first%20batch%20of%20fritters%20were%20hard%20to%20flip,%20though%20they%20had%20a%20lighter%20and%20crispier%20texture.%20I%20added%20in%20some%20coconut%20flour%20to%20thicken%20things%20up%20and%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20fritters%20were%20easier%20to%20handle,%20but%20they%20did%20get%20thicker%20and%20more%20pancake-y.%20Those%20are%20the%20buckwheat-only%20fritters%20on%20the%20left.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20were%20not%20all%20that%20spicy,%20despite%20having%20a%20fresh%20red%20chili%20pepper%20in%20the%20batter.%20I%20did%20serve%20them%20along%20with%20a%20batch%20of%20Dan's%20chunky%20roasted%20red%20pepper%20and%20hot%20spicy%20pepper%20relish%20that%20he%20likes%20to%20keep%20on%20hand%20in%20our%20many%20shelves%20of%20fridgey%20condiments%20(maybe%20we%20have%20more%20in%20common%20with%20the%20poem's%20subject%20than%20I%20thought)%20to%20up%20the%20Scoville%20units.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDan's%20recipe%20for%20his%20Chunky%20Pepper%20Relish%20is%20simple,%20involves%20a%20blow%20torch,%20and%20is%20something%20that%20he%20finds%20very%20relaxing.%20He%20starts%20with%20a%20couple%20of%20red%20bell%20peppers,%20which%20he%20prefers%20to%20roast%20with%20a%20blow%20torch%20while%20sitting%20at%20the%20kitchen%20table,%20listening%20to%20tunes.%20(I%20prefer%20to%20cut%20them%20in%20half,%20seed%20them%20and%20roast%20in%20the%20oven,%20but%20he%20likes%20the%20torch%20method.%20Perhaps%20because%20it%20amuses%20our%20daughters%20so%20endlessly).%20Then%20he%20chops%20it%20up,%20adds%20in%20a%20couple%20of%20teaspoons%20of%20fresh%20hot%20peppers,%20chopped,%202%20cloves%20garlic,%
