,%20indicating%20the%20start%20of%20monsoons.%20Padhinettu%20means%2018%20and%20Perukku%20means%20'rising'%20and%20on%20this%20day,%20the%20rivers%20are%20swollen%20with%20water%20from%20the%20rains.%20I've%20heard%20stories%20from%20my%20great-grandmother%20on%20how%20they%20would%20pack%20tiffin%20carriers%20full%20of%20different%20kinds%20of%20rice%20dishes%20and%20enjoy%20a%20picnic%20on%20the%20banks%20of%20the%20village%20river.%20The%20different%20rice%20varieties%20are%20prepared%20as%20an%20offering%20for%20the%20river%20goddess.%20Lemon%20rice,%20coconut%20rice,%20tamarind%20rice,%20sweet%20rice,%20curd%20rice%20and%20of%20course%20my%20favourite,%20sesame%20rice%20are%20some%20of%20the%20types%20of%20rice%20dishes%20prepared%20on%20this%20day.%20Of%20course,%20in%20smaller%20families%20in%20the%20city,%20families%20choose%20to%20prepare%202-3%20kinds%20of%20rice%20along%20with%20meal%20finale-ie.%20curd%20rice.%20Even%20to%20this%20day,%20my%20family%20believes%20that%20on%20this%20day,%20there%20will%20always%20be%20heavy%20rainfall,%20and%20co-incidence%20or%20whatever,%20the%20rain%20gods%20do%20stick%20to%20their%20predictions!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20when%20I%20was%20a%20child,%20I%20was%20a%20fan%20of%20all%20the%20rice%20varieties-%20or%20kalandha%20saadham%20as%20it%20is%20called%20in%20Tamil.%20Usually,%20there%20would%20be%20a%20koottu%20and%20some%20plain%20rice%20too%20along%20with%20these%20on%20the%20menu%20and%20of%20course,%20fried%20appalams%20and%20vadams%20to%20go%20with%20the%20kalandha%20saadham.%20Although%20sesame%20is%20quite%20a%20complex%20flavour,%20I%20have%20been%20in%20love%20with%20all%20dishes%20made%20using%20sesame%20seeds,%20right%20since%20childhood.%20Ellu-urundai%20or%20sesame%20seed%20chikki%20(praline)%20shaped%20as%20balls%20are%20prepared%20on%20the%20srardham%20(thevasam)%20days%20to%20remember%20the%20deceased%20ancestors.%20As%20a%20kid,%20I%20have%20asked%20my%20grandmother%20why%20she%20made%20this%20only%20on%20those%20special%20days.%20Needless%20to%20say,%20my%20such%20questions%20were%20not%20appreciated%20in%20those%20days%20:D%20Subbu's%20Kitchen%20writes%20more%20on%20the%20thevasam%20recipes%20that%20includes%20my%20favourite,%20ellu-urundai.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20few%20years%20ago,%20when%20I%20was%20on%20a%20holiday%20in%20Hong%20Kong,%20I%20fell%20in%20love%20with%20black%20sesame%20seed%20ice%20cream.%20I%20had%20never%20imagined%20that%20this%20could%20be%20an%20ice%20cream%20flavour!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESesame%20seeds%20also%20feature%20in%20this%20special%20dish%20called%20Thalagam,%20also%20made%20on%20specific%20festival%20day%20called%20Thiruvadharai.%20The%20toasted%20sesame%20seeds%20are%20ground%20to%20a%20paste%20along%20with%20roasted%20coconut,%20udad%20dal,%20fenugreek%20seeds,%20rice%20and%20red%20chillies%20to%20make%20an%20intensely%20fragrant%20masala.%20This%20makes%20the%20'curry'%20really%20thick%20without%20any%20addition%20of%20dal.%20Think%20of%20it%20as%20a%20sambar%20variety%20minus%20the%20dal%20and%20completely%20unique%20flavours.%20The%20only%20way%20to%20taste%20this%20is%20to%20invite%20yourself%20to%20a%20Tambrahm%20friend's%20house%20or%20make%20it%20yourself.%20I%20don't%20think%20there%20are%20any%20restaurants%20that%20have%20this%20on%20their%20menu.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EComing%20to%20the%20recipe%20of%20Ellu%20Saadham,%20sesame%20seeds%20are%20dry%20roasted%20till%20they%20pop.%20This%20is%20ground%20to%20a%20coarse%20powder%20with%20some%20other%20spices,%20to%20prepare%20the%20mix.%20Rice%20is%20steamed%20and%20cooled%20and%20to%20the%20cooled%20rice,%20the%20freshly%20prepared%20podi%20is%20added%20and%20gently%20mixed%20together.%20The%20tadka%20of%20curry%20leaves%20and%20red%20chillies%20with%20some%20udad%20dal%20for%20crunch%20is%20of%20course%20mandatory%20:)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERecipe%20for%20Ellu%20Saadham%20/%20Sesame%20Rice%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServes%202%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20cooking%20the%20rice,%20ensure%20that%20you%20use%20lesser%20water%20and%20reduce%20cooking%20time%20slightly%20so%20that%20the%20grains%20are%20separate.%20Once%20cooked,%20spread%20out%20to%20cool%20on%20a%20large%20plate%20/%20thali.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20small%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ekadai,%20using%20a%20few%20drops%20of%20oil,%20fry%20the%20red%20chillies%20and%20udad%20dal%20till%20the%20dal%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eis%20golden%20is%20colour.%20Remove%20and%20keep%20aside.%20In%20the%20same%20kadai,%20saut%C3%A9%20the%20sesame%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eseeds%20until%20they%20emit%20a%20nice%20aroma%20and%20start%20popping.%20Once%20the%20popping%20stops,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eremove%20them%20along%20with%20the%20fried%20chillies%20and%20udad%20dal%20and%20grind%20to%20a%20coarse%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Epowder%20in%20the%20mixer%20along%20with%201/2%20tsp%20of%20salt.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpread%20this%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Epowder%20on%20the%20cooked%20rice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20same%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ekadai,%20heat%20the%20oil%20for%20tempering.%20Once%20oil%20is%20hot,%20add%20mustard%20seeds,%20udad%3C/p
