The next in the series after the Colorful coins for kids lunchbox is wraps & rolls made from Indian bread called chapattis. This simple & handy is one of the favorite of my son. A perfect lunch idea for hyper kids who are always on the move and disregard the idea of sitting and having lunch at one place.

Wraps N Rolls are simple vegetable curries wrapped in chapattis, very much kids friendly and healthy too. A common lunch option in many parts of India where wheat is a staple food.

Some helpful suggestions:

The dough to make the wraps should not be kneaded too hard, else the wraps will come out brittle and crisp.

The stuffing inside the rolls should be dry to avoid the chapattis to become soggy.

Secure the rolls in a silver foil to keep the filling intact.

Spread tomato ketchup to make the rolls more tangy.

Use wholewheat to make the dough for the bread(chapatti).

There are many variations to try out making the rolls more attractive and healthy. Since the following series are meant for kids, I am using less spices to make it kids more kids friendly.

The basic dough for the rolls can be prepared in advance and refrigerated for future use to save on time. The dough stays fresh for 3-4 days in fridge.

Knead the dough with milk when making rolls for kids to increase the calcium content of the chapattis.

Mixing the dough with milk and little ghee will make the chapattis stay fresh & palatable for longer time.

Method: Mix the flour with salt and ghee, add water or milk and knead it to a dough of soft consistency. Take a small portion of dough and make a perfect round, roll it in the dry flour. Sprinkle a little flour on the board, flatten the ball using a rolling pin to make a circular shape of 2-3 mm in thickness.

Heat a tawa on high flame and put the rolled out chapatti on it. Flip it once it changes colour and let the other side cook for another minute. Take it out from the tawa and roast it directly on the high flame for a few seconds. Allow it to balloon up. Smear little ghee on one side and the wrap is done. Use the basic wrap to make rolls of your choice.

Hint: The time of flipping decides the fate of the chapattis. It should be turned just once on the tawa to make it more soft & fluffy.

Mixed Vegetable Rolls

Ingredients;

200 gms mixed vegetables

1/3 tsp.chilly powder

1/3 tsp turmeric powder

1/2 tsp coriander powder

1 tbsp oil

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

a pinch of asafoetida powder

Method: Select vegetables such as carrots, potato, beans, beetroot, cabbage and peas as these veggies release less water when cooked. Peel and dice the veggies in fine pieces. Heat oil i a wok and add mustard seeds, let it splutter. Add all the dry spice powder and fry for a minute. Mix in all veggies and cook till done.

Cool the cooked veggies and fill in the above wrap and fold it to make a roll. Secure it with aluminum foil to avoid spilling of veggies inside while eating.

Note: Many vegetables release water when cooked. Cook such veggies for a few minutes extra till the water in it dries.
