Рецепт Wilted Lettuce Salad; the update - tile
Saturday we took our trusty trailer and went to get the shopping.....
It occurred to me, half way to Bordeaux, that the trusty trailer might not be big enough to handle the shopping.....
Mon mari had no such doubts.
Between the back of the car and the trailer, we managed, but there was a lot of groaning and complaining by the axles.
Wimps.
Whom else do you know who will post a photo of their bathtub?
Maybe later I'll do one of me and bubbles......
And I know you have all been on pins and needles waiting to see the tile:
Now it's imagination time:
The floor tile is white. It's not a pure white, but has a gray/blue marble effect, as do the white wall tiles.
The blue wall tiles match the blue in the listels, above.
The large listel will be the splash for the sink counter top, which will be done in the blue. Above the listel will be white.
The shower walls and walls around the tube will have 4 rows of blue, the smaller listel,, then white to the ceiling.
Do you have all that firmly in your mind? Good, now I don't have to bother taking photos of the finished bathroom.
I did one of the scariest things of my life yesterday.... Helped get the tub upstairs.
Mon mari was above, pulling it. I was below, pushing and stabilizing. Half way up the stairs, I realized that, if for any reason mon mari should lose his grip on the tub I wouldn't be able to support it and me, with the tub on top, would go ass over appetite backwards down the stairs.
It was a very scary thought.
Fortunately, by the time it really registered, the tub was resting on the landing.
That's when I realized that he had a rope going through the drain holes of the tub and wrapped around his neck.
I couldn't decide if I should feel relief or terror.
I went to the garden and hoed.
There is something about gardens that brings out the 'retro' cook in me.
Maybe it's memories of a simpler time: childhood summers spent without a care, playing hide & seek at dusk, catching fireflies....
My mother sending me out to the garden at the last minute to pick lettuce for this salad - which was her mother's favorite.
It's made with leaf lettuce - which is something one plants, not buys.
The photo is of it chopped and ready for the salad.
It's an old-fashioned lettuce. I plant Black-Seeded Simpson (I get the seeds in the US). It's planted in a row and, as it grows, one picks off the bigger leaves to use. It's lighter and thinner than head lettuce, and is best used shortly after picking.
It's perfect for this classic salad. As is my new favorite vinegar: Apple Balsamic.
- Wilted Lettuce Salad for two
- 8oz (250gr) leaf lettuce
- 2 tbs fresh dill
- 3oz (90gr) bacon
- 1/2 onion
- 1/4 cup (2oz, 60gr) apple balsamic vinegar or 1/4 cup cider vinegar plus 1 tsp sugar
- 2 tsp olive oil
Wash lettuce and spin dry. Pile it up and cut it 3 or 4 times with a large knife. Roughly chop dill.
Chop the onion and slice bacon into matchsticks. Heat oil in a very large skillet. Add onion, bacon and fry until bacon it crisp. Add vinegar (and sugar) and heat through.
Remove skillet from heat, add lettuce and dill. It may not all fit at first. Using a tongs, carefully turn and toss the lettuce, coating it the vinegar bacon mixture. Add more lettuce as the lettuce in the skillet wilts down, until all added. Give it one final toss, serve and eat immediately.
Remember: It's supposed to be wilted - not cooked.
If you don't have a kitchen scale - basically you want enough lettuce for 4 large salads. You will look at it and think it's way too much. You will be wrong. It will wilt down to a perfect salad for two.
