,%20pick%20my%20direction%20and%20drive.%20I%20do%20not%20need%20any%20other%20reason%20other%20than%20to%20enjoy%20the%20world%20around%20me%20and%20hopefully%20the%20one%20I%E2%80%99m%20going%20to.%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20need%20to%20consult%20Yelp%20for%20best%20destinations%20or%20Google%20Maps%20for%20best%20routes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHell,%20my%20dad%20used%20to%20do%20it%20all%20the%20time.%20%E2%80%9CWhere%20are%20we%20going?%E2%80%9D%20my%20brother%20and%20I%20would%20ask.%20%E2%80%9CThis%20way,%E2%80%9D%20he%20would%20say%20as%20he%20pointed%20straight%20out%20over%20the%20hood%20of%20his%20little%20gray%20Toyota%20pickup.%20Eventually,%20my%20brother%20and%20I%20learned%20to%20just%20shut%20our%20mouths%20and%20watch%20the%20world%20come%20to%20us%20through%20the%20window.%20We%20didn%E2%80%99t%20know%20where%20we%20were%20going%20and%20we%20didn%E2%80%99t%20care.%20We%20got%20to%20know%20the%20people%20who%20lived%20and%20worked%20throughout%20our%20travels.%20Gas%20station%20attendants%20(when%20they%20used%20to%20have%20them),%20hardware%20store%20clerks,%20forest%20rangers%20and%20farmers.%20It%E2%80%99s%20where%20I%20learned%20to%20talk%20to%20people.%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20have%20to%20be%20in%20their%20%E2%80%9Ccircle%E2%80%9D%20or%20group.%20I%20just%20had%20to%20listen%20and%20learn.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20can%20honestly%20say%20some%20of%20my%20best%20family%20memories%20came%20from%20trips%20that%20started%20this%20way.%20I%20woke%20up,%20ate%20breakfast%20and%20soon%20after%20was%20ordered%20to%20the%20truck%20by%20my%20father.%20An%20hour%20later%20my%20brother%20and%20I%20were%20standing%20in%20the%20haunting%20and%20beautiful%20wasteland%20of%20an%20explosion%20estimated%20to%20be%20over%20500%20times%20more%20powerful%20than%20that%20of%20the%20atomic%20bomb%20dropped%20over%20Hiroshima.%20A%20volcano%20thought%20to%20be%20forever%20dormant:%20Mt%20Saint%20Helens.%20All%20the%20trees%20laid%20out%20like%20matchsticks.%20And%20sometimes,%20we%20found%20ourselves%20at%20a%20donut%20shop%20enjoying%20a%20glazed%20buttermilk%20and%20each%20others%20company.%20I%20learned%20that%20was%20all%20we%20really%20needed.%20Each%20other.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAwhile%20back%20that%E2%80%99s%20just%20what%20I%20did.%20Threw%20the%20boys%20and%20a%20willing%20Chelsea%20into%20my%20truck%20and%20drove.%20Knowing%20food%20was%20a%20necessity,%20I%20picked%20it%20up%20along%20the%20way%20and%20took%20it%20with%20us.%20We%20drove,%20through%20town,%20past%20the%20orange%20and%20avocado%20groves.%20Then,%20to%20the%20foot%20of%20a%20mountain%20and%20the%20beginning%20or%20end%20of%20an%20all%20but%20forgotten%20mountain%20pass.%20When%20Chelsea%20asked,%20%E2%80%9CWhere%20are%20we%20going?%E2%80%9D%20I%20pointed%20out%20over%20the%20hood%20of%20my%20pickup%20truck%20and%20said,%20%E2%80%9CThis%20way.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEventually,%20I%20found%20the%20place%20I%20knew%20I%20had%20driven%20for.%20A%20dozer-crafted%20turnout%20on%20the%20edge%20of%20the%20mountain.%20Dinner%20was%20much%20nicer%20at%206000%20feet.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
