Рецепт Twisto Cristo
by Amber Massey

The Monte Cristo. This sandwich was originally served in 1910 in a Paris cafe, but resembled closer to a grilled cheese sandwich (umm, yes, another none of those 'never gets old 'kid foods'.) stacked with a combination of Gruyere cheese and ham between two slices of crust-less bread, and then fried to golden goodness in clarified butter. I'm sure it was something your tastebuds would scream in joy about. Especially when the savory was paired with the sweet- A classic Monte Cristo sandwich should come with a side of jelly to dip it in. Though this sandwich tends to vary from restaurant to restaurant, the basic sandwich still sets back into it's originality with the typical two slices of white bread containing ham, turkey, or chicken, and a slice of cheese. Don't forget, it is then dipped in beaten egg and fried in butter.. hmmm, how do I get around this one? How do you get around and ingredient or a step in a recipe that supports a huge component of what the dish is all about? My suggestion is take the flavors and idea and switch it up! Here, I skipped the frying aspect and opted for the gril. I then still included the ham/cheese, but spread it with the raspberry preserves before assembling the sandwhich into one.

One More Thing...

When using deli and pre-packaged luncheon meats, beware of sodium. Just one (2-oz.) serving of some brands contains upwards of 1/3 of the recommended daily sodium intake. For a healthy individual, 2,300 mg is the max, and for someone with high blood pressure, kidney disease or diabetes, 1500 mg should be where the shaker stops. I think I could go on and on about this..So, I'll just leave you with encouragement to buy low-sodium varieties. Try to stick with a brand that is 350 milligrams of sodium or less for one serving, which your deli person at your grocery can help you with if you are feeling overwhelmed. (Or you can ask your friendly local dietitian!)
