I love this cake dome; it was my grandmother's.
I'm writing this at 11 PM on Thursday night, a work night. I need this cake, that's still in the oven, for my dad's birthday dinner tomorrow night. Oh, and I just realized that the half bag of dark chocolate chips in the pantry has mysteriously become less than the necessary 4 oz.
My baking tonight has been a comedy of errors, (the only thing missing is the dog pulling the cake off of the counter) so I'm not going to detail the prescribed process. I've been so far from it, and you can read all about it on the other HCB blogs. I'll just mention of few of the things that weren't ideal, and we'll wait to see how it turns out in the end.

%20so%20I'm%20not%20going%20to%20detail%20the%20prescribed%20process.%20%20I've%20been%20so%20far%20from%20it,%20and%20you%20can%20read%20all%20about%20it%20on%20the%20other%20HCB%20blogs.%20%20I'll%20just%20mention%20of%20few%20of%20the%20things%20that%20weren't%20ideal,%20and%20we'll%20wait%20to%20see%20how%20it%20turns%20out%20in%20the%20end.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20wasn't%20able%20to%20find%20Seville%20oranges.%20%20I%20mentioned%20to%20a%20friend%20today%20that%20my%20search%20had%20been%20unsuccessful.%20%20He%20offered%20to%20bring%20me%20some.%20%20He's%20a%20landscape%20designer%20that%20works%20for%20a%20large%20nursery.%20%20Apparently,%20they%20have%20several%20of%20the%20trees,%20and%20the%20fruit%20is%20just%20falling%20off.%20%20Too%20late%20for%20this%20cake,%20but%20next%20year,%20I'll%20know%20where%20to%20go.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJust%20as%20I%20finished%20beating%20the%20egg%20mixture%20for%205%20minutes.%20%20The%20phone%20rang;%20it%20was%20an%20important%20call.%20%20My%20eggs%20sat%20for%20probably%2020%20minutes.%20%20They%20seemed%20a%20little%20flatter%20and%20runnier%20than%20when%20I%20turned%20the%20mixer%20off.%20%20So,%20I%20turned%20the%20mixer%20back%20on%20for%20a%20few%20minutes,%20but%20it%20probably%20wasn't%20long%20enough.%20%20I%20noticed%20that%20when%20I%20poured%20the%20batter%20into%20the%20pan,%20that%20I%20didn't%20have%20to%20use%20an%20offset%20spatula%20to%20smooth%20the%20top.%20%20It%20seemed%20to%20be%20self-leveling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20mentioned%20in%20an%20earlier%20post%20that%20I'm%20baking%20with%20a%20new%20oven.%20%20One%20of%20the%20things%20I%20love%20about%20it%20is%20the%20digital%20timer.%20%20It's%20so%20nice%20to%20use%20the%20timer%20and%20not%20end%20up%20changing%20the%20time%20on%20the%20clock.%20%20Apparently,%20I%20don't%20have%20all%20of%20the%20buttons%20mastered%20yet.%20%20It%20seems%20that%20when%20I%20meant%20to%20turn%20the%20timer%20off,%20possibly%20after%20the%205%20minutes%20with%20the%20mixer,%20I%20turned%20the%20oven%20off.%20%20At%20the%20end%20of%2025%20minutes,%20%20my%20cake%20didn't%20seem%20to%20have%20risen%20or%20formed%20a%20top%20crust.%20%20I%20discovered%20my%20error%20and%20turned%20the%20oven%20back%20on.%20.%20.%20the%20cake%20has%20just%20come%20out%20of%20the%20oven.%20%20I%20suspect%20that%20it%20should%20be%20higher.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20has%20crossed%20my%20mind%20that%20I%20could%20start%20over%20on%20the%20cake.%20%20I%20know%20that%20many%20of%20my%20HCB%20buddies%20would,%20but%20I%20decided%20against%20it.%20%20It's%20just%20a%20cake,%20and%20saltines%20layered%20with%20the%20orange%20curd,%20orange%20syrup%20and%20chocolate%20ganache%20would%20taste%20fantastic!%20%20(Not%20the%20right%20attitude,%20I%20know.)%20%20%20Instead,%20I'm%20running%20to%20the%20store%20in%20search%20of%20more%20dark%20chocolate.%20%20Hopefully,%20something%20is%20open%20at%20this%20hour.%20.%20.%20made%20it%20just%20in%20time.%20%20They%20locked%20up%20as%20I%20was%20leaving.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20suspect%20that%20if%20all%20had%20gone%20according%20to%20plan,%20the%20cake%20would%20have%20been%20lighter%20and%20more%20tender,%20but%20we%20enjoyed%20it%20nevertheless.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20sister,%20Laura,%20described%20it%20as%20%22pretty%20darn%20yummy!%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUnlike%20my%20other%20blog%20posts,%20as%20part%20of%20the%20Heavenly%20Cake%20Bakers,%20I%20don't%20post%20recipes%20from%20this%20book%20on%20the%20internet.%20%20One%20of%20the%20reasons%20for%20this%20baking%20group%20is%20to%20encourage%20readers%20to%20purchase%20the%20cookbook.%20%20That%20strategy%20worked%20on%20me!%20%20After%20follow%20the%20group's%20baking%20adventures%20for%20a%20couple%20of%20months,%20I%20ordered%20a%20copy%20from%20Amazon.%20%20You%20can%20too.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
