%20jars%20of%20I%20Love%20Peanut%20Butter%E2%80%9Ds%20Dark%20Chocolate%20Dreams.%20That%20stuff%20is%20awesome%E2%80%93no%20dumb%20dog,%20he%E2%80%93%20but%20it%20is%20awesome%20because%20of%20how%20much%20chocolate%20is%20in%20it.%20So%20off%20we%20went%20to%20the%20vet,%20for%20induced%20vomiting,%20charcoal,%20the%20whole%20nine%20yards.%20By%20the%20time%20I%20got%20home%20I%20was%20whupped.%20And%20then%20I%20was%20gone%20again%20all%20day%20today.%20Ack!%20So,%20finally,%20these%20amazing%20refried%20beans%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20I%20mentioned%20before,%20I%20wanted%20refried%20beans%20to%20serve%20with%20the%20chilaquiles%20I%20made%20the%20other%20night.%20I%20very%20purposefully%20went%20looking%20for%20a%20recipe%20that%20would%20remind%20me%20of%20the%20traditional%20beans%20we%20are%20served%20in%20our%20favorite%20Mexican%20restaurants,%20because%20I%20knew%20that%20was%20what%20Sammy%20would%20expect%20(Alex%20was%20not%20home).%20I%20had%20just%20received%20Ivy%20Stark%E2%80%99s%20Dos%20Caminos%20Mexican%20Street%20Food:%20120%20Authentic%20Recipes%20to%20Make%20at%20Home%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Efrom%20the%20publisher,%20after%20enjoying%20Dos%20Caminos%20Tacos:%20100%20Recipes%20for%20Everyone%E2%80%99s%20Favorite%20Mexican%20Street%20Food%20so%20much.%20So%20I%20thought%20I%20might%20find%20something%20there.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESuccess!%20Her%20refried%20beans%20start%20with%20dried%20beans,%20which%20I%20heartily%20approve%20of,%20and%20use%20avocado%20leaves%20and%20bacon%20for%20extra%20flavor.%20I%20used%20my%20own%20recipe%20for%20cooking%20the%20dried%20beans%20(and%20I%20used%20heirloom%20beans%20for%20that%20matter)%20with%20lard,%20onion%20and%20garlic.%20And%20I%20made%20the%20unfortunately%20necessary%20substitution%20of%20anise%20seeds%20(just%20a%20few)%20and%20bay%20leaves%20for%20the%20unavailable%20avocado%20leaves%20and%20feta%20for%20cotija%20cheese.%20%20I%20also%20drizzled%20my%20beans%20with%20Mexican%20crema.%20The%20recipe%20was%20perfect.%20Sammy%20especially%20went%20crazy%E2%80%93so%20crazy%20that,%20as%20I%20mentioned%20before,%20she%20more%20or%20less%20refused%20to%20even%20try%20the%20chilaquiles,%20instead%20eating%20refried%20beans%20the%20whole%20night!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20as%20for%20the%20book%20itself,%20it%20is%20a%20winner.%20The%20assortment%20of%20dishes%20is%20wonderfully%20varied,%20reminding%20us%20that%20in%20other%20countries%20street%20food%20does%20not%20mean%20only%20meats%20cooked%20on%20a%20grill,%20or%20even%20just%20the%20taco%20fillings%20of%20the%20ever%20increasing%20(delightfully%20so)%20taco%20trucks%20in%20this%20country.%20Street%20food%20could%20be%20a%20stew,%20a%20meat%20that%20has%20braised%20the%20entire%20night%20before,%20popsicles,%20corn,%20drinks%E2%80%A6.%20of%20course%20it%20is%20the%20braises%20and%20stews%20that%20I%20am%20most%20attracted%20to,%20and%20will%20return%20to%20as%20the%20weather%20grows%20colder,%20but%20there%20is%20something%20for%20everyone.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20Refried%20Beans%20(Mi%20Frijoles%20Refritos)%20%20%20Recipe%20shared%20by%20permission%20of%20Skyhorse%20Publishing.%20From%20the%20author:%20Lots%20of%20people%20have%20a%20favorite%20refried%20bean%20recipe,%20but%20I%20think%20my%20Dos%20Caminos%20version%20is%20special%20because%20we%20use%20avocado%20leaves%20and%20bacon,%20which%20adds%20a%20smoky%20flavor.%20They%E2%80%99re%20definitely%20better%20than%20what%20comes%20out%20of%20a%20can.%20When%20we%20were%20very%20young%20children,%20one%20of%20the%20first%20foods%20my%20parents%20ordered%20for%20my%20sister%20and%20me%20were%20black%20bean%20tacos%20in%20a%20small%20storefront%20Mexican%20restaurant%20in%20Denver,%20where%20we%20ate%20weekly.%20They%20are%20a%20simple,%20approachable%20food%20for%20any%20age.%20%20Author:%20Ivy%20Stark%20Cuisine:%20Mexican%20%20%20Ingredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20pound%20dry%20black%20or%20pinto%20beans%202%20avocado%20leaves%20(%E2%80%9CResources%E2%80%9D%20chapter%20[has%20suggestions%20of%20places%20to%20buy])%202%20slices%20bacon,%20cut%20crosswise%20into%20%C2%BD%20-inch%20strips%201%20small%20white%20onion,%20diced%202%20cloves%20garlic,%20minced%202%20jalapenos,%20seeds%20and%20membranes%20removed%20if%20desired,%20minced%20%C2%BD%20cup%20lard%20Juice%20of%201%20lime%20Salt%20Crumbled%20Cotija%20cheese,%20to%20garnish%20(optional)%20%20%20Instructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERinse%20the%20beans%20and%20soak%20overnight%20in%20a%20large%20pot%20of%20cold%20water.%20(If%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20time%20to%20soak%20overnight,%20put%20the%20beans%20into%20a%20pot%20of%20water%20to%20cover%20by%20at%20least%202%20inches%20and%20bring%20to%20a%20boil;%20turn%20off%20the%20heat,%20cover,%20and%20let%20sit%20for%201%20hour.)%20The%20following%20day,%20bring%20the%20pot%20of%20beans%20to%20a%20boil,%20add%20the%20avocado%20leaves,%20turn%20the%20heat%20down,%20and%20simmer%20until%20tender,%202%20to%203%20hours.%20In%20a%20large%20skillet,%20cook%20the%20bacon%20over%20mediu
