I fell in love with My Neighbor Totoro the first time I saw it back in the 90’s. It’s charm and cuteness overload have captured the hearts of millions, specially those in Asia.
I’m watching it as I’m typing right now, they have dubbed versions, but the original in Japanese is definitely the way to go.
With just one film, it has grown into a merchandising machine over the past 20+ years. Here in Japan, you can literally find Totoro everything, from chopsticks to bibs. Naturally Ghibli Museum, Mitaka aka Totoro “land” was on my must list for this trip.

%20may%20ring%20a%20bell?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20took%20quite%20a%20bit%20of%20planning%20since%20they%20don%E2%80%99t%20sell%20tickets%20at%20the%20door.%20Advanced%20tickets%20are%20only%20sold%20at%20the%20local%20Lawson%20convenient%20store,%20which%20seemed%20easy%20enough,%20until%20I%20got%20to%20the%20store%20and%20the%20most%20important%20parts%20were%20in%20Japanese!%20Thankfully%20the%20girl%20at%20Lawson%20happen%20to%20speak%20Chinese%20and%20helped%20me%20fill%20out%20my%20name%20(in%20Japanese)%20and%20her%20number%20(I%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20one%20in%20Japan).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20ticket%20was%20more%20than%202%20weeks%20in%20advance,%20so%20you%20might%20want%20to%20get%20them%20before%20coming.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20minute%20I%20entered%20and%20saw%20the%20giant%20Totoro%20I%20was%20smiling%20for%20ear%20to%20ear.%20This%20is%20my%20kind%20of%20%E2%80%9CHappiest%20Place%20on%20Earth%E2%80%9D.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKawaii!!!%20Even%20the%20dust%20bunnies%20underneath!%20Love,%20love,%20love.%20I%20was%20a%20child%20again%E2%80%A6%20*jumping%20up%20and%20down*%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20limit%20the%20amount%20of%20visitors%20per%20day.%20And%20no%20photos%20inside%20the%20building.%20I%20guess%20for%20those%20cute%20Totoro%20effects,%20the%20different%20animations%20and%20artist%20studio,%20you%E2%80%99ll%20have%20go%20see%20for%20yourself.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20main%20entrance%20has%20Totoro%20stain%20glass%20windows.%20I%20was%20told%20no%20photos%20after%20I%20snapped%20these%20two.%20The%20funny%20thing%20is%20the%20colors%20are%20only%20seen%20from%20the%20inside,%20there%E2%80%99s%20no%20pigment%20on%20the%20outside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20whole%20space%20is%20covered%20in%20green.%20Really%20dreamy%20and%20relaxing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEverywhere%20I%20looked,%20it%20seem%20to%20come%20out%20of%20a%20story%20book.%20I%20though%20Instagram%20would%20capture%20the%20ambiance%20best%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBoth%20the%20young%20and%20old%20had%20grins%20on%20their%20faces.%20Fascinated%20by%20little%20details%20around%20the%20garden%20as%20well%20as%20the%20cool%20animation%20rooms.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20giant%20robot%20on%20the%20roof.%20Lapuda%20from%20Castle%20in%20the%20Sky.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20dust%20bunnies/puffs%20from%20Totoro%20everywhere.%20Too%20cute!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20movie%20ticket%20was%20an%20animated%20film%20strip.%20As%20you%20walked%20through%20the%20different%20areas%20of%20the%20museum,%20you%20could%20watch%20it%20on%20a%20little%20projector.%20Quite%20neat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELoved%20discovering%20every%20corner%20of%20the%20outdoor%20area.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOld%20school%20soda%20pops%20for%20a%20really%20hot%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELunch%20at%20the%20Straw%20Hat%20Cafe%20was%20about%201hr%20wait%20outdoors,%20in%20the%20summer%20heat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFriendly%20and%20cool%20(thank%20God%20for%20AC,%20I%20was%20melting%20away),%20I%20finally%20had%20my%20table%20for%20one%20overlooking%20the%20little%20garden%20area.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20menu%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20unique%20per%20se,%20but%20they%20suggest%20fresh%20ingredients%20and%20farm%20to%20table.%20I%20ordered%20their%20version%20of%20my%20beloved%20Katsu%20Curry.%20Rice%20and%20grains%20with%20a%20sweeter%20more%20tomato%20tasting%20curry.%20Fried%20pork%20cutlet.%20Nothing%20out%20of%20this%20world,%20but%20it%20did%20the%20job%20and%20I%20was%20hungry.%20Plus,%20the%20plate%20was%20super%20adorable.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20scrapping%20the%20plate%20so%20I%20could%20see%20the%20full%20design.%20I%20later%20found%20the%20plate%20set%20at%20the%20gift%20shop.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStraw%20hat%20latte%20made%20me%20smile%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20meal.%20It%20was%20hot%20outside%20but%20I%20just%20had%20to%20order%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%E2%80%99s%20a%20giant%20cat%20bus%20for%20kids%20to%20jump%20on,%20no%20fair!%20I%20would%20of%20loved%20to%20be%20on%20that%20giant%20plush,%20it%20occupied%20a%20whole%20room!%20Again,%20no%20photos%20allowed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99m%20not%20usually%20a%20sucker%20for%20souvenirs,%20but%20how%20could%20I%20resist%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECame%20home%20with%20a%20mug,%20two%20of%20the%20cutest%20towels,%20magnets%20(I%20collect%20magnets%20from%20everywhere%20I%20go).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20this%20cute%20keychain!%20Love%20the%20ramen%20bowl,%20Totoro%20and%20my%20favorite%20taiyaki.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEven%20the%20bus%20stop%20is%20cute.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOn%20my%20way%20back%20after%20a%20fun%20day,%20I%20took%20their%20designated%20bus%20to%20the%20train%20station.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGhibli%20Museum%20is%20highly%20recommended%20for%20Totoro%20and%20animation%20fans.%20A%20perfect%20day%20to%20spend%20away%20from%20the%20city,%20in%20a%20sweet%20fantasy%20land.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewww.ghibli-museum.jp/en%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20get%20tickets%20and%20for%20more%20information%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWatch%20my%20Neighbor%20Totoro%20online%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESaw%20this%20girl%20by%20the%20train%20station,%20thought%20she%20jumped%20out%20of%20the%20animated%20films%E2%
