%20was%20born%20and%20raised%20in%20Chesterfield,%20we%20started%20looking%20for%20names%20we%20recognized.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%E2%80%99ve%20been%20flipping%20through%20the%20book%20here%20and%20there%20(yep,%20that%E2%80%99s%20right,%20my%20husband%20was%20the%20high%20bidder%20and%20we%20now%20own%20it%20as%20well%20as%20the%20other%20two%20editions),%20and%20while%20my%20parents%20were%20out%20here%20visiting,%20I%20thought%20it%20would%20be%20fun%20to%20try%20a%20couple%20of%20the%20recipes%20from%20the%20book,%20just%20as%20a%20kind%20of%20throwback%20to%20days%20gone%20by.%20Many%20of%20the%20recipes%20have%20very%20little%20instruction,%20and%20even%20some%20questionable%20ingredients,%20so%20picking%20one%20was%20a%20challenge.%20One%20recipe%20jumped%20out%20at%20my%20mom%20as%20she%20was%20leafing%20through%20the%20pages.%20Amber%20Pie.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20ask%20you%20%E2%80%93%20what%20exactly%20makes%20a%20pie%20%E2%80%9Camber%E2%80%9D?%20Well,%20the%20ingredient%20list%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20much%20help.%20It%20called%20for%201%20%C2%BD%20cups%20jam%20(what%20kind,%20you%20may%20ask?%20I%20chose%20Strawberry,%20simply%20because%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20want%20to%20waste%20my%20jar%20of%20fig%20if%20the%20recipe%20went%20badly.),%201%20%C2%BD%20cups%20sour%20cream,%201%20cup%20sugar,%202%20TB%20flour%20and%202%20eggs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20all%20together.%20Take%20one%20crock%20of%20cream%20and%20whip.%20Pour%20on%20top%20of%20pie%20in%20unbaked%20shell.%20Makes%20enough%20for%20two%20pies.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI.%20Kid.%20You.%20Not.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDo%20you%20bake%20it?%20If%20so,%20how%20long?%20At%20what%20temperature?%20You%20don%E2%80%99t%20really%20put%20the%20whipped%20cream%20on%20before%20baking,%20right?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20using%20our%20common%20sense%20(we%20hoped),%20we%20mixed%20the%20four%20pie%20ingredients%20together%20(I%20halved%20the%20recipe%20to%20make%20one%20pie),%20poured%20it%20into%20an%20unbaked%20crust%20(yes,%20I%20cheated%20and%20used%20a%20frozen%20one%20from%20the%20store),%20and%20baked%20it%20in%20a%20moderate%20oven%20(350),%20hopefully%20until%20the%20filling%20%E2%80%9Cset%E2%80%9D,%20and,%20we%20waited.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20about%2030%20minutes,%20the%20filling%20was%20still%20liquid.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20forty%20minutes,%20it%20was%20boiling.%20Spewing%20fat%20little%20bubbles%20up%20from%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20pie.%20But%20the%20crust%20was%20definitely%20not%20done.%20Hmmm....%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETen%20minutes%20later,%20it%20was%20a%20puffing%20and%20heaving%20mass%20of%20phlegmy%20looking%20curdles%20that%20reminded%20me%20of%20a%20festering%20cesspool.%20I%20was%20mildly%20disgusted%20and%20somewhat%20horrified.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFinally,%20at%20an%20hour%20and%20ten%20minutes,%20there%20was%20a%20distinct%20change%20that%20had%20taken%20place,%20the%20puffing%20had%20subsided%20and%20it%20appeared%20to%20be%20a%20consistently%20gelled%20mass,%20apart%20from%20a%20bit%20around%20the%20edges%20that%20was%20caramelizing%20aggressively.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20removed%20the%20pie%20from%20the%20oven%20and%20allowed%20it%20to%20cool.%20After%20lunch,%20we%20decided%20to%20brave%20the%20beast.%20Cutting%20small%20slices%20from%20the%20pie,%20we%20passed%20them%20around%20the%20table,%20daring%20each%20other%20to%20take%20a%20bite.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20it%20turns%20out,%20it%20was....not%20bad.%20It%20tasted%20only%20vaguely%20of%20strawberry,%20but%20held%20a%20strong%20resemblance%20to%20a%20curd,%20in%20texture.%20It%20was%20intensely%20sweet,%20and%20the%20whipped%20cream%20helped%20cut%20the%20sugar%20a%20bit.%20All%20in%20all,%20not%20a%20bad%20result,%20if%20a%20bit%20disturbing%20in%20the%20process.%20I%20hope%20to%20try%20a%20few%20more%20obscure%20choices%20over%20the%20next%20month%20or%20so,%20and%20bring%20a%20taste%20of%20historic%20Illinois%20to%20my%20blog!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh,%20and%20just%20to%20salvage%20our%20sense%20of%20the%20present,%20we%20also%20made%20the%20Snowball%20Cake%20featured%20on%20the%20cover%20of%20the%20last%20Kraft%20Foods%20magazine.%20It%20was%20easy%20to%20make%20and%20turned%20out%20great!%20A%20creamy,%20coconut-y%20confection%20that%20my%20co-workers%20were%20happy%20to%20help%20me%20get%20rid%20of%20yesterday.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESnowball%20Cake%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20pkg.%20(2-layer%20size)%20devil's%20food%20cake%20mix%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHEAT%20oven%20to%20350%C2%BAF.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPREPARE%20cake%20batter,%20in%202-1/2-qt.%20ovenproof%20bowl,%20as%20directed%20on%20package;%20scrape%20side%20of%20bowl.%20Beat%20cream%20cheese,%20egg%20and%20granulated%20sugar%20until%20well%20blended;%20spoon%20into%20center%20of%20batter%20in%20bowl.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBAKE%201%20hour%205%20min.%20or%20until%20toothpick%20inserted%20in%20center%20comes%20out%20clean.%20Cool%20cake%20in%20bowl%2010%20min.%20Loosen%20cake%20from%20bowl%20with%20knife;%20invert%20onto%20wire%20rack.%20Remove%20bowl.%20Cool%20cake%20completely.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMEANWHILE,%20beat%20dry%20pudding%20mix,%20powdered%20sugar%20and%20milk%20in%20medium%20bowl%20with%20whisk%202%20min.%20Stir%20in%20COOL%20WHIP.%20Refrigerate%20until%20ready%20to%20use.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPLACE%20cake%20on%20plate;%20frost%20with%20pudding%20mixture.%20Cover%20with%20coconut.%20Keep%20refrigerated.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
