%20I%20tend%20to%20do%20most%20of%20my%20food%20shopping%20at%20the%20hometown%20grocer.%20The%20bill%20is%20generally%20a%20little%20higher,%20but%20I%20am%20a%20believer%20in%20supporting%20the%20little%20guy%20and,%20frankly,%20the%20meat%20selection%20is%20much%20better.%20I%20treat%20them%20well,%20and%20they%20return%20the%20favor%20by%20getting%20me%20certain%20things%20I%20ask%20for.%20(For%20example,%20the%20guy%20who%20does%20the%20liquor%20ordering%20just%20got%20me%20a%20case%20of%20a%20nice%20little%20moscato%20I%20asked%20him%20to%20get%20for%20me.%20He%20also%20does%20his%20best%20to%20keep%20the%20Schlafly%20seasonal%20beers%20in%20stock%20because%20he%20knows%20I%20love%20them.%20Okay,%20maybe%20that%E2%80%99s%20not%20the%20only%20reason,%20but%20I%20still%20appreciate%20it.%20Love%20that%20guy.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBack%20to%20the%20point%20of%20my%20story.%20Every%20now%20and%20then,%20they%20surprise%20me%20(and%20I%20make%20sure%20I%20let%20them%20know%20how%20pleased%20I%20am).%20Just%20last%20month,%20I%20was%20tickled%20to%20find%20a%20batch%20of%20pork%20neck%20bones%20in%20the%20meat%20section.%20Occasionally%20I%20even%20run%20across%20something%20I%E2%80%99ve%20never%20tried%20before.%20It%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20matter.%20If%20its%20something%20different,%20I%20make%20a%20point%20of%20buying%20some%20and%20finding%20something%20to%20make%20with%20it,%20just%20to%20show%20my%20appreciation%20for%20them%20trying%20to%20bring%20variety%20in.%20Well,%20recently%20I%20had%20another%20find.%20Beef%20Short%20Ribs.%20Something%20fairly%20mainstream%20in%20the%20culinary%20world,%20and%20yet,%20I%E2%80%99d%20never%20made%20them.%20Sometimes%20the%20most%20basic%20things%20elude%20me%20just%20from%20lack%20of%20exposure.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20no%20more!%20I%20snapped%20up%20three%20packages%20of%20those%20gorgeous%20ribs%20and%20took%20them%20home%20to%20reside%20in%20my%20freezer%20while%20I%20came%20up%20with%20a%20good%20recipe.%20I%20originally%20intended%20to%20grill%20them,%20but%20in%20the%20process%20of%20researching%20a%20recipe,%20I%20decided%20it%20was%20too%20risky.%20It%20seemed%20slow%20roasting%20was%20a%20safer%20bet,%20at%20least%20for%20my%20first%20time%20out,%20especially%20since%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20a%20lot%20of%20experience%20with%20my%20grill%20yet.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20so,%20after%20looking%20at%20quite%20a%20few%20sites,%20I%20came%20up%20with%20this%20recipe%20that%20sounded%20lovely.%20Instead%20of%20just%20slow%20roasting,%20it%20begins%20with%20putting%20the%20ribs%20under%20the%20broiler,%20helping%20give%20the%20meat%20a%20nice%20crust.%20I%20like%20the%20idea%20of%20that%20because%20so%20often%20meats%20that%20are%20slow%20roasted%20(or%20cooked%20in%20the%20crock%20pot),%20though%20they%20can%20be%20wonderfully%20flavorful%20and%20tender,%20just%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20the%20texture%20that%20I%20look%20for%20in%20a%20piece%20of%20meat.%20I%20like%20that%20caramelization,%20the%20crust....%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20don%E2%80%99t%20think%20I%20could%20have%20found%20a%20better%20place%20to%20start.%20This%20recipe%20was%20super%20easy,%20beginning%20with%20seasoning%20the%20meat%20and%20broiling%20it%20for%2010%20minutes,%20then%20putting%20it%20in%20the%20slow%20cooker%20and%20topping%20it%20with%20an%20Asian%20sauce%20to%20cook%20while%20I%20was%20at%20work%20yesterday.%20When%20I%20opened%20the%20front%20door%20last%20night,%20I%20was%20overwhelmed%20by%20the%20fragrant%20cloud%20that%20hit%20me%20right%20in%20the%20face.%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20get%20to%20the%20cooker%20fast%20enough,%20and%20when%20I%20lifted%20the%20lid?%20Well,%20I%20may%20or%20may%20not%20have%20been%20drooling....%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20recipe%20finishes%20by%20adding%20some%20aromatics%20to%20the%20liquids%20from%20the%20cooker,%20cooking%20it%20down%20a%20bit%20and%20serving%20the%20sauce%20over%20the%20super%20tender%20ribs.%20I%20could%20have%20taken%20a%20bath%20in%20that%20sauce.%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20think%20the%20hubs%20would%20have%20minded,%20either,%20after%20the%20way%20I%20saw%20him%20cleaning%20his%20plate.%20The%20meat%20was%20extremely%20moist%20and%20tender,%20and%20peeled%20away%20from%20the%20bone%20easily%20without%20just%20falling%20apart.%20Fabulous.%20Just%20fabulous.%20This%20one%20will%20be%20going%20in%20the%20official%20recipe%20card%20box%20for%20a%20repeat%20performance%20the%20next%20time%20I%20see%20short%20ribs%20at%20the%20grocery%20store.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThai%20Beef%20Short%20Ribs%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20a%20broiler%20on%20high.%20Season%20the%20meaty%20parts%20of%20the%20short%20ribs%20with%20salt%20and%20pepper%20and%20set%20bone-side%20down%20on%20an%20oven%20tray.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpray%20with%20oil%20and%20broil%20until%20the%20meaty%20parts%20are%20browned%20(about%2010%20minutes).Transfer%20to%20a%205-6%20quart%20slow%20cooker.%20Mix%20together%20the%20garlic,%20ginger,%20hoisin,%20vinegar,%20fish%20sauce,%20honey,%20soy%20sauce,%20and%20lime%20juice%20and%20zest%20in%20a%20small%20bowl,%20and%20pour%20over%20the%20short%20ribs.%20Cover%20the%20slow%20cooker%20and%20cook%20until%20tender,%20about%203-4%20hours%20on%20high%20or%206-8%20hours%20on%20low.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETransfer%20the%20ribs%20to%20a%20platter.%20Skim%20the%20fat%20from%20the%20liquid,%20then%20add%20the%20jalapeno,%20scallions,%20and%20cilantro%20and%20cook%20on%20high%20for%205%20minutes.%20Spoon%20the%20sauce%20over%20the%20meat%20and%20serve.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
