Рецепт Tequila-Grapefruit Cocktails

The goal for today was to make Tequila-Lime-Coconut Macaroon Bars that are in Southern Living Magazine. That was before I decided that it was time to clean the deck, and I mean clean the deck. I pressure-washed all the crud out from between the boards and then got on my hands and knees with a scrub brush and bleach-water and scrubbed the whole thing. By the time I was done with that, standing in the kitchen and baking was the farthest thing from my mind.

Drinking, however, that was another matter. I was even able to stick with the tequila theme since Fine Cooking has a recipe in their "Brunch in the Kitchen" section for Tequila-Grapefruit Cocktails. I had planned on making this, so I was prepared with the grapefruit-infused tequila. I just didn't plan to make it today. But, as my knees, back and elbows will currently attest, this is the perfect day for this drink.

There was one ingredient that I couldn't find; St. Germain elderflower liqueur. It's kind of sad how often I have to say that I can't find an ingredient in this magazine. A few sites I read said that other fruity liqueurs could be substituted (I had to use Chambord), but further research on St. Germain's makes me think that there just is no substitute and that ingredient is absolutely required for this drink to taste the way it should. After what I've read, I really need to find some St. Germain elderflower liqueur somewhere (even though it costs $30/bottle). Really.

That paragraph serves as my disclaimer. Just so you know.

In order to make this I squeezed two grapefruits and two limes so I'd have a quarter cup of grapefruit juice and three tablespoons of lime juice. I then added that, the tequila and Chambord to a shaker filled with ice. I shook it like a pro (which I definitely am not) and then poured some (it makes enough for two servings) into an ice-filled glass, topped it off with some club soda and voila, I was ready to drink.

I hated it. I'm sorry to say that, but it was too harsh and needed something more to sweeten it up. I ended up dumping my glass down the drain. But, I didn't give up. I know that St. Germain elderflower liqueur has some cane sugar added so I did the best I had and added a little of my ginger simple syrup and tasted again.

Nirvana. Seriously. Adding the bit of sweetness transported the drink into something fantastic. While I don't see this as a brunch drink (though I don't much see any drinking before 5 pm as something I care to do), it's definitely a drink I'll keep around. It's fresh tasting, tart and delicious.

I think I have enough to make one more just to make sure (you deserve the very best after all).

  • 4 fl. oz. (1/2 cup) grapefruit-infused silver (blanco) tequila (see note below), preferably Partida (or Don Julio Blanco or El Mejor)
  • 2 fl. oz. (1/4 cup) fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1-1/2 fl. oz. (3 tablespoons) St-Germain elderflower liqueur
  • 1 fl. oz. (2 tablespoons) fresh lime juice
  • Club soda
  • Grapefruit twists or lime wedges, for garnish

  1. Put the tequila, grapefruit juice, St-Germain, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Cover and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Strain into 2 double old fashioned glasses filled with fresh ice, and top with a splash of club soda. Garnish with a twist or a wedge of lime.
  2. Note: To make the grapefruit-infused tequila, shave the zest from 2 grapefruits with a vegetable peeler. Add the zest to a 750-ml bottle of silver tequila (pour off enough tequila to make room for the zest). Chill in the refrigerator for at least 3 days and up to 2 weeks. Remove the zest after 2 weeks. The tequila will keep indefinitely once the zest is removed.
