Recently, I learned that a college friend, Matt Kitchen, started Tea Setter. His venture is pretty darn cool and something I think you all would love, so I wanted to publish a little review about it. But, since I’m not an expert when it comes to drinking tea, I decided to turn to my brother-in-law who could probably add “tea expert” to his resume since he’s researched it so much.

.%20That%E2%80%99s%20the%20only%20thing%20that%20came%20to%20mind.%20If%20she%20had%20gone%20to%20France%20or%20Germany%20I%20would%20have%20asked%20for%20wine.%20But%20she%20was%20going%20to%20China.%20Pu%E2%80%99erh%20is%20China%E2%80%99s%20version%20of%20fine%20wine:%20%20it%20is%20fermented,%20comes%20in%20many%20varieties,%20can%20be%20lower%20priced%20or%20very%20expensive,%20its%20labels%20often%20detail%20distinct%20geographical%20regions,%20and%20it%20can%20age%20a%20very%20long%20time.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20of%20the%20problems%20with%20having%20a%20fondness%20for%20Pu%E2%80%99erh%20right%20now%20is%20that,%20unlike%20European%20wine,%20there%20is%20no%20American%20apparatus%20currently%20in%20place%20for%20selecting%20the%20right%20quality%20and%20flavor%20profile%20you%20want.%20And%20yes,%20it%20matters%20immensely.%20In%20some%20cases%20(as%20my%20wife%20likes%20to%20say)%20the%20%E2%80%9Cpoo%E2%80%9D%20in%20%E2%80%9Cpoo-air%E2%80%9D%20tends%20to%20be%20emphasized.%20Some%20you%E2%80%99ll%20hate.%20Others%20will%20taste%20like%20nothing%20else%20in%20the%20world.%20When%20we%20lived%20in%20Madison,%20WI%20a%20tea%20store%20owner%20there%20helped%20me%20find%20exactly%20what%20I%20wanted.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20I%E2%80%99m%20in%20Boise,%20ID%20and%20haven%E2%80%99t%20yet%20found%20a%20helpful%20substitute.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20where%20websites%20such%20as%20Tea%20Setter%20come%20into%20play.%20Tea%20Setter%20specializes%20in%20Chinese%20tea,%20both%20Pu%E2%80%99erh%20and%20Oolong.%20And%20because%20the%20site%20specializes%20in%20these%20teas,%20the%20selection%20is%20more%20curated.%20The%20last%20time%20I%20tried%20a%20few%20Oolongs%20I%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20crazy%20about%20it,%20but%20two%20of%20the%20Oolongs%20from%20Tea%20Setter%E2%80%99s%20Deluxe%20Tea%20Starter%20were%20so%20nice%20that%20I%20wanted%20to%20try%20more.%20One%20of%20the%20Pu%E2%80%99erhs%20was%20perhaps%20the%20most%20pleasant%20of%20the%20%20%E2%80%9Ccooked%E2%80%9D%20style%20I%E2%80%99ve%20ever%20had.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhat%20I%20appreciated%20most%20about%20the%20start%20set,%20however,%20was%20how%20simple%20and%20complete%20it%20made%20the%20process%20for%20enjoying%20these%20more%20specialized%20teas.%20Both%20Pu%E2%80%99erh%20and%20Oolong%20benefit%20from%20steeping%20and%20drinking%20in%20a%20traditional%20Chinese%20manner,%20which%20sounds%20intimidating%20at%20first;%20but%20the%20set%20includes%20literally%20everything%20you%E2%80%99ll%20ever%20need:%20%20a%20teapot,%20gaiwan%20(Chinese%20steeper),%20a%20metal%20strainer,%20two%20tea%20cups,%20and%20bamboo%20tray%E2%80%93and%20six%208%20gram%20sample%20packs%20of%20Pu%E2%80%99erh%20and%20Oolong%20to%20get%20things%20started.%20I%20had%20accrued%20all%20of%20these%20items%20over%20the%20past%20few%20years,%20but%20the%20set%E2%80%99s%20simplicity%20and%20harmonious%20setup%20on%20a%20single%20tray%20made%20it%20extremely%20convenient.%20After%20experimenting%20with%20the%20setup%20for%20a%20few%20weeks%20I%20found%20myself%20favoring%20the%20tray%20and%20its%20apparatuses%20over%20my%20own,%20simply%20because%20it%20made%20things%20very%20easy%20and%20convenient.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20picture%20above%20shows%20the%20first%20pour%20of%20the%20Ethical%20Agriculture%E2%80%99s%20Wild%20Grown%20Pu-erh.%20I%20let%20it%20steep%20about%2020%20seconds%20(a%20first%20Chinese%20steep%20is%20around%2015%20seconds).%20As%20you%20can%20see,%20Pu%E2%80%99erh%20will%20darken%20a%20cup%20rather%20quickly%20even%20though%20it%20is%20technically%20a%20green%20tea.%20Short%20steeps%20bring%20out%20the%20sweeter%20notes.%20This%20one%20was%20floral%20with%20a%20hint%20of%20sweetness,%20almost%20like%20honeysuckle.%20Most%20importantly%20for%20me,%20it%20was%20not%20overwhelmed%20by%20that%20intense%20smoky%20aftertaste%20that%20overwhelms%20some%20cooked%20Pu%E2%80%99erhs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20the%20real%20surprise%20for%20me%20was%20the%20Iron%20Goddess%20High%20Grade%20Oolong.%20I%20steeped%20it%20the%20same%20as%20the%20Pu%E2%80%99erhs,%20only%20at%20a%20slightly%20lower%20temperature,%20and%20with%20each%20additional%20steep%20it%20became%20fuller%20and%20sweeter%20in%20profile,%20both%20subtle%20and%20very%20pleasant%20to%20drink.%20This%20was%20the%20Oolong%20that%20made%20me%20realize%20I%20had%20not%20explored%20this%20style%20enough.%20It%20pours%20almost%20like%20a%20white%20tea,%20but%20has%20a%20fuller%20body%20and%20(for%20me%20at%20least)%20more%20flavor.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThanks,%20Joel,%20for%20guest%20posting%20and%20sharing%20your%20experience%20with%20Tea%20Setter!%20%20So%20glad%20you%20enjoyed%20it!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpecial%20Offer%20for%20Seeded%20at%20the%20Table%20Readers:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20can%20purchase%20this%20same%20Deluxe%20Starter%20Tea%20Set%20for%20$10%20off%20the%20original%20price,%20plus%20free%20shipping%20by%20using%20coupon%20code%20SeededSet10%20at%20checkout.%20%20And,%20receive%2010%25%20off%20any%20of%20the%20tea%20at%20TeaSetter.com%20using%20coupon%20code
