%20who%20get%20together%20and%20learn%20about%20food%20by%20inviting%20chefs%20and%20other%20food-obsessed%20freaks%20like%20me%20to%20come%20to%20the%20beautiful%20town%20of%20Boquete,%20near%20the%20Costa%20Rican%20border%20and%20cook.%20I%20am%20doing%20an%20evening%20of%20small%20plates%20highlighting%20recipes%20from%20several%20legendary%20Hollywood%20restaurants.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20I%20said,%20today%20my%20focus%20is%20on%20the%20world%20famous%20Cocoanut%20Grove,%20which%20flat%20out%20epitomizes%20the%20symbiotic%20relationships%20that%20certain%20restaurants%20have%20with%20the%20Hollywood%20elite.%20Never%20before%20and%20never%20again%20would%20style%20and%20substance%20meet%20so%20squarely%20with%20the%20fantasy%20elements%20that%20defined%20Hollywood%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%E2%84%A2s%20Golden%20Age.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20its%20day%20The%20Cocoanut%20Grove%20was%20filled%20to%20the%20tippy-top%20of%20its%20palm%20frond%20filled%20rafters%20with%20beautiful%20people%20decked%20out%20in%20their%20very%20finest.%20It%20opened%20in%20the%20early%201920s,%20at%20a%20time%20when%20the%20stars%20of%20Hollywood%20were%20beginning%20to%20permanently%20define%20glamor%20for%20the%20entire%20world.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20speaking%20of%20glamor%20the%20room%20itself%20was%20as%20elaborate%20as%20any%20Hollywood%20movie%20set.%20In%20fact%20the%20room%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%E2%84%A2s%20most%20famous%20features%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%E2%80%9C%20towering%20artificial%20palm%20trees%20with%20paper%20mache%20cocoanuts%20and%20stuffed%20monkeys%20actually%20came%20from%20the%20set%20of%20the%20Valentino%20movie%20The%20Sheik.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20party%20at%20The%20Grove%20lasted%20through%20the%201930s%20and%201940s.%20Live%20radio%20broadcasts%20from%20the%20era%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%E2%84%A2s%20biggest%20Big%20Bands%20originated%20right%20on%20the%20dance%20floor%20of%20this%20night-club.%20The%20Academy%20Awards%20took%20advantage%20of%20the%20grand%20staircase%20designed%20for%20the%20sole%20purpose%20of%20grand%20entrances%20and%20spent%206%20years%20there%20as%20well%20from%201930%20to%201936.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20easily%20the%20most%20important%20meeting%20place%20in%20a%20town%20filling%20up%20with%20more%20and%20more%20hot%20spots.%20It%20become%20the%20place%20to%20be%20on%20Tuesday%20nights%20when%20stars%20like%20Charlie%20Chaplin,%20Carole%20Lombard,%20Claudette%20Colbert,%20James%20Cagny,%20Jack%20Benny%20and%20Dorothy%20Lamour%20hosted%20extravagant%20dinners%20for%20their%20friends.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20entertainment%20was%20always%20first%20rate%20with%20talent%20like%20Fanny%20Brice,%20WC%20Fields,%20Nat%20King%20Cole,%20and%20Judy%20Garland%20performing%20nightly.%20Who%20better%20to%20keep%20the%20elite%20entertained%20than%20well...%20the%20elite!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20room%20was%20modernized%20in%20the%201950s%20and%20never%20regained%20the%20allure%20of%20its%20early%20days.%20The%20mid-Wilshire%20neighborhood%20began%20to%20fall%20out%20of%20fashion%20and%20then%20on%20June%205,%201968%20a%20tragedy%20altered%20the%20history%20of%20America%20and%20sealed%20the%20fate%20of%20this%20historic%20nightclub.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%201970s%20saw%20Sammy%20Davis%20Jr.%20attempt%20to%20remake%20the%20place%20with%20top%20talent%20like%20Sonny%20and%20Cher%20and%20Diana%20Ross.%20But%20sometimes%20it%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%E2%84%A2s%20impossible%20to%20recapture%20magic.%20The%20hotel%20limped%20along%20until%201989%20when%20it%20closed%20for%20good.%20Donald%20Trump%20bought%20the%20building%20and%20the%20lands%20around%20it%20but%20has%20since%20sold%20it%20to%20the%20Los%20Angeles%20school%20board.%20Frankly%20I%20have%20been%20so%20de-moralized%20by%20the%20long%20slow%20demise%20of%20the%20place%20that%20I%20have%20not%20paid%20much%20attention%20to%20what%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%E2%84%A2s%20going%20on%20now.%20Los%20Angeles%20can%20be%20cruel%20to%20its%20landmarks.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20I%20can%20imagine%20the%20day%20when%20the%20chicest%20of%20folks%20would%20meet%20at%20the%20bar%20under%20the%20palm%20trees%20and%20order%20the%20Cocoanut%20Grove%20Signature%20Cocktail%20of%20gin%20with%20lime,%20grenadine%20and%20maraschino%20liqueur%20completely%20oblivious%20of%20the%20hangover%20to%20come.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EShake%20all%20the%20ingredients%20together%20with%20crushed%20ice.%20Strain%20into%20a%20cocktail%20glass,%20and%20serve%20with%20a%20lime%20wedge%20for%20garnish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESERIOUS%20FUN%20FOOD%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGreg%20Henry%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESippitySup%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
