Sweet Potato Soup – with a touch of maple.
With the Thanksgiving weekend coming up for our American friends, I thought of this sweet potato soup as a great starter course for Turkey Day. It was the perfect time for me to try a new pureed soup because Sears Canada had just asked me to try out their new KenmorePro Blender and offered to sponsor a giveaway to one of our lucky readers; more about that a little later.
With the growing popularity of health drinks and smoothies in the past few years, we’ve also seen some new blender models enter the market to appeal to this new trend. Some of them come with a hefty price tag for the level of power and performance customers were beginning to demand. One of the things that prompted me to want to try out the new KenmorePro blender was the much lower retail price of $149.97. I definitely was curious to see how the KenmorePro by Sears Canada performed compared to others I’d tried.
In my testing, it performed quite well indeed. It crushed ice easily, one of the things essential to good slushie and smoothie making. The pulse feature roughly chopped the base vegetables for my soup before they were sautéed which saves a little time in the kitchen. As for the soup itself when it was cooked, the KenmorePro whizzed it into silky smooth perfection, as good or better than any blender I’ve tried.
Some of the things I like about it in particular were:
the pulse button is well designed and has a very good sturdy feel to it, making it responsive and easy to use. The best pulse button I’ve seen so far.
the spout on the jug seems well designed; they often re not on other blenders. The soup poured smoothly back into the pot for reheating without any messy splashing.
the power control was smooth and responsive. There are no click buttons here, just a power dial that lets you fine tune the level of speed and power you need.
Overall, I think the KenmorePro Blender gives you a lot for your money at this price point. If your old blender frustrates you with sticky buttons or you’re looking for something with more power and control, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
The Sweet Potato Soup came out beautifully silly smooth. I garnished it with a dollop of low fat yogurt and a pew toasted pecans for a Thanksgiving appetizer to remember or a delicious, healthy comfort food soup at any time. You’ll love it.

Author: Barry C. Parsons Recipe type: Soup Serves: up to 6 servings Ingredients 3 large sweet potatoes, enough to make about 3 cups mashed sweet potato ½ large red onion, diced fine 2 cloves garlic minced 3 tbsp line oil 2 carrots diced small 1 celery stalk chopped small 6 cups vegetable stock (low sodium) salt to season to taste 2 tsp powdered ginger 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg ½ tsp white pepper 3 tbsp maple syrup Instructions Wash the sweet potatoes and wrap them in aluminum foil. Bake in a 350 degree F oven for about an hour or until they are fork tender at the centre. When they've cooled down for a few minutes remove the skins and roughly mash the potatoes. Set aside. In a medium saucepan sized saucepan or dutch oven, add the olive oil over medium heat and sauté the onions, garlic, carrots and celery until the onions soften but do not brown. Add all of the remaining ingredients and simmer slowly over low heat for about 20 minutes or until the carrots are fully cooked. Transfer the soup to a blender, making sure that the cover is loose or the cover is vented to let steam escape. Start the blender on lowest speed and then gradually increase the speed until the soup is completely smooth. Return the soup to the pot and simmer until your preferred consistency is achieved, stirring often. You can always thin the soup with additional stock or water if it gets too thick. Serve with a garnish of a dollop of low fat yogurt and a few chopped toasted pecans. 3.4.3177 Rock Recipes is very pleased to have Sears Canada as the sponsor of this recipe post.
