Did you know it’s National Baking Week? Most of the time, when I know I have to bake something, I feel nothing but a sense of dread. As I’ve said before, I’m not much of a baker – anything that requires even just a little bit of finesse… well, it just isn’t really for me.
That’s why I love these crumble cakes so much. They look so impressive, they taste amazing, and they are so, so easy to make. I know the non-bakers amongst you are raising an eyebrow at me right now, but honestly – it’s nearly impossible to muck these things up.

,%20which%20was%20a%20recipe%20I%20found%20in%20my%20late%20Granny%E2%80%99s%20hand-written%20recipe%20book.%20Since%20it%E2%80%99s%20such%20a%20special%20recipe%20I%20thought%20it%20would%20be%20nice%20to%20give%20it%20a%20new%20lease%20of%20life%20as%20this%20caramel%20pear%20crumble%20cake,%20perfect%20to%20see%20you%20through%20the%20cold%20months%20(alllll%20those%20cold%20months%20we%20have%20ahead%20of%20us).%20This%20time%20I%20used%20wholemeal%20flour%20to%20give%20it%20a%20really%20hearty,%20autumnal%20feel.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20other%20words,%20it%E2%80%99s%20more%20like%20a%20crumble%20mixture%20(hence%20the%20name!).%20Rather%20than%20having%20to%20pour%20the%20mixture%20into%20your%20cake%20tin%20(inevitably%20ending%20up%20with%20it%20spilling%20out%20the%20bottom%20where%20the%20springform%20tin%20hasn%E2%80%99t%20been%20put%20together%20properly),%20you%20just%20press%20the%20mixture%20in.%20And%20as%20you%20can%20see,%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20even%20need%20to%20be%20careful%20about%20not%20having%20lumps%20%E2%80%93%20even%20if%20you%E2%80%99re%20as%20ham-fisted%20as%20I%20am,%20you%E2%80%99ll%20end%20up%20with%20a%20great%20cake.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen,%20load%20your%20cake%20up%20with%20spiced%20pears,%20get%20it%20nice%20and%20trashy%20with%20some%20luscious%20caramel%20sauce,%20and%20top%20it%20with%20the%20remaining%20crumble%20mixture.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%E2%80%99s%20pretty%20magical%20really,%20the%20mixture%20on%20the%20bottom%20becomes%20quite%20dense%20and%20pastry-like%20where%20it%E2%80%99s%20pressed%20into%20the%20tin,%20whereas%20the%20stuff%20on%20top%20stays%20nice%20and%20loose%20and%20crumbly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServed%20with%20a%20bit%20of%20custard%20and%20an%20extra%20drizzle%20of%20caramel%20sauce,%20it%20makes%20an%20amazing%20dessert.%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20imagine%20anyone%20turning%20their%20nose%20up%20at%20this%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBy%20the%20way,%20almost%20all%20of%20the%20lovely%20props%20you%20can%20see%20in%20these%20photos%20come%20from%20HomeSense%20%E2%80%93%20the%20cute%20little%20plates%20and%20pastry%20forks,%20the%20little%20round%20custard%20jug,%20the%20rustic%20white%20tray,%20the%20blue%20cake%20tin,%20and%20the%20gorgeous%20ruby%20red%20tablecloth%20(aka%20my%20Christmas%20tablecloth%20forever%20more).%20I%E2%80%99ve%20actually%20not%20shopped%20at%20HomeSense%20much%20before,%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20not%20the%20first%20place%20that%20would%20come%20to%20my%20mind%20if%20I%20needed%20new%20crockery.%20But%20actually,%20I%20spent%20a%20very%20happy%20hour%20browsing%20there%20the%20other%20day%20(yes,%20I%20do%20mean%20a%20full%20hour).%20I%20never%20realised%20how%20much%20cool%20stuff%20they%20do!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKitchen%20equipment%20is%20just%20the%20beginning%20%E2%80%93%20they%20also%20sell%20really%20unique%20furniture%20(and%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20mean%20%E2%80%98unique%E2%80%99%20as%20in%20ugly,%20I%20mean%20really%20cool%20stuff%20that%20you%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20find%20elsewhere),%20quirky%20artwork,%20unusual%20food%20products%20and,%20at%20the%20moment,%20the%20most%20amazing%20Christmas%20decorations%20(is%20it%20time%20for%20the%20C-word%20yet?).%20They%20also%20have%20some%20gorgeous%20ornaments,%20which%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20wait%20to%20get%20my%20mitts%20on%20as%20soon%20as%20my%20house%20stops%20looking%20like%20a%20building%20site%20(we%E2%80%99ve%20got%20some%20work%20going%20on%E2%80%A6%20pretty%20much%20all%20the%20time%E2%80%A6).%20I%E2%80%99m%20so%20going%20to%20be%20one%20of%20those%20ladies%20with%20kitsch%20ornaments%20everywhere%20%E2%80%93%20and%20I%20mean%20kitsch%20in%20the%20best%20possible%20way!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20prices%20at%20Homesense%20are%20really%20reasonable%20too,%20actually.%20They%20do%20have%20some%20more%20high-end%20items,%20but%20most%20of%20their%20products%20are%20very%20affordable.%20They%E2%80%99re%20part%20of%20the%20TK%20Maxx%20family,%20if%20that%20gives%20you%20more%20of%20an%20idea.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20other%20words:%20new%20favourite%20shop,%20fo%E2%80%99%20sho%E2%80%99.%20Make%20sure%20you%E2%80%99re%20following%20me%20on%20Instagram,%20because%20I%E2%80%99m%20sure%20when%20I%20pick%20up%20some%20more%20cool%20bits%20I%E2%80%99ll%20share%20them%20over%20there!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20like%20my%20recipes,%20don%E2%80%99t%20forget%20to%20follow%20me%20on%20social%20media!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFacebook%20(for%20recipe%20updates%20and%20occasional%20chatter)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInstagram%20(for%20everyday%20life%20stuff)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPinterest%20(for%20things%20that%20make%20me%20hungry)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETwitter%20(for%20all%20the%20other%20nonsense)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESuper%20easy%20caramel%20pear%20crumble%20cake%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Author:%20Becca%20@%20Amuse%20Your%20Bouche%20Recipe%20type:%20Dessert%20Yield:%20Serves%208%20%20%20Ingredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2%20pears,%20sliced%20%C2%BD%20tsp%20ground%20cinnamon%20%C2%BD%20tsp%20ground%20nutmeg%20100g%20unsalted%20butter,%20diced%20(~1%20cup%20diced)%20(plus%20more%20for%20g
